The Resurrection Christ
The authoritative evidence for a resurrection is to SEE
the risen one. That is why Paul in 1 Cor 15 lists people
who SAW the risen Lord Jesus Christ.
The burial (Matt 27:55-61, Mark 15:40-47, Luke 23:50-
56, John 19:38-42) Jesus Christ died around 3PM, on
Friday, the 14th day of Abib, AD33. At sunset, the annual
Passover feast was to commence, so a disciple of Jesus
by the name Joseph, a rich man of Arimathaea, an
honourable counsellor who had not consented to the
crucifixion, went up to Pilate, and begged him
permission to bury the body of Jesus. Pilate, having
ascertained that Jesus was indeed dead, commanded
the body to be delivered to Joseph. Another disciple, a
Pharisee, and ruler of the Jews named Nicodemus also
joined with a 100 pound mixture of myrrh and aloes.
They took down the body of Jesus from the cross and
wrapped it in clean linen sheets with the spices. Right
beside the crucifixion site was a garden, and in it Joseph
had an unused sepulchre, newly hewn in the rock. With
hardly any time left before the start of the feast, they
quickly laid the body in that sepulchre and covered the
door with a huge stone.
5

The women from Galilee, who followed Jesus and
ministered to him, observed all this and also followed
them to the sepulchre and saw where and how his body
was laid. They were not satisfied with the hasty burial,
so they decided to again properly anoint the body with
prepared spices. The earliest they could do it was after
the Sabbath, so they returned and prepared the spices
and ointments, and waited for the Sabbath to pass.
The seal on the sepulchre (Matt 27:62-66) In the high
drama of the arrest, trial, and crucifixion of Jesus, the
Jewish rulers had overlooked a vital matter. While he
was yet alive, Jesus Christ had claimed that he would
rise from death on the third day. Only on the morning
after the burial did they remember this. The body of
Jesus was by now in the tomb for over 12 hours, but it
was better late than never. They came up to Pilate and
requested the sepulchre be made secure until the close
of the third day. This was to pre-empt anybody from
stealing the body and then propagating resurrection
rumours making matters worse. Pilate grants their
request so they seal the stone and set a watch of
keepers. Matthew is the only gospel account which
records this.

The ressurection Acts 13:30, Matt 28:2-4 On the day
after the Sabbath, the first day of the week (Sunday),
God raised Jesus Christ from death. Ressurection is the
miraculous restoration of His physical life, the re-union
of His spirit with His body. The angel of the Lord
descended from heaven, rolled back the stone from the
door of the sepulchre and sat upon it. His countenance
was so bright and fearful that the keepers trembled and
fell as dead men.
A physical death is a seperation of the spirit from the
body (James 2:26). Ressurction is the re-union of spirit
and body (1 Kings 17:21-22; Luke 8:55). There are two
Ressurections.
First ressurection: is also called ressurection of life
(John 29;Rev 20:4-6;Acts 24:15). It is a ressurection
from among the dead (Mathew 17:9;Phil 3:11;Col
1:18). Christ is the first fruits(1 Cor 15:23;Mathew 28:1-
8). Secondly they that are Christs at his coming (1 Cor
15:23;1 Thess 4:15-18;Heb 11:40) thirdly those who turn
to God during the tribulation period and are martyred
(Rev 6:9-11; 11:7-9;15:2-4) are raised at the dn of the
great tribulation (Rev 11:11-12;14:13)
7

Glorified body: The body in which thedisciples saw the
risen lord was real, that in which they had seen him
living, and that in which had died (Luke 24:39; John
20:24-29). And yet, as is manifested from the gospel
accounts of His appearances during the forty days and of
His visible ascension, His body was undergoing the
mysterious change of that glorificationof which the
glorification was the beginning and ascension into
heaven the end (John 20:4,14,26,21:4;Luke 24:37).
Christ now dwells in heaven in a glorified body (Phil
3:21; Colossians 3:4;1 Peter 1:21;2 Cor 3:18)
Departed saints: Departed saints are With christ (Phil
1:23) and they are in the presense of Glory. But their
bodies are not yet glorified.Their bodies will raised,
changed (1 Cor 15:51-52; Phul 3:21; Job 14:14) and
glorified in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the
last trump (1 Cor 15:52).
Glorified bodies: Ressurection is the deliverance from
the effect and concequences of sin (Romans 8:11,
23,Eph 4:30). The bodies of the living saints will Put on
immortality and the bodies of the saints who have died
will put on incorruption (1 Corinthians 15:53-54). It is
clothed upon with our house which is from heaven (2
8

Corinthians 5:2). We will be both morally like christ (1
John 3:2) and physically like christ (Phil 3:21). If we
have been planted together in the likeness of His
death,we shall also in the likeness of his Ressurection
(Romans 6:5).It is not that we got new bodies. Our
bodies got glorified.
Second ressurction:The wicked will be raisesed together
to stand before the white throne of God and receive
their eternal judgement, will be case into the lake of fire.
Summary: the teachings of bible concering Ressurection
can be summarized as follows.
1) The body shall rise again.
2) The identity of the body will be preserved
3) The body of saints will be glorified
4) The resuurction of righteouss takes places at the
coming of Christ (1 Thess 4:13-18;1 Cor 15:53)
5) The Ressurection of unsaved at the white throne
judgement (Rev 20:11-15)
6) The power is of God in Christ, who said I am the
Ressurection and life (John 11:25).

Appearances of Jesus Christ
The women at the sepulchre (Mark 16:1-4, Luke 24: 1-2,
Matt 28:1, John 20:1-2) Very early on that morning,
before day break, Mary Magdalene, Mary (mother of
James), Salome (wife of Zebedee), and certain other
women came to the sepulchre with their prepared
spices to anoint the body. They had not yet resolved
how to roll away the great stone to enter the sepulchre.
But upon arrival, they found the stone was already
rolled away. We must realize that the angel had rolled
back the stone, not for Jesus to come out, but for these
women to go in. Jesus was already raised and gone out
of the tomb.
As soon as they saw an opened sepulchre, Mary
Magdalene immediately left the other women and fled
to the apostles. Johns gospel is specifically a record of
Mary Magdalene. Note carefully her message to Peter:
they have taken away the body and we know not
where Obviously, she had not entered the tomb, nor
had she seen or heard the angels message.
The women enter the sepulchre (Luke 24:3-8, Mark
16:5-7, Matt 28:5-7, Mark 16:8) The remaining women
10

entered the tomb. They saw two men inside with long
white shining garments (angels), and one of them
explained to the women that Jesus had risen from the
dead just as he had said he would. He instructed them
to inform the apostles. But they were terrified and fled
the sepulchre and shut themselves up not telling
anything to anyone.
Peter and John at the sepulchre (John 20:3-10) upon
hearing the news from Mary Magdalene that the body
of Jesus was taken away, Peter and John ran to the
sepulchre. Inside the sepulchre, they carefully observed
the linen sheets and the head napkin lying in their
respective places in their wrapped condition. From what
he saw, Peter was perplexed, but John believed that
Jesus had risen, but they neither saw nor heard any
angel. By now, Mary Magdalene had followed Peter and
John and also reached the sepulchre.
The first appearance to Mary magdelene (John 20:11-
18, Mark 16:9-11) While Peter and John departed, Mary
remained there weeping and looking into the open
empty sepulchre. She then saw two angels inside the
sepulchre who enquired after her sorrow and tears.
While she was replying them that somebody had taken
11

away the Lords body, she sensed somebody behind her,
and when she turned around it was the risen Lord Jesus,
but she did not recognize him. Now Jesus enquired after
her tears, and she, supposing that he was the gardener
asked whether he had taken away the body from the
sepulchre. At this point, Jesus called her by name,
Mary, and she immediately realized that it was her
Master, risen from the dead. Jesus then said to her,
Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father:
but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto
my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your
God.
So now for the second time that day, Mary goes to the
apostles, but this time, instead of an incomplete tragic
news of they have taken away the body and we know
not where, she comes with joyful breaking news that
she saw the risen Lord, and she also conveyed the Lords
message to the apostles. They did not believe Mary.
Perhaps John, who had believed earlier at the tomb, was
not back yet.
Getting no response from the apostles, she went to
share her spectacular experience to the other women
who had been with her early that morning. She found
12

them shut up out of fear. When they heard about Mary
Magdalenes encounter with the risen Jesus, which was
corroborative to their own encounter with the angel and
his message, they took courage and accompanied her
back to the disciples.
The second appearance: the women (Matt 28:9-10;
Luke 24:10-12) as the women, encouraged by Marys
witness, went to tell the apostles their testimony, the
Lord Jesus appeared to them with a cheerful greeting.
The women bowed to him, held him by the feet, and
worshipped him. Then said Jesus unto them, Be not
afraid: go tell my brethren that they go into Galilee, and
there shall they see me.
At his first appearance, Jesus cautioned Mary, Touch
me not for I am not yet ascended to my Father. In this
second appearance, he allowed them to hold his feet in
worship. It can be therefore concluded that between the
first and second meeting, Jesus did ascend to the Father
and come back. It agrees with John 16:16 A little while,
and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye
shall see me, because I go to the Father. Why? Heb 9:12.
Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own
blood had he entered in once into the holy place, having
13

obtained eternal redemption for us. This is in contrast to
his final ascension about which he said in John 16:10 I go
to my Father, and ye see me no more.
The women who finally come to the apostles with their
individual testimonies are Mary Magdalene, Mary (the
mother of James), Joanna (wife of Chuza), Salome (wife
of Zebedee), and the other women who were with
them. All the women have now seen the risen Lord, but
none of the apostles have. This is the third time Mary
Magdalene comes to the apostles, and the first time she
is accompanied by the other women. The apostles did
not believe their report. (John must not have returned
yet).
The third appearance: Cleopas and partner (Mark
16:12-13, Luke 24:13-35) That same day, Cleopas and
another disciple left Jerusalem in the afternoon by foot
to a village called Emmaus, 12 km away. On their 3-hour
trek, they talked and reasoned of Jesus of Nazareth, his
stature as a prophet mighty in deed and word before
God and all the people, their hope that he would
redeem Israel, his untimely crucifixion, and the
astonishing testimony of certain women that morning of
a vision of angels that Jesus had risen from the dead.
14

Then Jesus, in another form that hid his true identity,
joined with them on their journey and in their sad
conversation. He chided them of their ignorance and
unbelief of the scriptures in which the prophets had
spoken how the Christ ought to have suffered death and
entered into glory. Then, beginning with the books of
Moses and through all the prophets, he expounded unto
them the things concerning himself. On hearing and
understanding the scriptures that were fulfilled before
their eyes, their hearts burned within them with
excitement.
When they reached Emmaus, Jesus made as though he
would have gone further, but they constrained him to
spend the night with them. Then at supper, at the
breaking of bread they realized that it was Jesus Christ
himself, perhaps the marks of the cross was a give-away,
or perhaps the manner in which he broke bread, to
which they were accustomed to.
If Cleopas is the same as Alphaeus, then he is the father
to James (the less) and Judas, both of who were apostles
of Christ. It is also very likely that this Cleopas was a
brother of Joseph, which made his wife Mary, and the
mother of Jesus to be co-sisters (John 19:25). It is
15

possible that Cleopas partner that evening was his wife
Mary.
The fourth appearance: Peter (Luke 24:35) Having
realized that it was the risen Lord that met with them,
Cleopas and his partner immediately returned to
Jerusalem. There they met with the eleven, who were
gathered together and listening to Peters witness, that
the risen Lord had appeared to him too. At this juncture,
Thomas should have left the place for some reason.
The fifth appearance: The apostles 1
st
(Luke 24: 36-45,
Mark 16:14, John 20:19-25) At that point, Jesus himself
stood in the midst of them, pronouncing peace. Behold
my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and
see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me
have. And while they yet believed not for joy, and
wondered, he asked for some food. They gave him a
piece of a broiled fish, and of an honeycomb, and he ate
before them.
Luke says Jesus opened their understanding and John
says Jesus breathed on them the Holy Spirit. These both
are speaking of the same event and mean the same
thing. Luke tells us the what (imparting of
16

understanding), John tells us the how (by breathing
upon them the Holy Ghost). Prov 1:23 behold, I will pour
out my spirit unto you, I will make known my words
unto you. The apostles now understood the scriptures,
the necessity and purpose of the sufferings and death of
Christ.
Thomas (Didymus) was not with them when Jesus came.
Even when he was informed by the others he did not
believe saying Except I shall see in his hands the print of
the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails,
and thrust my hand into his side, I will not believe.
The resurrected body of Jesus Christ had flesh and
bones; there is no mention of blood. Thats interesting
because in a human being, life is in the blood. Perhaps in
the resurrection to immortality, there is an
improvement in our constitution. The resurrected body
of Jesus also bore the crucifixion marks. We must realize
that this was not the glorified body; just the resurrected
body. I believe that after his ascension Jesus Christ was
glorified, and since then those marks are no longer
there; as witnessed by Stephen, Saul, and John.
17

The sixth appearance: The apostles 2
nd
for thomass
sake: (John 20: 26-29) Eight days later, they were still in
Jerusalem, and still within closed doors. Jesus came and
stood in their midst, and proves himself to Thomas.
Jesus makes a significant statement: Thomas, because
thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they
that have not seen, and yet have believed.
The seventh appearance: the apostles 3
rd
for Peters
sake (John 21) Then the apostles departed from
Jerusalem and travelled 150km north to Galilee. They
did that because Jesus Christ had explicitly made this
appointment before his death saying that after he was
raised he would meet them in Galilee (Matt 26:32). Also
the angels reminded them of this appointment (Matt
28:7), and the Lord himself reminded them (Matt 28:10).
When the apostles reached Galilee, Peter decided to go
fishing and six other apostles joined him. The Lord met
with them, restored Peters offence and impressed on
them that they were being called to a greater
commission than to go back fishing.
The eighth appearance: The apostles 4
th
Galilee
conference and comission: (Matt 28:16-20)
18

Having impressed on them to give up fishing and follow
him, they met up in a mountain in Galilee where they
were appointed to meet and there Jesus Christ explaind
to them the manner in which God will restore the
kingdom to Israel, and what they, as his apostles were to
do when the kingdom of God was come. Only Matthew
records the Galilee conference, because only his gospel
account is covering the kingdom of God. The
commission recorded here would take effect after the
kingdom was restored to Israel. Then the apostles were
to go into the nations and spread Gods kingdom by
teaching and baptizing the nations. The book of Acts is a
record that in the 30 years that followed, Israel did not
repent as a nation and God withdrew his kingdom to
them. Under the circumstances, this Matt 28
commission was never evoked. The 12 apostles never
went to the nations. In future, at the close of the current
dispensation, God will again take up the kingdom to
Israel and then the men to whom this commission was
given will sit on 12 thrones judging the 12 tribes of
Israel, and they will fulfil this commission to the nations
to the letter.
The nighth appearance: the more than 500 (1 Cor 15:3-
6) we are not told when this incident took place. Paul
19

uses the phrase the twelve by which he excludes him
from that group because he is an apostle chosen and
commissioned to the Gentiles. So Matthias was the 12th
apostle to Israel, and though he was chosen later, at this
point, he too was present in Galilee with the apostles
when Christ met with them. That lends support to the
thought that perhaps it was during this Galilee
conference that these 500 odd saints were present. The
testimony of these 500 eye-witnesses was a strong
corroborative confirmation that the testimonies of the
apostles were true.
The tenth appearance: James (1 Cor 15:7) There are
three James in the New Testament records (i) James the
apostle, son of Zebedee, also known as James the great;
(ii) James the apostle, son of Alphaeus, also known as
James the less; and (iii) James the brother of the Lord,
son of Joseph & Mary, also known as James the just.
When Paul visited Jerusalem three years after his
conversion he met only with James the brother of the
Lord, other than Peter. (Gal 1:19). Its interesting that at
this point, James son of Zebedee - the apostle - is yet
alive. In Acts 12:1, James the son of Zebedee is killed by
Herod, and Peter was put in prison. However, an angel
20

sets Peter free, who then went to the house of Mark,
and declared unto them how the Lord had brought him
out of the prison. And he said, Go shew these things
unto James, and to the brethren. Peter picked out
James the brother of the Lord by name. In Acts 15, again
its James the brother of the Lord who has the final word
in the council meeting. In Acts 21, again its James the
brother of the Lord who has the leading role in
Jerusalem, over all the other apostles. He is also the
author of the epistle to the 12 tribes of Israel. Peter,
being the first among the 12 apostles, held only James,
the brother of the Lord in reverential fear Gal 2:12.
Subsequently, with the apostles spreading out to reach
Israel in diaspora, James the brother of the Lord takes
charge of the church in Jerusalem. I believe therefore
that it is to this James, the Lords brother that the risen
Christ made a special appearance after his resurrection.
