Pressure relief valve:

Pressure relief valve can be used to perform several tasks in the hydraulic
systems. In addition to its main function of protecting the hydraulic system
from the excessive pressure, it can be used as a safety valve (module 4),
sequence valve and brake valve.

1.1

Sequence valve

The function of the sequence

valve

is

somewhat

very similar

to the

function of the pressure relief valve except that, after the set pressure
has been reached, the sequence valve diverts the fluid to a second
actuator to

do

work

in another part of the hydraulic system in a

sequential order. The animation in the link below illustrates the function of
the sequence valve.

1.2

Brake valve

This valve is used to prevent pressure peaks, which may arise as a result of
mass moments of inertia on sudden closing of the directional control valve.
Application example is shown below in fig 6.1.

Practical Task I

2.1

Bulkhead Door

A double acting cylinder is used to open and close a bulkhead door as shown in
(figure 6.2). Closing must be carried out smoothly and at a constant adjustable
speed. The speed is adjusted by means of a one-way flow control valve. A
pressure relief valve must be fitted to provide counter-holding and prevent the
heavy door from pulling the piston rod out of the cylinder during the closing
operation.

2.2

Procedure of solution:

1. Draw the hydraulic circuit diagram for the task.

2. Determine the necessary components
3. Simulate the hydraulic circuit using FluidSim software.
4. Assemble the circuit practically and check its operation.
5. Measuring the cylinder advance stroke time with and without a load and
with and without counter-holding
6. Compare and write down your observations.
