ASDA could not have picked a more welcoming
and friendly location for this years Annual Session. Even
though we barely saw the sun and Southern California got
rain for the first time in almost six months, the warmth of Anaheim was
heavenly for those of us escaping the brutal Midwestern winter.
One of the main orders of business taken care of at Annual Session is the election of the new
National ASDA President, Vice-Presidents, and Speaker of the House, as well as each of the new
District Trustees. Im confident in saying that, in all of these categories this year, the candidates were
outstanding and the competition extremely close. In the end, we elected Kris Mendoza (UCLA 15) as
the new President, and Jason Watts (Nova 15) and Daryn Lu (Oklahoma 15) as the new Vice
Presidents. Closer to home, District 8s Trustee election displayed two of the most well prepared,
experienced, and passionate ASDA leaders I have ever seen. Although Lauren Reed (Creighton 16)
was eventually elected over Stephanie Zastrow ( MN 15), either of these
ladies would

Welcome! From District 8 Trustee, Lauren Reed
Greetings! And welcome to a brand new edition of the Articul8or. Let me first take a second to thank
each and every one of you for your support in the Trustee election this past Annual Session in Anaheim, CA. I
am humbled to be selected as the voice of this outstanding district, and I look forward to meeting and working
with each of you.
Your newly elected District 8 cabinet is already running full steam ahead. This years goals include
increased outreach and legislative participation at the local and state levels, new district-wide social programs,
and of course, to put on an inspiring district meeting this fall. Throughout our planning, we hope to use the
vast skills and resources of the students in our district to make this the best year ever.
I would like to extend a warm welcome to the newest dental school in our district, Missouri School of
Dentistry and Oral Health at ATSU. We are excited for you to
join the District 8 family and we look forward to meeting each of
you at ASDA events to come.
On a somewhat somber note, let us all keep the family of Jiwon Lee, Immediate Past President of
ASDA, in our hearts and prayers. In many ways, we have all experienced a loss, as Jiwon was a vibrant leader, a
pillar of the ASDA foundation over the past three years. Let us be grateful for her time here and cherish the
memories we will have forever.
Whether you are just starting in the clinic or in a new position in your chapter, know that you have a
team of support that wants you to succeed. This year, let us strive to be the best us we can be - the best
students, chapter members, District 8 family.
Be sure to like ASDA District 8 on Facebook to keep up with the activity throughout the district.
Heres to a great year!
Lauren Reed, District 8 Trustee (Creighton 16)

National Dental Student Lobby Day 2014
Lobby day 2014 was a huge success! The rain couldn't stop over 300 dental students from hitting the hill on your behalf. This year's
lobbied bills were:
S. 466/H.R. 963 Coordination of Pro Bono Medically Recommended Dental Care Act: Grant program supporting national dental
care programs for low income individuals.
H.R. 1527: Student Loan Interest Deduction Act of 2013: Increases the deduction allowed for student loan interest from $2,500
to $5,000 for individuals and $10,000 for a joint return, regardless of income.
S. 1066 Federal Student Loan Refinancing Act: Dental school graduates can consolidate or refinance their Direct Unsubsidized
Stafford Loans (and/or Federal Direct Consolidation Loans) at a fixed rate of 4.0 percent and this retroactively applies to all
such loans taken out between July 1, 2006, and the date of the bills passage.
ASDAs efforts to aid of those in need of dental care were well received. S. 466/H.R. 963 is a bill that is well sponsored on both sides of
the aisle. Dental decay pledges allegiance to no political party. Senators and Representatives are well aware of the need for dental
health care and were very supportive of this bill. The other two bills, HR 1527 and S
1066, were given necessary support. Most representatives were not aware of the
financial obligations of completing dental school, much less so the financial
obligations of running a practice while balancing loan repayment. When speaking
with the staff representative for Rep. Yoder (R-KS), we found he was unaware that
Dentists incur the highest amount of educational debt of all professional programs
and was shocked at the numbers. Our presence during Lobby Day brought light to
these issues and gave additional emphasis to the importance of these bills.

Simple Tips for your
First Clinic Experiences
Be confident: Youve worked hard to get to this
point. Put all that basic science stuff aside and
focus on why you chose to come to dental school. You
deserve the chance to start treating patients.
1.
Lean on your classmates: Your classmates
experiences, knowledge, and different perspective
may be just what you need in order for your
appointments to go a little bit smoother and for you to
improve your skills faster.

Expect to be frustrated at times: Your patient may
cancel minutes before the appointment;
instruments and materials may just not work for you
that day. Your faculty may seemingly vanish and you
have to wait forever just to get a check. It all comes
with the learning process.

Remind yourself that your patient is alive: We all
get caught up in doing the best work we can, but
dont forget to communicate with your patient.
Establish a good rapport and make sure the patient
is having a good appointment. This will make the
patient want to come back to the school, and
hopefully youll be the one treating them
Critique yourself: Take time after the
appointment is over to think about how the
appointment went. Where could have it gone better,
were you surprised at how well certain steps went for
you? Are you an effective communicator and need to
improve your hand skills, or are you the complete
opposite? Questions like these will make sure you are
staying on track towards become an effective
clinician through the entirety of the appointment.

have represented us exceptionally well on
the Board of Trustees. Not only that,
either would have been a force to be
reckoned with in the National election. We
are lucky to have such involved members in our
District and the future of The Ocho is bright.
Another much anticipated part of Annual
Session is the Gold Crown Awards. This year, as
always, District 8 brought home some coveted
hardware. Minnesota won the Chapter
Achievement Award for Involvement in Organized
Dentistry and Stephanie Zastrow (MN 15) was
selected as District 8 Delegate of the year. Congrats
everyone!
Of course, District 8 had plenty of fun in
Anaheim as well. We enjoyed a beautiful dinner
with Districts 9 and 10 on night 2 and got our fill of
dancing at the Presidents Gala Dinner/Dance
themed Were on a boat. A good chunk of time
was also spent soaking up the bliss of the
Disneyland hot tubs- although Im pretty sure we
were the only District to be seen in their swimsuits
that weekend. Some people just dont know a good
thing when they see it.
Overall, our time in Anaheim reinforced my
belief that, not only is Annual Session the most fun
ASDA trip of the year, but also that District 8 is the
best district by far. It has been a blast getting to
know all of you and I already cant wait for next
year!

Remembering Jiwon Lee
On April 1, 2014, Immediate Past President of National ASDA, Jiwon Lee, went missing. She was not
seen again until May 4, when her body was recovered from the Hudson River. Jiwon was an
inspiration to all of us involved in ASDA and will be dearly missed.
In all of her ASDA roles, Jiwon showed passion, knowledge, and a fire to get the job done well. She
served as a mentor for me and helped me make valuable connections to better determine by
direction within organized dentistry. Her love of organized dentistry and the community we have in
ASDA have always been evident. My thoughts are with her and her family through this difficult
time. Stephanie Zastrow, MN ASDA Past President (MN 15)
