Assignment 1

Due: 5pm Thursday 20
th
March 2014 (use the Level 2 submission boxes)

Each problem must be started on a new page and must be neatly set out and clearly explained.

Marks may be deducted for work that is poorly presented.

Any problems that require a derivation or equation formulation will include marks for how
clearly youve set out and explained your derivations.

This is an individual assignment (i.e., no collaboration). By submitting your assignment you
are agreeing to the following: I declare that all material in this assessment is my own work
except where there is clear acknowledgement and reference to the work of others. I have read
the University Policy Statement on Plagiarism, Collusion and Related Forms of Cheating. I
give permission for my assessment work to be reproduced and submitted to other academic
staff for the purposes of assessment and to be copied, submitted and retained in a form suitable
for electronic checking of plagiarism.

Any requests for extensions must be submitted in writing at least 48 hours prior to the due
date: these requests must be supported by the appropriate documentation.

Late assignments will be penalized at 20% per day late.

1. Simple Ideal Gas Concepts [24 marks]
a) How many moles of gaseous O2 are needed to fill a 5L tank to a pressure of 50 atm at a
temperature of 300 K?
b) What is the mass in kg of the required amount of O2 in part (a)?
c) Determine the mass in kg of one molecule of O2.
2. Specific heats [20 marks]
a) Consider the following molecular species: CO
2
, H, O
2
, H
2
O, N
2
and C
8
H
18
. Sort these in
order from smallest to largest C
p
, and for each species give all the reasons why you
decided it has a larger C
p
than the one preceding it.
b) Explain briefly but clearly why C
p
is always greater than C
v
, with he consequence that the
specific heat ratio ! !
!
!
!
!
is always greater than one.
3. Ideal vs. perfect vs. real gases [20 marks]
a) Explain briefly but clearly what the difference is between an ideal gas and a perfect
gas.
b) Explain briefly but clearly what the difference is between a perfect gas and a real gas.
4. Mixtures of Gases [36 marks]
a) Consider a mixture of gases consisting of 2g of O
2
, 3g of N
2
, 1g of CO
2
, 3g of H
2
O, and
6g of CH
4
.
b) Determine the mass fraction of each species in the mixture.
c) Determine the mole fraction of each species in the mixture.
d) Use the attached table to determine the molar specific heat !
!
of this mixture in J/mol-K
at a temperature of 300K, and then convert this to the mass specific heat C
p
in J/kg-K?
e) What are the molar specific heat !
!
and the mass specific heat cp of the mixture at
1000K?
