Dogs make wonderful companions, but need to be

treated with care and respect. Be aware that any dog can
bite if provoked. No matter how friendly or cute, or the
size or breed of the dog.

Each year more than 4.7 million people are bitten by
dogs, according to the American Veterinary Medical
Association (AVMA). Children are the most common
victims, followed by senior citizens and service people
(mail carriers, meter readers, etc.).

A majority of reported dog bites to children were from a
dog the child knew, such as the family dog, or that of a
relative, friend or neighbor.

Education for parents and children is essential and is one of the best preventions to avoid a dog bite.
Parents and dog guardians need to be responsible for their dogs at all times, especially around
children.

Learning to read dog body language and dog warning signs is extremely important .Some dogs send
obvious warning signals like showing their teeth, growling and barking, while other dogs display
more subtle signs. The more subtle signs may include body stiffness, lip licking, sniffing the
ground, panting when its not hot, or yawning when the dog is not tired.

For Dog Owners:
SOCIALIZE and expose your young puppy to
people and controlled circumstances, so your
pup feels at ease around strangers and other
animals. Continue that exposure as your pup
matures to an adult dog.
TEACH your dog basic cues like sit, stay, leave-
it and come. Make these exercises fun.
NEVER put your dog in a situation where it
feels threatened or teased.
