The Lenape High School Chamber Choir performs the Star Spangled Banner at the beginning of the Lenape Regional High School Districts
fifth annual Armed Services Awards Ceremony last week.
District students prepare for military
By MIKE MONOSTRA
The Sun
Being in the presence of mili-
tary veterans was nothing new
for Seneca High School senior
Chandler Dwyer.
Continuing in the footsteps of
other family members, Dwyer
will be heading to the Navy after
graduating in June. He was able
to see through those around him
the importance of serving in the
military.
However, for some of the other
27 students in the Lenape Region-
al High School District who will
be heading to a branch of mili-
tary at the end of the school year,
they are heading into uncharted
territory, with little idea of what
to expect.
After being honored at the dis-
tricts fifth annual Armed Servic-
es Awards Ceremony, they were
introduced to a new community,
one of which only a handful of
select alumni can say they are a
part.
At the ceremony, members of
the school and local community
gave thanks to students prepar-
ing to enter the military and com-
munity members who have or are
currently serving.
However, there was another
connection being made through-

Students thanked by community
out the evening, a connection
only members of the military
could make.
The ceremonys keynote
speaker was Dennis Devery, a Mt.
Laurel native who spent 30 years
in the military, and is the vice
president for institutional plan-
ning and research at Thomas
Edison State College.
Devery gave the graduating
seniors an honest talk about the
military, saying while many peo-
ple wholeheartedly support vet-
erans, others simply dont care.
This is where bonding with veter-
ans becomes so important.
They are the shoulders on
which you will build your lega-
cy, Devery said.
While there are many advan-
tages coming with military serv-
ice, Devery explained there will
be many sacrifices and tribula-
tions with it as well.
Seneca High School senior Jay-
den Fries is prepared to make
those sacrifices. Fries, who will
be going into the Air Force, said
he finds it easy to connect with
those who have already served.
You see a veteran, and they
sacrificed, and we are about to
sacrifice ourselves, he said.
You make that connection im-
mediately.
Dwyer said the appreciation
for veterans couldnt be under-
stated.
Without them, there wouldnt
be us here, he said. We really
appreciate that.
The school districts goal in
holding the ceremony isnt just to
honor military personnel, but to
create a Lenape community
where military alumni can re-
turn home and talk about those
entering the military.
Superintendent Carol Birn-
bohm told the seniors how cru-
cial it was to support their fellow
veterans.
Hopefully this ceremony lets
you know the importance of
their service in your country,
she said.
Chris Heilig, the director of
programs and planning for the
district, said the district knows
the importance of serving the
military. The creation of a com-
munity of military personnel
within Lenapes alumni
has helped to keep the awards
ceremony going strong for five
years.
A number of veterans, old and
young, received awards at the
ceremony. For students such as
Dwyer and Fries, those veterans
have served as role models for
them.
Soon, Dwyer and Fries will be-
come role models for Lenape stu-
dents of the future.

Mayor endorses Steve Lonegan
for Congress in primary
I am writing this letter as an endorse-
ment for Steve Lonegan for U.S. Congress
in the upcoming Republican Primary.
Over the years, Lonegan has been a con-
sistent voice for common sense in Wash-
ington. He has been clear and has never
wavered in his belief in limited govern-
ment and fiscal sanity. More importantly,
Lonegan has a plan for how he will be an ef-
fective congressman.
Recently, I attended an event where
Lonegan fielded a wide range of questions
from a diverse group of people. His an-
swers proved that not only did he under-
stand our nations history, but he had a
firm grasp on the current (broken) struc-
ture of Washington, and he understood
how one congressman can have a serious
positive impact. The other candidates may
be intelligent people who have conserva-
tive ideals, but are they prepared? Do they
really understand what it will take to make
a difference in Washington, and do they
have the will to follow their convictions,
even when the opposition is strong?
So far, I have only heard one candidate,
Lonegan, articulate an actual
plan. The rest have just offered platitudes.
Thats why Lonegan has my
support.
Before you vote in the June 3 primary,
please take the time to decide who is best
prepared to represent us in Washington. I
believe that man is Steve Lonegan, and I
hope you will join me in electing him to
Congress.

C
ell phones are one of the great-
est inventions of the last 30
years. Coupled with other tech-
nological advances such as wireless
internet and the creation of social
media, cell phones have given us the
ability to connect to the world in the
palm of our hand no matter where we
go.
In misguided or uneducated hands,
though, cell phones can be dangerous.
Criminals use cell phones to plan and
execute crimes. They can be used to
perpetuate hate. They can be used at
the wrong time, such as behind the
wheel, and be the cause of life-threat-
ening circumstances to others.
And in schools, in the hands of kids
who dont fully grasp the effects of
their actions, they can be objects that
promote cruelty and lewdness, and
can seriously damage a childs future.
A middle school in Basking Ridge in
Somerset County is dealing with this
situation right now. Last week, admin-
istrators said they found nude photos
of students on several cell phones. The
districts superintendent sent a letter
about the incident to parents, inform-
ing them of a deadline for children to
delete the images, otherwise theyd
face disciplinary action through the
school and possibly criminal charges
from the county prosecutors office.
Because the nude pictures were of
middle school students, under the age
of 16, it would be classified as child
pornography.
Monitoring a childs cell phone
usage which includes their calls,
texts, video chats, web browsing and
social media usage is ultimately the
parents job, much like monitoring
what they watch on TV or look at on
the computer at home.
But it may be time for schools to
step up, too, and take a proactive ap-
proach with education. Schools al-
ready take on tough subjects with
young students, such as educating
them about stranger danger and sex
education.
Today, this education should expand
to include the potential dangers of tex-
ting, sharing and social media usage.
Cell phones are great. Texting is
great. Facebook is great. Twitter is
great. And so is everything else you
can do on a phone.
But if its not done properly, with
the right education and guidance, it
can go tragically wrong with the tap of
a touchscreen.
Those phones can be dangerous
Schools should take proactive approach to cell phone, social media education
Your thoughts
Should schools play a larger role in edu-
cating students about the dangers of cell
phones? Share your thoughts on this, and
other topics, in a letter to the editor.

Township plans to hold
annual fireworks show
By MIKE MONOSTRA
The Sun
For the third consecutive year,
Medford Township will be able to
hold its annual fireworks show
thanks to the Medford Celebrates
Foundation.
However, the foundation is hop-
ing there is more in its future
than putting on the Fourth of
July celebration.
Robert Egan, the president of
Medford Celebrates, said the or-
ganizations goal is to ultimately
help with other township events.
One of the objectives of this
foundation was to hopefully fund
other events in the town, but we
havent gotten there yet, he said.
Before adding other events to
the agenda, Medford Celebrates is
trying to become solvent in hold-
ing the fireworks each year.
Even though the organization
has received the money to contin-
ue the celebration in 2014, it only
goes so far as to cover the fire-
works, security, cleanup costs and
other expenses.
Egan said sponsorship has
been steady this year compared to
2013, but the number of private
donations and volunteers has de-
creased.
The number of folks who we
can count on to volunteer has di-
minished, he said. The dona-
tions outside of sponsorships
have also fallen off.
This year, the event is moving
back to July 3 after Medford Cele-
brates experimented with moving
it to the Saturday before July 4
last year. Entertainment was
added and the celebration began
at 3 p.m. instead of the usual 5
p.m. However, the extended event
and new date didnt take off.
People just didnt show up
until late, Egan said. It didnt
seem like we attracted a whole lot
of people between three and five.
So we just figured it didnt seem
to be that much of an attraction
to everybody.
This year, the fireworks are
being moved back to July 3. The
event will take place at Freedom
Park beginning at 5 p.m. There
will again be vendors and enter-
tainment, with the fireworks tak-
ing place around dusk.
Egan said a lot of people took
the fireworks and other events for
granted for a long time. When the
township stopped funding the
fireworks in 2011, many business-
es and residents stepped up to the
plate to make sure the fireworks
could stay.
Three years later, Egan be-
lieves some people are forgetting
how much fundraising is needed
to hold the event. He said many of
the visitors arent Medford resi-
dents.
Just talking to people two
years in a row, theres a lot of peo-
ple that come from out of town,
Egan said. It would be helpful if
they could helps us out a little.
One way the organization has
tried to get donations from out-of-
town visitors is through dona-
tions at the event. However, there
is a lot of uncertainty as to how
much money will be collected in
any given year.
Last year, we didnt collect as
much as we did before, Egan
said.
For 2014, the fireworks will
take place in Medford as usual.
Egan said local businesses both
old and new have been very re-
sponsive to Medford Celebrates
about donations. He just hopes
the residents continue to show
the same enthusiasm.

The investigation also led to the

Evening of the Arts
MIKE MONOSTRA/The Sun
Members of the Medford and Shawnee High School community turned out for Evening of the Arts at the
Shawnee gymnasium last week. Art projects from throughout the school year were on display for the
public to enjoy.
The Medford Arts Center will
present Dianne Sahms Guarnieri
and G. Emil Reutter as the fea-
tured poets on Wednesday, June 4,
at 7 p.m.
Widely published, both Sahms
Guarnieri and Reutter live and
work in Philadelphia. Editors of
The Fox Chase Review, an on-
line literary magazine, they also
host readings at The Ryerss Mu-
seum and have initiated The
Poets at Pennypack
In addition to Sahms
Guarnieri and Reutters presenta-
tion, Sharlene DeMartini will
conduct a free mini poetry work-
shop that will begin the evening
at 7 p.m. and an open mic will con-
clude the event. An award will be
given to the best open mic presen-
tation chosen by the audience.
Light refreshments will be
served. The MAC has been pre-
senting poets and open mics at
the center for seven years invit-
ing poets to come and listen as
well as present their own original
work. The event is free but dona-
tions are welcome.
For more information on the
poetry reading and other events
at the MAC, visit www.medfor-
