Maximum Sugar Recovery

Minimum Water/Wash Liquid Usage
Maximum Dry Solids
Filtration solutions for 2nd and 3rd
generation biofuels production
As the need for alternative transportation fuel sources
increases, the biofuel industry is moving from food to
non-food based biomass feed stocks, and is now facing
new challenges to develop environmentally friendly
processes which produce cost efficient commercially
viable fuel alternatives.
Whether the feed stock is wood chips, grass clippings,
corn stover, rice straw or some other bio-waste
material, each process has its own unique challenges.
One of the most critical steps of the biofuel production
process is the solid liquid separation as this can
have a huge influence on how competitive a particular
technology or process will be.
Outotec has worked closely with many of the Biofuel
industry leaders to help optimize their filtration needs.
With a broad product portfolio, testing and process
consultation capabilities Outotec has proven to be a
viable solid liquid separation partner to the Biofuel
Industry worldwide.

Fuel for the future
In 2008, Outotec (formerly Larox) supplied two gas
tight vacuum belt filters to a leading biorefining
research and demonstration plant in Finland. the
customer is a leading-edge company in the development
and delivery of environmentally sustainable biorefining
technologies and production solutions for industrial
utilization of non-wood and non-food feedstocks. More
recently, Outotec filtration solutions for Biofuels have
been installed in South East Asia, Central Europe and
North America.

Outotec participates in SugarTech, a cooperation
project between VTT Technical Research Centre of
Finland, University of Helsinki and several industrial
companies. In this project spruce, forest residue, birch
and sugar cane bagasse are being studied as a raw
material for production of sugars to be processed further
to ethanol and other chemicals.
Filtration Results
Outotecs Larox filtration solutions are backed up by
extensive test capabilities and a data base of test results.
Testing is an integral part of the Outotec solution
ensuring the optimum solution is found for your process.

Filter Type Description Features
Filter range for biofuels production
Outotec Larox Pressure Filters
(PF)
Maximum dry solids
Optimal cake washing due to
homogeneous cakes and the
flat filter plate configuration
Improved yield and consistent
quality
Fully automatic operation
Relatively small footprint
Outotec Larox Pressure Filters offer
the ability to dewater and wash fine
and difficult to dewater solids in high
volumes, producing very high purity,
dry filter cakes all in a fully automatic
mode.
The Outotec Larox PF utlilizes horizontal
filter plate design in combination with
inflatable diaphragms to maximize
filtration and washing efficiencies.
Outotec Larox Fast Opening Filter
Presses (FFP)
Large filtration area
High capacity /
production per unit
Flexible, automatic operation
Fast reliable pack opening
system
Good degree of dewatering
The latest development in membrane
filter presses, Outotec Larox FFP,
combines features of both a tower
press and a traditional membrane filter
press. It offers very high throughput
with good dewatering efficiency.
Outotec Larox RT & GT Maximum washing efficiency
Multistep co- and/or counter-
current washing on same unit
Compatible with corrosive or
solvent based processes
Fully enclosed/gas tight
options
Fully continuous and
automatic operation
High reliability and low
operating costs
Outotec Larox RT horizontal vacuum
belt filters offer multi-step processing
on a single unit. The steps can include
cake washing, enhanced dewatering,
mechanical compression or hot air
drying.
Outotec Larox RT filters are available
with a vapour hood, or GT (gas-
tight) filters which are fully enclosed,
operate under an inert atmosphere and
are suitable for solvent-wetted, toxic or
hazardous processes.
