1.0 INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background Of Study

According to Wikipedia (2014), drugs is a substance which may have medical, intoxicating,
performance enhancing or other effects when taken or put into a human body or the body of
anther animal and is not considered a food or exclusively a food. According to Wikipedia
(2014), illegal drugs are drugs which have control on them by a government and illegal in
certain.
According to uga-cdd.org (2006),the history of drugs start when the seeds for the concept
of rational drug design were laid in the 1940s and 1950s by George Hitchings and Gertrude
Elion in their work on DNA-based antimetabolites, which led to the discovery of modified
purines with anticancer activity. However, the era of DNA and medicine was largely stimulated
by the elucidation of the double-helical structure of DNA by Watson and Crick in 1953.
According to drugaware.com (2014), there are three main groups of drugs that effect the
brain. There are three categories are stimulants, depressant and hallucinogens. The stimulants
is the types of drugs that speed you up. The depressant is types of drugs that slow down and
the hallucinogens is the types of drugs can make you see and hear things that arent there or
make things look really strange.
According to NHS choices (2013),the effect of drugs can be divide into physical and health
effect. Its depending on the drug. It can enter the human body in a number of ways, including
injection, inhalation, and ingestion. The method of how it enters the body impacts on how the
drug affects the person. Some of the physical effects of drugs might sound nice, they do not
last long. Many people get depressed and lonely afterwards and start feeling sick. Also, it is
common symptoms to people who use drugs to seem confused, have red eyes, sweat a lot and
not care about their physical appearance.
We are very interested to make a research on this topic because one of our members in our
lecture have been experienced the drug abuse and his experience inspired us to do some
research on the topic of drug abuse among Kolej Matrikulasi Perak male student.

2.0 LITERATURE REVIEW
2.1 Types of drugs
Many researches have been done related to the drugs and types of drugs use.
According to the NHS choices.com (2013), there are four main drugs:
2.1.1 Cannabis
A tobacco-like greenish or brownish material made up of the dried flowering
tops and leaves of the cannabis (hemp) plant. Cannabis resin or "hash" is the
dried black or brown secretion of the flowering tops of the cannabis plant, which
is made into a powder or pressed into slabs or cakes.

A fine white or off-white powder that acts as a powerful stimulant. In its pure
form, cocaine is extracted from the leaves of the coca plant

dabbed on to gums or snorted in its powder form. The tablets can be in many

2.2 Reason for use drugs
The website of casapalmera.com (2012) provides some information on the reasons for use
drugs:
2.2.1 To fit in
When hanging out with friends, its easy for people to want to fit in and seem like one
of the crew. If others are drinking or doing drugs, its very likely for someone to fall
into that trap. Peer pressure can be a tremendous force causing someone to try things
they would normally not try on their own.

2.2.2 Stress
A recent study by the Partnership for a Drug-Free America showed that 73 percent of
teens report the number-one reason for using drugs is to deal with the pressures and
stress of school.

2.2.3 Family Problem
It is well known that a parent with a drug or alcohol problem can have a negative
effect on their family members. You could say that the person with the problem is like
someone stuck in a bog. Only after they have done this will they be able to help tackle
the addiction problem.
2.2.4 Experiment
There's a lot of reasons. Some people have problems in life and resort to it or they fall
into peer pressure. To me being knowing those people there are many young people
doing drugs now because they don't see life as important. They have been through a
lot of bad stuff in life, face depression, and drugs just seems to be the easy way out
since it almost "releases them from the world" for a day.

2.2.5 To seem grown up
Adolescents often want to be treated like adults. Im not a kid anymore is a frequent
mantra, especially when they want privileges that come with age like using drugs
Its no surprise that theyre drawn to things that make them feel like an adult older,
more mature, more sophisticated.

2.3 Frequency of taking drugs
According to dhra.mil (2013), provides some information on the frequency of use drugs:
2.3.1 Experimental Use: Initial use for a maximum of six times, or more intensive use for
maximum of one month.
2.3.2 Occasional Use: Once a month or less.
2.3.3 Frequent Use: Once a week or less, but more than once a month.
2.3.4 Regular or Habitual Use: More than once a week.
2.4 Effects of drugs abuse
According to the NHS choices.com(2013),there are a few effect drugs :
2.4.1 Cannabis
Cannabis can make users feel relaxed and heighten their sensory awareness. Thus, users may
experience a more vivid sense of sight, smell, taste and hearing.
2.4.2 Cocaine
Cocaine can make users feel happiness and euphoric. Furthermore, users often experience a
temporary increase in alertness and energy levels, and a postponement of hunger and fatigue.
2.4.3 Ecstasy
Ecstasy can heighten users' empathy levels and induce a feeling of closeness to people around
them.
2.4.4 Methamphetamine
Methamphetamine stimulates a feeling of physical and mental well being, as well as a surge
of euphoria and exhilaration. Users also experience a temporary rise in energy.
According to the NHS choices.com(2013),there are a few drugs affect on health
2.4.5 Cannabis
Cannabis has been linked to mental health problems such as schizophrenia, and, when
smoked, to lung diseases including asthma. Cannabis affects how your brain works, so
regular use can make concentration and learning very difficult. Frequent use can have a
negative effect on your fertility. It is also dangerous to drive after taking cannabis. Mixing it
with tobacco is likely to increase the risk of heart disease and lung cancer

6 Drug Among Male Kolej Matrikulasi Perak Student
2.4.6 Cocaine
If you take cocaine, it is possible to die of an overdose from overstimulating the heart and
nervous system, which can lead to a heart attack. Taking cocaine is particularly risky if you
have high blood pressure or already have a heart condition. If you're pregnant, cocaine can
harm your baby and even cause miscarriage. If you snort cocaine, it can damage the cartilage
of your nose over time. If you inject it, you are at higher risk of dying due to an overdose, and
your veins and body tissues can be seriously damaged. If you share needles, you put yourself
at risk of catching HIV or viral hepatitis.
2.4.7 Ecstasy
Long-term use has been linked with memory problems, depression and anxiety. Ecstasy use
affects the body's temperature control and can lead to dangerous overheating and
dehydration. But a balance is important as drinking too much fluid can also be very
dangerous for the brain, particularly because ecstasy tends to stop your body producing
enough urine, so your body retains the fluid.
According to the drugabuse.gov(2013),there are an articles about effect of :
2.4.8 Methamphetamine
As a powerful stimulant, methamphetamine, even in small doses, can increase wakefulness
and physical activity and decrease appetite. Methamphetamine can also cause a variety of
cardiovascular problems, including rapid heart rate, irregular heartbeat, and increased blood
pressure. Hyperthermia (elevated body temperature) and convulsions may occur with
methamphetamine overdose, and if not treated immediately, can result in death.

2.5 Ways to reduced drugs use
According to the drugandalcoholrehab.net (2013), there are a few ways to reduce drugs:

2.5.1 Spend time with your family and friends.
Those with parents, families and good friends who are involved in their lives are more likely
to avoid drugs and alcohol. Families that spend time together, hang out and eat meals
together have more opportunities for insightful and/or continued conversation
2.5.2 Learn about the drugs and the risks
Many people are unaware of the side effects of the drugs they take, or how addicting they can
truly be. All patients that are put on prescription drugs should be warned about misusing the
pills, and be taught how to avoid addiction. Special care should be taken for people at a
higher risk for addiction
2.5.3 Get involved with a team or organization.
Find a healthy activity, group or sport your enjoy. Art, choir, 4H, animal tech, theater, music,
sport and spiritual or neighborhood-based groups can keep you busy, interacting with positive
peers and more likely to stay away from drugs and alcohol. Most sports teams apply strict
sobriety rules, creating an incentive to stay clean.
2.5.4 Use medications only as prescribed.
Trouble starts when people start increasing their dosage, taking medicine when they dont
really need it or self-medicating for their emotions more than their physical pain. Countless
individuals are prescribed medication for legitimate pain, only to wind up addicted to the
medication that was supposed to help, not hurt.
