screen-plays for Bollywoodmovies to supplement his meagreincomeas anauthor of satirical stories. Krishan
Chander'snovelsincludingtheclassic: EkGadheKi Sarguzasht(Autobiographyof aDonkey)havebeentranslated
intoover16Indianlanguagesandsomeforeignlanguages,includingEnglish.
Hisshort story"Annadata" (trans: TheGiver of Grain anobseqeuiousappellationusedbyIndianpeasantsfor
their feudal land-owners), wasmadeintothefilmDharti KeLal, byKhwajaAhmadAbbasin1946 whichled
tohisbeingofferedworkregularlyasascreen-writer byBollywood, includingsuchpopulist hitsasSharafat
1970.
About hisplaceof birthKrishanChander wrote: "LahoreisaplacewhereI wasborn, whereI waseducated,
whereI startedmyliterarycareer, whereI achievedfame. For peopleof mygenerationit isdifficult toforget
Lahore. It shinesinour heart likeajewel likethefragranceof our soul". Apart fromhislovefor Lahore
actuallyhewasborninWazirabad,District GujranwalaBritishIndia(nowinPakistan). KrishanChander spent
hischildhoodinPoonch, inthestateof Jammu& Kashmir, wherehisfather workedasthephysicianof
MaharajaPoonch. Hisnovel (Defeat) isrelatedtoKashmir'spartition. oneof hismost
popular novel isabout thechildhoodmemoriesof ayoungboywholivedwithhisparentsinKashmir. His
famousAfsanay(short stories) arethestoriesof Kashmiri villages, aswell asthoseof displacedexpatriatesand
rootlessurbanman. HeusedPahari (dialect of peoplelivinginPoonch) wordswhilewritinginUrdu.
Inthe1930shestudiedat FormanChristianCollegeandeditedtheEnglishsectionof thecollegehouse
magazine, andwasat that timeinterestedinEnglishwritings. Asthetheneditor of theUrdusectionof the
magazine, Mehr Lal Soni ZiaFatehabadi wasinstrumental tohiscareer inhavinggot publishedintheyear
1932Chander'sfirst Urdushort story"Sadhu".
Chander wasagainst theHindu-Muslimconflicts andmight actuallyhavebeenanatheist, ashewasa
committedCommunist & card-carryingPartyMember asmanyradical writersinIndiawereinthedecades
immediatelyprecedingthePartitionof thecountry. Theforcibledivisionof Kashmir in1948after thecreation
of IndiaandPakistanleft deepmarksonhiswritings.
HisliterarymasterpiecesontheBengal famineandthesavageryandbarbarismthat tookplaceat thetimeof the
partitionof Indiain1947aresomeof thefinest specimensof modernUrduliterature, but at other timestoohe
continuedrelentlesslytocritiquetheabuseof power, povertyandthesufferingof thewretchedof theearth. But
aboveall henever stoppedprotestingcasteism, fanaticism, communal violenceandterror. Hewasahumanist
andacosmopolitan.
KrishanChander diedworkingat hisdeskinMumbai on8March1977. Hehadjust startedtowriteasatirical
essayentitledAdabbaray-e-Batakh(Literaturefor aduck), andwrotejust oneline'Noorani kobachpanhi sey
paltoojanwaronkashaukhtha. Kabootar, bandar, rangbirangi chidiyaan' (sincechildhoodNoorani wasfond
Shikast Mitti Ke Sanam
of pet animalssuchaspigeons, monkeys, multi-colouredbirds') but beforehecouldcompletethesentencehe
succumbedtoamassiveheart attack. A FountainPark inPoonchCityof J&K(India) hasbeenrenamedas
KrishanChander Park inhislovingmemory. Hisstatuehasalsobeenerectedinthemiddleof theGarden.
