The deaPad Y510p 59400120 we are testing is currently priced somewhere around 1050 Euros to 1250 Euros (~$1443 to ~$1718) depending on the
(online) shop. Lenovo installs a powerful quad-core CPU under the hood of the 2.9 kilogram and 387 x 259 x 39 millimeter chassis to justify the price.
ntel's Core i7-4700MQ is presently very popular due to its high performance. The premium-range representative is accompanied by a swift 1600 MHz
DDR3 RAM bar with a memory capacity of 8 GB (max. 16 GB). Besides that, Lenovo uses a high-definition 15!-inch screen that is, unlike the
deaPad Y500, non-reflective.
The real highlight is found on the laptop's right. Lenovo installs a so-called ultra"a# slot that allows inserting many alternative components, such as a
further hard drive, an optical drive, or as in our case, a second graphics card. Rather than only one GeForce GT 755M, the review sample can make
use of a dual-$P% arra#. The GeForce GT 755M SL has to compete against the old GT 750M SL, as well as premium accelerators, such as the GTX
765M and GTX 770M. Thus, we will concentrate on speed in this review.
Buyers who want to save a bit of money, and who do not focus as much on performance will find something among the lower-priced single-GPU
models that are partly sold without an operating system. The deaPad Y510p 59400120 is powered by a large 1000 GB h#"rid hard dri&e (SSHD) with
a preinstalled version of Windows 8 64-bit.

Unfortunately, the chassis has not been modified in the course of the GPU update. Besides the unreliable and extre'el# (o""l# touchpad, the
display's sensitive, high-gloss bezel is still annoying. Lenovo should have also made the keyboard bed matte. More information about the casing can
be read in the earlier test report.

The ports' positioning is still unfa&ora"le. The distribution that is concentrated on the sides' front will annoy both left-handed and right-handed users
when using an external mouse. That applies to the USB ports (1x 2.0 + 2x 3.0), the HDM and VGA out, as well as the RJ45 Gigabit LAN port, among
others. Only the Kensington lock and power socket have been cleverly placed in the laptop's rear area.
While no interfaces are on the rear, a card reader is located on the front. A *+,p (e"ca' and two microphones are found above the screen. The
laptop does not feature a fingerprint scanner, eSATA or FireWire port.
Co''unication
ntel's Centrino Wireless-- ++., takes care of wireless communication. Despite the well-known brand name, it performance was only satisfactory.
The signal strength at most displayed 1-2 bars, if at all, when the laptop was used over ten meters away from the router, and had to transmit through a
few walls. However, most laptops barely do a better job in this scenario. The 2.4 GHz adapter technically supports Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n and Bluetooth 4.0
(300 Mbit/s maximum).

/aintenance
Like the deaPad Y500, the successor's 'aintenance options are good. Although it is not possible to directly access the processor or primary graphics
card, which are connected to the (accessible) casing fan via the heat pipe, it is easy to access the Wi-Fi module, both working memory banks, and the
2.5-inch slot after removing the base plate. The screenshots below illustrate how to remove the ultrabay tray.

Soft(are
Lenovo installs a lot of software on the deaPad Y510p - too much for our taste. A few programs are slightly redundant and only slow down the system.
The handy OneKey Recovery and clearly arranged Energy Management are praiseworthy. Some users will also appreciate Po(erD0D 1,, as well as
the trial versions of Office 365 and McAfee's nternet Security. A "real" recovery DVD is not included.
1ccessories
The only accessories are a setup poster and leaflets. Lenovo opted for a strong 1*, (att po(er suppl# to ensure that the components are sufficiently
powered. t weighs a total of 684 grams. The 6-cell battery only weighs half as much with 322 grams.

While the deaPad Y500 was fitted with a glare-type screen from LG Philips (LP156WF1-TLC1), Lenovo uses a 'atte3 Full 4D 'odel in the Y510p.
Although the new screen has a similar name (LP156WF1-TLB2), some rates are very different.

The biggest improvement is the higher "rightness. We measured 362 cd/m in contrast to 259 cd/m (+40%). The great brightness makes the laptop
ideal for outdoor use. Content remains recognizable even in direct sunlight.
We were not as satisfied with the brightness distribution. An illumination of 72% is fairly poor, even if this shortcoming is barely noticed in practical use.
The 'iddling "lack &alue has a slightly greater effect. 0.7 cd/m leads to a certain grayish cast in dark video and game scenes.

We have to mention the "luish cast common for laptops. The colors and color balance partly deviate greatly from the ideal in an uncalibrated state.
Thus, professional users should look for another device. For example, the Alienware 14 and Gigabyte P34G do a better job here. However, color space
coverage of 82% sRGB and 56% AdobeRGB are good in the laptop sector.

Talking about good: The contrast of 550:1 moves toward the midfield. The image subjectively looks saturated, which is not lastly due to the decent

Processor
The new 4as(ell generation will not be an unknown name to most gamers. ntel's swift 2.4-3.4 GHz Core i7-4700MQ starts off the premium, or quad-
core segment. The 22 nm model can process eight threads at the same time via Hyper Threading. A 6 MB L3 cache is also a guaranty for high speeds.
Like the more expensive Core i7-4800MQ and Core i7-4900MQ models, the TDP is 47 watts.
The integrated HD Graphics 4600 graphics chip cannot be used in the configuration at hand. The SL array prevents graphics switching based on
Nvidia's Optimus technology. According to our information, Optimus should be available in the single-GPU models.

5ur"o Boost
We find it especially aggravating that Lenovo did not eli'inate the 5ur"o6s 7dead 8one7. The Core i7-4700MQ frequently dropped to its base clock
under simultaneous CPU and GPU load. However, it was usually 3.2 - 3.4 GHz when only the processor was loaded. Fortunately, the missing Turbo
rarely had an adverse impact in the gaming benchmarks because the graphics power mostly dominates. We would nevertheless advise the
manufacturer to deal with this issue.

Lenovo combines two GeForce GT 755M chips into a powerful dual-GPU array. The Direct> 11 scion lures customers with 384 unified shaders, and a
large 2048 MB GDDR5 memory (128-bit interface).
Compared with the GeForce GT 750M, Nvidia has slightly increased the core's clock. The GT 755M works with 980 rather than 967 MHz. Up to 1097
MHz would even be possible during load owing to the $P% Boost technology (according to the GPU-Z tool). Like the Kepler models, the GT 755M is
built in the 28 nm process.
The $P% dri&er should be updated regularl# to ensure the best performance in new games. The ForceWare 331.82 driver that was used in our

When the SL is enabled, the deaPad Y510p is not located in the mid-range, but in the high-end range. Even premium devices have to be wary owing
to Nvidia's good driver development. The GeForce GT 755M SL's enormous power becomes evident in the 3DMark 13 FireStrike test, among others.
With a graphics score of 4106 points, the dual-graphics array places itself right between the GTX 770 (3347 points @ Asus G750JX), and the Radeon

Although the review sample sports a hybrid hard drive, the laptop sometime works noticeably slower than a device with a solid state drive in Windows
routine. The 9.5 mm thick Seagate S51,,,L/,12 compensates for the relatively low speed (5400 rpm) with a high capacity (1000 GB), and a small 8
GB flash memory that takes care of frequently used data.
Most HDDs do not achieve a sequential read speed of 112 MB/s or a write rate of 100 MB/s (CrystalDiskMark). The HD Tune tool recorded an average
transfer rate of 87 MB/s, which is also a good result. The access time is approximately 19 ms. Modern solid state drives manage less than 0.1 ms and
are also superior to the SS4D in small files (e.g. One K73-3S).
Replacing the 2.5-inch drive or buying the corresponding model should be considered when the maximum is to be retrieved from the deaPad Y510p.

Leaving out an SSD is also noticed in the system tests. 3459 points in PCMark 7 is achieved by much weaker laptops, such as Dell's XPS 14-L421X
(Core i7-3517U & GeForce GT 630M). However, 4152 - 4564 points in PCMark 8 are decent and can compete with more expensive premium laptops
(Asus G750JH, Alienware 17, MS GS70 Stealth, etc.).

As expected, the GeForce GT 755M SL struggles with the typical drawbacks of a dual-GPU array. Besides the high driver dependency, it is primarily
'icro-stutters that are quite distinctive in the deaPad Y510p. Despite usable frame rates, the gameplay often does not seem very smooth.
Although the GeForce GTX 770 lags behind by over 10%, the image looks smoother with a single high-end chip. The SL array tears past a GTX 765M
by almost 50%. t can be seen that Nvidia designs good drivers in the single GT 755M. 5he s#ste' onl# co'putes a"out half as fast (hen SL) is
disa"led.
Most titles can be played in the native resolution with nice looks when anti-aliasing and maximum graphics options are not used (concerns 2ssassinBs
?reed #1, ?rysis 3, +etro/ Last Light & Far ?ry 3). This is not a matter of course for a 1100 Euros (~$1512) laptop. A few games like 8ota 2, G3#8 2,
and :ioShoc0/ #ninite are even accelerated to over 40 fps (average).
We would not recommend for less savvy users to buy a dual-GPU system though. rregular maintenance could cause performance losses (no SL
profile in the driver).

The deaPad Y510p is surprisingl# quiet considering it is a laptop with two graphics cards. n contrast to other SL contenders, such as the Clevo
P370SM barebone, even sensitive users will find the noise development tolerable. 30 - 31 dB(A) in idle operation stands for a barely audible level that
comes close to the deaPad Y500 - despite better hardware.
The casing fans spin with almost 35 dB(A) in 3D operation, which can also be called acceptable. The device only becomes more audible during full
load. 44 dB(A) was reached when Prime95 and Furmark ran at the same time in the test. Some gaming laptops, e.g. MS GE60H, climb beyond 50
dB(A) even with slower graphics chips.
Although we did not find the deaPad Y510p's fan characteristic ideal, the cooling works &er# d#na'icall# and (ithout 'assi&e fluctuations.

The moderate system noises naturally have an impact on the temperatures. Both the processor and the primary graphics card approached the critical
1,, DC range when the system was maxed out. The Core i7-4700MQ throttled to 800 MHz due to the extreme rates. This was also true to almost the
same extent for the secondary GT 755M with 100-200 MHz. However, throttling will not be an issue in normal (gaming) routine.
t can also get quite warm on the exterior. A maximum of 53 C on the upper side and 46 C on the underside (after an hour of full load) were a bit high.
At least the cooling's setup kept the wrist rest below 40 C. The laptop remained considerably cooler in idle operation with an average of 30 C.

Speakers
Lenovo installs a +, s#ste' fro' EBL in the laptop. The speakers located above the keyboard produce a decent sound that surpasses that of most
contenders. Not every laptop can boast with a certification for Dol"# 4o'e 5heater &2.
Although the deaPad Y510p does not sport a subwoofer, a slight "ass is audible in music, games, and movies. The good maximum volume for a 15-
inch device is another bonus point, although it should not be overdone for precision reasons. All in all, the manufacturer has done a good Fo". We
would not say that external speakers are a must.

The po(er consu'ption is accepta"le in view of the high-performance. The deaPad Y501p consumes a bit more power than identically swift laptops
(11.3 - 26.1 watts @ Toshiba Qosmio X70-A-11R) with 15.5 - 31.6 watts in idle. However, the 15-inch device does not feature graphics switching.
The omitted Optimus technology is unimportant in full load. 113 - 136 watts in the first part of 3DMark06 and a maximum of 140 watts during the stress
test could also be the rates of a premium laptop with a single-GPU (Gigabyte P25W: up to 132 watts).

The battery runtime is not one of the deaPad Y510p strengths. Despite the strong 6-cell model (now 72 rather than 62 Wh), the laptop is drained
quite soon. The all-rounder had to be reconnected to the outlet after 88 minutes in Battery Eater's Classic test, which simulates high load.
Better runtimes can be achieved when SL is disabled and the brightness is reduced. The battery ran through our internet test for almost three hours. A

The verdict from our last review also applies to the new version. Lenovo's deaPad Y510p is a unique 'ulti'edia laptop that turns into a swift gamer
due to the ultrabay.
Apart from the micro-stutters and dri&er dependenc#, the GeForce GT 755M SL is unexpectedly impressive. While buyers have to invest over 1500
Euros (~$2062) with other manufacturers for appealing performance, the deaPad Y510p only costs a bit more than 1000 Euros (~$1375). This price
not only includes an a"o&e-a&erage sound qualit#, but also a bright Full HD screen. The noise emissions do not give much reason for complaint
either.
The buyer has to be willing to make compromises in other areas though. Besides the sensiti&e displa# "e8el, the interface positioning also proves to
be annoying. The battery runtime, the touchpad and the temperatures could also be better. The main point of criticism is the CPU's Turbo that is
disabled in high load.
Nevertheless, the deaPad Y510p has fully earned the grade "Good". The exciting ultra"a# design lets the device stick out from the masses. Worthy
15-inch alternatives (GTX 770M or faster) would be Gigabyte's P25W and Clevo's P150SM and P157SM barebones.
