Most of us live in cities. We don't know about the animals
lives very much. We see some of the animals in the streets
and zoos but we dont know their eating habits, needs and
talking with other animals.

VIRUSES
We get sick because of many different infectious diseases.
Viruses or bacteria make us sick. Viruses are much smaller

example, while our throat may hurt with some kind of colds,

HOWDO DISEASES SPREAD?
We know that infectious diseases spread and there are
some ways for their spreading. When you touch a sick persons
things or you are in the same place with sick people, the
germs spread. Because the germs cause diseases and they
5 can go from person to person in the air.
Germs spread by traveling in water or food. Some simple
methods can help us to remove the germs from food and
water. For example we can keep the germs away by washing
the fruits and vegetables.

CHINESE LANGUAGE
Chinese language is the official language of China. Its
also one of the official languages of Singapore. It is one of
the oldest living languages because it has been spoken since
about 2000 B.C. Over one billion people speak it.

Have you ever heard that dolphins can communicate?
Yes, they can, but their communication is different from us.
They often make sounds to talk to each other. Dolphins use
these sounds to make signals. For example, an injured dolphin

IPHONE DRIVES THE CAR!
Since Apple introduced the iPhone, thousands of
applications have been developed for it. Recently, computer
scientists in Germany have written an application to make
the iPhone a remote control for the car.
5 The name of the application is Driver. It allows the driver
to operate cars with a few touches on the phones touchscreen.
The driver can do this while he is outside the car. The driver

Barbara could not stand the loud sound any more. I_twas

FIGHT AGAINST DISEASES
Our body has different kinds of methods to save us from
germs. For example, our skin is a good cover for our body.
It doesn't let the germs get in if we dont have any cut. Germs
can only get in through our nose and mouth, but hairs and

Most of us have waken up with the sound of birds outside.

Almost all of us watch the animated cartoons with pleasure.

THE PORTUGUESE
The Portuguese were the first Europeans to explore and
trade with Sub - Saharan Africa. They began by sailing south
along Africas western coast.
The Portuguese explorations began with Henry the

THE OTTOMANS AND OSMAN BEY
Osman Bey was bom in 1258. He was the son of Erturul
Gazi. He founded the Ottomans in St. In 1284 the Anatolian
Seljuk Sultan recognised Osman Bey as chief of the tribe.
At the same time the situation in Anatolian Seljuk was very
5 tragic. Because they could not resist the lihanlis attacks from
Iran.
In that period, Byzantium was in chaos, too. Because there
were fights for the throne and the Balkan kings were attacking.
The Empire couldnt control the tekhfurs - Greek governors
10 and people were unhappy with high taxes. Osman Bey used
the weak condition of the Byzantine and invaded the tekhfurs
cities of Karacahisar, Bilecik, Yarhisar and negl. When
Alaaddin III, Anatolian Seljuk Sultan, saw this success, he
gave the cities nn and Eskiehir as a present in 1289.
15 When the llhanli Sultan Mahmud Gazan Han took Alaaddin
III to Iran and killed him, there was a lack of authority. So,
the Ottoman announced the independence in 1300 and
Osman Bey coined his money to ensure his authority.
In 1301, Osman Bey conquered Yeniehir and Kprhisar.
20 He made Yeniehir the Ottomans capital. The tekhfurs of
Bursa, Orhaneli and Kestel did not want the Ottomans. So
they attacked the Ottomans at Koyunhisar with the Byzantine
Empire in 1302. It was the first war between the Byzantines
and the Ottomans. The war ended with the victory of the
25 Ottomans. Then the tekhfur of Bursa gave his city in 1326 to
Orhan Bey, the son of Osman Bey.
