FIGHT AGAINST DISEASES
Our body has different kinds of methods to save us from
germs. For example, our skin is a good cover for our body.
It doesn't let the germs get in if we dont have any cut. Germs
can only get in through our nose and mouth, but hairs and
5 mucus in our nose and saliva in our mouth save us from
them.
Sometimes germs come in our body and our body fights
to kill them with our white blood cells. White blood cells are
more than normal. When we get sick, they can kill them.
10 Fever is another fighting way against germs in our body.
If a fever goes too high, it can be dangerous, but it kills the
germs. Because some germs cant live when it is hot.
Taking medicine also helps our body fight against diseases.
Our doctor gives us some medicines to kill germs. The diseases
15 which are caused by bacteria can be cured, but most viruses
cant be killed by medicines. However, some medicines can
help us feel better while our body fights against disease germs.

for them but sometimes we can be afraid of them. We believe
that they do not leave us and they are harmless for their

The behaviours of a dog and wolf are almost the same.

eat very fast. The idiom wolf down food comes from this
behaviour. It means eating fast.

Can we live without dreams? Can we think that an artist
does not dream? Of course the answer is no. Because we
cannot renew ourselves without dreams.
Every musician has a style and colour. We want to see
5 where we have come with our efforts. If people do not wonder
the answer, they cannot be a good musician. It is important
to develop ourselves in music. If we fail to do this, we cannot
give any messages to our audiences. So, what are the
messages? They can be love, happiness, sadness and
10 disappointments of the composers who lived centuries ago.
This means that we must leave our identities, and then
we become the real artists.
Music is an ancient art and when we have inner peace, we
can perform well in this ancient art. But, the world is full of

ANIMATION
Almost all of us watch the animated cartoons with pleasure.
But we don't know there must be a lot of drawings for only
a second in a film. For example, pictures must be repeated
many times to show a person walking. They need many
5 drawings. The first drawing may show the person with both
feet on the ground, then in the next drawings the left foot
comes. In other drawing the right foot meets the left foot,
finally the mans feet are together.
Each of all these pictures is called a frame and every one
10 of them is the same as the others. All of these pictures form
an animated cartoon and we call the art of movement as
animation.
We can see the things as if they were moving thanks to the
animation. The things that cant move in real life seem to be
20 alive when they are animated. Therefore, artists draw many
pictures to make an animated film and many people work to
make a cartoon. In the past, it took two or three years to do
well a two hour cartoon. However, the time is shorter than the
past with the help of technology these days.

LIGHTEST SOLID IN THE WORLD
They look like smoke and they are so light that their
nickname is "Frozen Smoke. But do not make any mistake
about it, the airy looking transparent aerogels are not only
the worlds lightest solids, but also, among the strongest.
5 Now, scientists have found out how to make them even lighter
and more flexible.
Aerogels are manufactured materials that are obtained
from a gel. Its liquid portion has been replaced with a gas.
The result is a lighter and stronger solid. A block of a human
10 size aerogel weighs 455 grams, but, it can support half a ton

THE HOTTEST PLANET
A team from Keele University in Staffordshire in the UK j
discovered the hottest planet in our universe. According to j
the researchers, the temperature on Wasp-33b is 3,200CI j
The planet is four and half times the size of J upiter, and it J
5 is 380 light years away from Earth. According to the scientists j
there are two reasons for Wasp-33bs high temperature. j
The first one is that it is very near to its sun. So, it takes j
only 29,5 hours to complete Its orbit around it. The second j
reason is the temperature of its sun. It is 7,160C, it means j
10 it is 1,560C hotter than our sun. Because our sun is only at j
5,600C. Before the scientists discovered Wasp-33b, they j
thought the hottest planet was Wasp-12b. It is 600 light years
away. It is about 2300C because it is very near its sun, too.
We have discovered only a few hundred planetary systems.
15 But it is very few because there are bilions of planetary systems
in the universe. So there can be a lot of hotter planets to
discover. It is very amazing when we think that only 20 years
ago, the hottest planet was Venus. Its temperature is 460C! r,

Gena was enjoying the day at Ukraines Dnipropetrovsk
Aquarium. He was with the three other crocodiles. They were
getting out of the water to impress the visitors. But the poor
crocodile will never forget the day!

arm with her phone in hand. Suddenly, the phone slipped
and fell into the water next to Gena. He immediately swallowed

The officials did not believe Rimma until they heard the
phone ringing inside Genas stomach. Everybody thought
that Gena could digest buffaloes, cattle and even humans.
So, the small phone was not a problem for him.

since he swallowed the phone. He stHl did not eat anything

CROCODILES
Have you ever heard about crocodile tears? When we say
tears we think that someone is crying. But crocodiles dont
cry, indeed. When they eat their preys, tears come down
from their eyes without any feeling of sadness! So people
5 use this phrase for false sadness. If we first mention about
the preys of the crocodiles, we can say that they have a great
appetite for nearly every kind of animals. Some of them are
small insects, fishes, birds, and also big lions and tigers. It
is very amazing that they eat once a week unlike human
10 beings. Dont forget that we eat at least 20 times a week!
Crocodiles catch their victims, pull them into the water,
and hold the creatures down under the water until they are
drowned.
Imagine that you come across a huge crocodile in the wild.
15 How frightening it is, isn't it? But there is something you can
do if you know a clue about their running style. They can run
quickly but cant change direction very easily. Therefore you
should run in a zigzag path. And after a while it will have to
find itself a new victim other than you!
20 Nature is beyond our limitations in most cases. For example hj
giant crocodiles let little birds clean their teeth and mouths 'i-i
after their meals but they don't eat those birds! Crocodiles
now have clean teeth and birds eat their meals! -~

ANTS
4-B
Ants are known to be very hard working and the most
common insects on earth. In some aspects human and ants
are the same. For example, they both live in communities.
They are called colonies. More than hundreds or thousands
5 of ants can live in one colony.
There is a distinction of labor among ants. Some are
workers which build nests by digging the soil. Others protect
the nests by digging the soil. Others protect the nest from
enemies and keep it clean. The task of the third group is to
10 gather food and keep it for later use. The young are looked
after by some ants. There is only one authority in the colony,
the Queen. She lays eggs and bears ants and so deserves
to be the ruler of the ant community.
According to the environment the kind of food that an ant
15 eats changes. They can eat seeds, grasses, small insects
and even honey.
Some honey ants eat so much honey that they swell like
a ball. They hang themselves on the wall of the nest.
Like some animals ants sleep during winter, too. They
20 sleep in their nests but in deepest points.

Oscar Pistorius was born in 1986. People call him "the
fastest man without legs. We call him amazing.
Oscar was born without a fibula - the long thin bone that
forms the outside of the ankle - in both his legs. When he
5 was 11 months old, his parents decided to cut off both his
lower legs and give him artificial legs. Six months later, Oscar
was walking on his artificial fiberglass legs.
Because of this, Oscar has never thought of himself as
disabled. At school, he played tennis and rugby. He also tried
10 wrestling. In 2004, he had an injury while he was playing rugby.
So, he started to run.
He fell in love with running and in three years he won many
gold medals in the Paralympic Games (for athletes with
disabilities). He holds the world record for 100m, 200m and
15 400m.
People think of him as disabled but he believes he is

J upiter is the largest planet in our solar system. We know
it with two red lines. One in the southern hemisphere and the
other in the northern. But recent photographs show that the
lower stripe disappeared.
5 Scientists say that the stripe was on the planet three months
ago before it disappeared behind the sun. When the planet
came back, the stripe had disappeared. The experts do not
know why it happened but they have a theory.
J upiter is a huge ball of gas and liquid. There are layers
10 of red, brown, yellow and white clouds. The darker clouds
are made up of sulfur and phosphorus. These chemicals
make the clouds heavy so they are at the bottom. The crystals
of frozen ammonia form the lighter white clouds so they float
on the top.
15 Some scientists believe that the white clouds hide the red
clouds. When white clouds move, the red clouds become visible.
But the experts hope that the largest planet in our solar system

Cats and humans have been living together for thousands
of years. Scientists believe that ancient Egyptians domesticated
cats first in about 2500 BC. The domestic cat belongs to
the cat family. It is a reiativeof the lion, tiger, cheetah, puma,
5 leopard, jaguar and panther. It lives in a house with a family
but it sometimes behaves like a member of the cat family. A
cat hardly ever changes its behavior. It tries to catch a toy
as if it were a prey. It can have a lot of food at home, but it
sometimes catches mouse.
10 All cats feed on other animals. They are very intelligent
hunters. They have keen senses of smell, sight, and hearing.
The cat has perfect night vision, but its daylight vision is not
very good. The cats hearing is really good. It can hear most
sounds. The cats sense of smell is also perfect. With these
15 great senses, they find their prey easily. A cat waits for his
victim to come closer, and jumps on it. Their claws and teeth
are very sharp and they use them to kill their prey.
A domestic cat lives for about 15 years. There are about
600 million domestic cats in the world. The female cat has
20 nearly 4 kittens for each time. They are born blind and deaf.
The female cat teaches their babies how to hunt.

WRITTEN RECORDS
Most records that we have from people of the past are in
writing. Written records let ancient peoples speak to us more
directly. These records are not always easy to understand,
though. Different kinds of writing were invented in different
5 times and places. Archeologists often disagree about what
ancient writings mean. Some of these writings cannot be
read by anyone now living. They are like a secret code that
we cannot understand easily.
Important changes in record keeping were made after
10 writing began. People started to write on paper or animal
skin instead of on clay or stone tablets, for example. The
printing press was invented about 1450 and it allowed many
copies of records to be made. This invention made it valuable
for growing numbers of people to learn to read and write.
15 They could use the written records of others and make their
own. People still used other forms of record keeping after
they began to use writing. They did - and still do - leave
records in their artifacts, art, and stories.

Diamonds are one of the hardest naturally formed minerals
on Earth. The only mineral hard enough to cut a diamond Is
another diamond. Perfect diamonds are used for jewelry.
Imperfect diamonds that cannot be sold as gems have
5 numerous industrial uses. Because they are hard, diamonds
are used to drill through rock. This makes them valuable to
the oil industry. They are also used in special saws that cut
rock and metal and in most phonograph needles.
Diamonds are formed in the earth from carbon. It takes
10 millions of years and tremendous pressure and heat for the
earth to form a diamond. Although some diamonds are found
on the surface, most are mined in the same way as some
metals.
Diamonds are found in many colors. Some are transparent,
15 or clear; others are not. Diamonds used for gems are usually
clear. Pale - blue diamonds are the best but most are slightly
yellow. Industrial diamonds are gray or brown and cloudy in
appearance.

THE PORTUGUESE
The Portuguese were the first Europeans to explore and
trade with Sub - Saharan Africa. They began by sailing south
along Africas western coast.
The Portuguese explorations began with Henry the
5 Navigator, son of King J ohn I of Portugal. Prince Henry didnt
explore Africa but he hired men who did. Beginning about
1419, he paid mapmakers to make new maps of the area.
He paid navigators to improve such instruments as the
compass. He paid ship designers to make new ships that
10 could sail into the wind.
Prince Henry had good reasons for encouraging exploration
of the African coast. Like other countries of Europe, Portugal
wanted to buy spices and other goods from Asia. If they
could find a way to sail around Africa to India, they could buy
15 Asian goods without paying other countries.
Prince Henry died in 1460 but his dream lived on. In 1488,
a captain named Bartholomeu Dias became the first European
to sail around southern tip of Africa. Following him, Vasco

CLASS DISTINCTION IN SUMER
Sumerian society was made up of different groups, or
classes. This division took place because the work of some
people was valued more than the works of others. Some
people gained greater wealth or honors. The wealthiest
5 class consisted of the nobles. Nobles included important
priests and relatives of the king.
Most people were commoners. Commoners were
merchants, farmers, and skilled workers. Commoners could
both inherit and purchase land. Some commoners became

CHIMPANZEES
Chimpanzees are a kind of apes that live in the rain forests
in the tropics and are known to be very intelligent. The chimps
wander around the forest looking for food such as fruit, leaves
and insects. A chimpanzee uses its two hands as well as its
5 feet when it moves on the ground. A male chimp sometimes
walks upright screaming in order to show off its strength to
the others animals.
A young chimp does what adults do so that it learns
everything necessary for survival in the wild. For example, it
10 watches its mother make a nest and the young chimp does
the same again and again till it learns it fully.

An interesting life lies under a hard shell which is like an
armor. The animal with no teeth but powerful beak under
the shell is, of course, the turtle. The shell covers the whole
body of the turtle and protects it against its enemies. Generally,
5 turtles can live both on land and in water.
As it is told in a very popular cartoon, unlike rabbits, turtles
are very slow in walking and they cant run. But, when it
comes to food, they can whip their head out with amazing
speed to catch it. Turtles bite enemies with their sharp,
10 powerful beaks. For example, a turtle waits for its victim at
the edge of a pond, lake or stream. When a bird comes for
a drink the turtle shoots out its head and snatches the creature
in its beak. And there come the happy hours for dinner!
Like some other animals, turtles hibernate too in places
15 where the winter is very severe and cold. They sleep through
that period hidden in the soil or water.
Some turtles like the color red. They can eat anything that
is red. If keepers should give them medicines, they put them
in tomatoes so that they eat it easily and quickly.

FROGS
When it is summer, and if we are living near a lake or
pond we are disturbed by the ongoing sounds of the frogs
and probably shut the doors not to let those croaks come
in.
5 Small animals with smooth skin, frogs can live in water
and on land. They have powerful back legs with which they
can leap from one place to another.
Frogs shoot out their long tongues to catch the insects
they want to eat. The sticky tip of the tongue makes it easy
10 to take hold of them.
Although frogs mostly live in water, they seldom drink
water. Frogs are fussy eaters, that is, they have very fixed
standards about eating habits. If they have eaten something
they dont normally like, they vomit. After the bad food has
15 gone out, the frog tries to fill its stomach again. Suppose the
children could do the same thing? How relaxed they would
be after their parents make them eat vegetables or something
they have to eat!
Snakes, birds, foxes, and fish are all frogs enemies.
20 However, frogs have some ways to escape from them. One
of them is blending with the ground on which it sits. Because

GINGER: THE NEWWONDER
Many Indian grandmothers have always used ginger as
an essential part of their kitchens and also medicine boxes.
However, Westerners have learnt about the wonderful qualities
of it recently. Now they think that ginger is an influential
5 medicine against nausea.
It was thought in India that the juice squeezed from ginger
and mixed with lime juice is perfect if you feel like vomiting.
Generally sick people particularly children don't like, even
hate medicines. Because the taste of the ginger mixture is
10 also not appealing, sugar is often advisable. Then you can
persuade your child or the person who doesnt feel well by
saying that this is not a medicine but a sweet syrup!
Nowadays scientists from Britain are studying on the effect
of the spice on various types of nausea such as seasickness
15 and sickness that is caused by the treatment of cancer.
Fortunately, these studies have begun to show results. The
people who were given a tablet of the gingers juice every
day felt much better than the people who took conventional
medicine.
20 When all these studies come to the conclusion that ginger
is an ideal solution, companies will manufacture it as a herbal
medicine.
