The Ba&eri !ankramana festi&al normally takes place in midH;cto-er" #t
is associated with the ri&er Ba&eri, which flows through the district from
its source at Talaka&eri"
At a predetermined time, when the sun enters Tula &asi (Tula
san!ramana), a fountain from a small tank fills the larger holy tank at
Talaka&eri" Thousands of people gather to dip in this holy water" The
water, called tirtha, is collected in -ottles and distri-uted to e&ery home
throughout Bodagu to -e preser&ed" A spoonful of this water is fed to
the dying, in the -elief that they will attain mo!sha (spiritual
emancipation) and gain entry to hea&en"
;n this day, married women wearing new silk saris perform puEa to a
&egeta-le, sym-oli9ing the goddess Ba&eri" The &egeta-le is usually a
cucum-er or a coconut, wrapped in a piece of red silk cloth and
decorated with flowers and Eewels (mainly 3=athak3 (/oda(a
Mangalasuthra))" This is called the /anni 5u7e" Banni refers to the
goddess =ar&ati, who incarnated as Ba&eri" Three sets of -etel lea&es
and arecanut are kept in front of the goddess with -unches of glass

day, and this is the only festi&al among the Boda&as where only

5uttari means ne rice and is the rice har&est festi&al (also
called huttari in the adEacent BannadaHspeaking country)" This takes
place in late No&em-er or early >ecem-er" ,ele-rations and
preparations for this festi&al start a week in ad&ance"

common family house), which is decorated with flowers and green
