AUGUST 1988 NEWSLETTER
WE'RE HERE!! On Thursday, July 20, we arrived in Lilongwe, the capilol city of
Malawi. We were met at the airport by Vonnie's parents, Bill and Jackie Brant. We
loaded all of our luggage into the Brants' car and small trailer and drove three hours
to Biantyre, the city where we will be living. We had a long but enjoyable flight
over. Our lay over in Amsterdam allowed us to catch up on sleep and begin to adjust
to the time change, as well as do some sight-seeing.
GETTING SETTLED Our time in Malawi thus far has been spent in recovering from jet
lag and getting ourselves oriented and organized. As we write this newsletter, we've
only been in Malawi two weeks, so we're just now starting to get adjusted to the time
change, climate change, etc. We will be filling in for the Brants while they are on
furlough from September until January, as well as slaying in their house, so we are
learning how to fulfill the various responsibilities of their work.
WHAT LIES AHEAD. During the next few months, will begin that "ever so fun" process
of language learning. We are searching now for the best methodology for learning
Chichewa, as there are a number of classes and learning techniques to choose from.
Also during this time we will sizing up the work. With the church in Malawi being so
large and growing so rapidly, it will probably take some time to gain an accurate
understanding of the state of the work here.
STEVE'S FIRST SERMON IN MALAWI. On Saturday July 29, I had the opportunity to
preach my first sermon in Malawi! The occasion was an area church conference in
the far southern part of Malawi. Gathered at this conference were church members
and church leaders from all over that region as well as from Mozambique. What a joy
it was to share with them from God's Word!
FINANCIAL UPDATE. As many of you know, we had a very unwelcome surprise in
early July. We were informed that a new policy demanded that we establish a special
exit fund of 7000 Kwacha, approximately $2,600, in a Malawian bank before we could
receive a work permit. We praise God that we now have the money in the bank to
cover this! Our biggest need at this point is to build funds for the purchase of a truck.
We currently have no transportation of our own at . all. We need to raise
approximately $9,000 in the next few weeks to purchase a vehicle. Although not
complete, monthly support has been coming in. We are hoping and praying that we
will be able to write to you soon that all the monthly support has been commited.
PRAYER NEEDS. Please be in prayer about the following:
Support 'for Truck
and Von's Language Training to Needs of Malawians

Dear Christian Friends,
We need you to help us make a difference in Malawi, Africa.
In the New Testament Jesus once said that "the fields are white
unto harvest." This statement could not be more true of Malawi!
The church there has grown froJiL^lO jconareaations in 1979 to well
over 150 congregations currently. Includrrig the churches that
have been started in neighboring Mozambique, an oppressive com
munist country, the total number of congregations is approximately
But currently there are pr^^^wo. families working in southern
Malawi and reaching over the ^ord^F''^W"6" Mozambique. Many churches
are lucky if a missionary can visit their congregation once a
year! When one considers that most of these congregations are
^^^ry young and that there are only few trained national leaders,
^ the need in Malawi becomes ctfeyiPUS. Who will go to Malawi and
aid in training national leaders? Who will go to Malawi to help
young churches mature in Christ? Who will go to Malawi to reach
out to groups of natives, urban blacks, and Europeans that are
still unreached? Based upon the of Bill and Jackie
Brant, veteran missionaries to MaiawTTv^nie and I are willing
to ,go^ to Malawi to seek to meet those needs.
Vonnie and I have spent the last few years/ preparing our
selves for God's service. Vonnie, who is the daughter" of mis
sionaries Bill and Jackie Brant, received, her Associate degree
from Kentucky Christian College in 1986. I graduated suroma cum
laude from K.Cin 1987 with a major" in Bible and Christian
iHinistries an^T^am 'Currently working on Master of Arts degree
in Missions from Cincinnati Bible Seminary.
/
We have been preparing ourselves for the work, and we are
jgo...but we need your help. We are nnrr^n^iy gppirinrf
churches and individuals of faith and action who willa:^^J;;dadULS in
our endeavor to reach out to Malawi. We not only need to find
-inaxxt^iJ^suimorters who will help us toward our total need of
^ $3,000/month ( $2,000-Mission fund and $1,000-Salary), bat Tj:e.,
one-time gifts toward the great costs of rejjjcatij
(and" beginning a new life on the mission field!
will you help us make a difference in Malawi?! Feel free
to call us or write us for more information oh how you can make
a difference!!!
Yours in Christ,
Steve and Vonnie Skaggs

MALAWI - RIPE FOR HARVEST

MALAWI - {
In the New Testament Jesus once said that
"the fields are ripe for harvest." This statement
could not be more true of Malawi! The church
there has grown from 10 congregations in 1979
to well over 150 congregations currently. In
cluding the churches that have been started in
neighboring Mozambique, an oppressive com
munist country, the total number of congregra-
tions is apporximately 2501! Malawi Is certainly
ripe for harvest. The only question is "who will
go to work in the harvest?"
OUR PART IN THE HARVEST
We will be working in several areas of the mala-
wian work. Of course, as we begin we will be con
centrating on learning the language and culture
of the Malawian people. But as we become more
knowledgable in our understanding of Malawian
language and culture,we will work in the areas
of leadership development, preaching, teaching,
and new church developement. We will also be
involved in creating new programs, such as a pro
gram meeting the need for Christian education for
the young people.

Many of our friends have asked "when do you
want us to start supporting you?" It is presently
our goal to leave for the mission field In early Ju
ly 1989. Of course, we will need all of our sup
port at that time. Currently, however, Steve is
working as Youth Minister of Grove Church of
Christ in Gambier, Ohio. So our major need at this
point is the build up of funds to meet our large
one-time expenses and of funds for publicity and
support-raising. On January 1, 1989 we will be
leaving our position at Grove to raise support full-
time and make preparations to leave. At that time
we will need at least $600.00 per month to meet
living expenses before setting to the field. We
need your support! Prayerfully consider the
above needs and make a commitment to harvest
the fields and/or challenge your congragations to
be a partner with us.
