The NovalithIC family
powering high-current motor drives with innovative ICs
A S A B R O A D L I N E R in motion control, Infineon Technologies offers a rich,
varied selection of motor driver ICs and semiconductor solutions for a wide range of
actuators. Whatever the application automation, automotive, medical, robotics and
many more we have a solution that fits.
T O D A T E T H E L I M I T for fully integrated DC motor bridges constituted
continuous load currents up to about 10 A, a range well-served by TrilithIC multichip
modules. Higher currents required an H-bridge or three-phase bridge driver IC, alongside
low-ohm MOSFETs such as OptiMOS.
N OW T H E N O V A L I T H I C family is here to extend integrated motor drive
solutions typical current range to 68 A. Ingeniously engineered, it enables you to design
drivers for DC and three-phase motors quickly and easily. Load current sense, active
freewheeling, an adjustable slew rate and smarter features offer you an outstanding
opportunity to cut costs.

A look at the inventive design of NovalithIC
T H E N O V A L I T H I C P A I R S a p-channel high-side switch and an n-channel
low-side switch to create a half-bridge, adding an integrated circuit to protect the device.
The IC also features microprocessor-compatible logic level inputs, diagnosis with current
sense, slew rate adjustment and dead-time generation. Overtemperature, overvoltage,
undervoltage, overcurrent and short-circuit protection is part of the package. Two hallmark
features set this multichip, half-bridge configuration apart it generates neither charge
pump emissions nor cross-current. The half-bridge combines with others to form H-bridge
and three-phase drive configurations.

Thermal performance
N O V A L I T H I C I S A H A L F - B R I D G E . In contrast to H-bridges, its power
dissipation spreads over two packages, reducing the devices thermal load. A half-bridge
device is also remarkably flexible, allowing you to improve your layouts thermal
performance.
A C T I V E F R E E WHE E L I NG : NovalithICs actively open the appropriate FET when
freewheeling. Rather than using the body diode for freewheeling, the NovalithIC line
employs the FETs channel. This also reduces power dissipation in the device.
S WI T C H MODE C U R R E NT L I MI TAT I ON: Rather than limiting the current
to a certain value in current limitation mode, NovalithICs disables the FET that detects
overcurrent, and enables the other FET. Inhibiting the FETs function in the linear range
significantly reduces power dissipation in current limitation mode. Unlike in most other
devices, current limitation is a standard operating mode in NovalithICs. As long as
temperatures remain below the shutdown threshold, this mode remains enabled.
Special acquirements for your requirements
Current capability
WE E N G I N E E R E D NovalithICs to handle high currents, a case in point being
the BTS7970B with a typical rating of 68 A@25C. This capability is what makes these ICs
so well suited to so many applications. And with features to reduce power dissipation in
the device, the NovalithIC is the perfect solution for your high-current motor drives.
Current sense with digital failure signal
I N N O R M A L O P E R A T I N G M O D E (current sense), a current source connects
to the status pin, which delivers a current proportional to the forward load current flowing
through the active high-side switch. This lets you assess the load current, thereby adding
value and cutting system costs.
Diagnostics and protection
N O V A L I T H I C S C O M E WI T H A S E T of diagnostics and protective features
to safeguard devices against overtemperature, overvoltage, undervoltage, overcurrent and
short circuit. In failure mode, the status pin delivers a predefined current.
Electromagnetic Emission (EME)
WI T H O U T A C H A R G E P U M P, control circuit emissions are very low. And
with a variable slew rate, edge timing is easily adjusted to strike a balance between
emissions and switching loss.
