The growing presence of low-cost carriers (LCCs) with their cheap fares and new routes has
spiked the need for more airplanes. More maintenance, repair and operations (MRO)
services like xing and doing routine checkups will be required to prevent troubles from
arising and keep the aircrafts working properly.
Seeing the potential of the MRO industry, the governments Economic Transformation
Programme (ETP) by Pemandu has identied it as one of the sectors in the business
services entry of National Key Economic Areas (NKEA).
In eort to make Malaysia a regional MRO hub, initiatives to improve airport infrastructure

world-class aviation MRO facility in Malaysia that supports xed and rotary wing aircrafts.

including a dedicated environmentally control paint hangar.
Requirements to become an aircraft engineer
SPM leavers who wish to enter this eld need to have at least a C in
English, as mandated by the Department of Civil Aviation (DCA).
The licensure programmes which are oered by the ve
DCA-certied schools, takes four years to complete and prepares
the student for the Aircraft Maintenance License (AML) obtained
from the DCA.

Engineering programme is an extremely popular

Agency Safety Agencys B1-1 examinations, which is

Government schools
Malaysian government schools want to increase their quality of teaching by hiring more
qualied teachers. The government recently announced that the minimum requirement for
SPM leavers who wish to join the vocation is 7As in their SPM exam; previously the
requirement was 3As in SPM.
There are two ways to get into government schools - SPM leavers can take the Kursus
Perguruan Lepasan SPM (KPLSPM) and college graduates can take the Kursus Perguruan
Lepasan Ijazah (KPLI).

Unitar International University is a leader in

In the private school sector, there is a shortage of good teachers
specialised in English, Maths, Science and Bahasa Malaysia

National Higher Education Strategic Plan
(2011-2015), the government plans to have
75% of its lecturers with PhD at ve
research universities UM, USM, UiTM,
UKM, and UPM. Furthermore, they want to
have 40% of such lecturers at other
universities in the country.
To enable this goal, funding programmes
MyBrain15, MyPhD and MyMaster were
developed to provide funding studies at
postgraduate level.

aim to produce 60,000 Malaysians PhD
holders by the year 2023.
KPLSPM SPM leavers can take this 18-month course which
prepares them for the Program Ijazah Sarjana Muda
Perguruan (PISMP). PISMP is a continuation of KPLSPM. It will
award as students a Bachelors Degree in Teaching upon
completion. This course takes four years to nish and is
usually oered in late-March and will be announced in the
newspapers. After the programme, students need to go
through a job interview before getting assigned to a
government school.
KPLI Fresh university graduates who wish to teach in
government primary schools can take this course. They need
to pass an interview rst before being able to train in one of
the 27 IPGM. At the end of the programme, students must serve in any school or
education institutes, including those in rural areas, as required by the government. This
two and a half-year course is oered between the months of September and October.

Currently, a postgraduate qualication is not necessary to become a lecturer, but as
universities improve their global ranking, a PhD qualication becomes important. The
qualications that you need are a good bachelors degree, a masters and a PhD in the
relevant eld. Moreover, those who want to become a senior lecturer or associate
professor must have sucient teaching and publication experience.

of teaching young learners.

mechanical engineers. The current workforce is at 400,000

Chemical Engineering
Jobs for chemical engineers will become
available in the bioeconomy sector. They
are needed in the late stages of
development and manufacturing
(product development, process
development and manufacturing). More
biochemical companies are expanding
into Malaysia mainly because of the
countrys palm oil industry as a source of
renewable energy. Chemical engineers
who can do research and develop
commercialisation of advanced
biochemicals will be in demand.
Local and international pharmaceutical
companies will also need the expertise of
chemical engineers. In Sarawak alone,
RM35 million has been allocated to
attract major multinational
pharmaceutical companies to put their
new products on trial in the country.
Interested investors include Norvatis, the
worlds second largest pharmaceutical
company. In Johor, Biocon and Stelis
have already established their
biotechnology-related plants in Bio-Xcell

says Irene Savaree, CEO and President of
ICOM. Because of this, our primary advantage

To enter into ICOMs programmes, students
are required to have the minimum statutory
requirements of ve SPM credits for degrees,
three SPM credits for diplomas, and one SPM
credit for certicate level courses. There is
also an audition - students applying for
degree programmes must demonstrate their
performance skills on a principal instrument in
playing scales and arpeggios, improvising on a
12-bar blues piece, and performing in a range
of style idioms. The ability to read music
notation is not a prerequisite, as students can
learn during their course.

many O&G companies have been established in the past two years. These companies are
pushing hard to attract both local and overseas employees to this interesting and well
remunerated industry.
The Petronas RAPID project in Pengerang, Johor will require 10,000 qualied and skilled
welders, 1,000 blasters and painters, and hundreds of specialised skilled engineers such as
corrosion engineers, piping engineers, welding engineers, designer engineers as well as
supervisors and technicians.

Most of the local engineering positions
are still lled by expatriates. Fortunately, a
growing number of Malaysian engineers
are lling these positions due to their
extensive overseas exposure and
experience.
The government works with key industry
players to promote the services of Malay-
sian engineers and identify areas where
institutions can play a role in enhancing
and complementing the local O&G indus-
try. For example the Association of

require a university degree qualication. Those who are
new to the industry are usually provided with on-the-job
training by O&G companies through workshops and

The present graduates from local Malaysian universities
are unable to full the requirements of the O&G industry.
The kind of skills required for the O&G sector tends to be
very specic with ample training and skills development.
Hence organisations such as the Institute of Materials
Malaysia (IMM) are developing more local skills in
metallurgy, corrosion, coatings and welding to provide
employers with highly skilled workers.
Jobs currently in-demand:
Skilled technicians can earn from RM3,000 to RM7,000 monthly upon securing their
technical certicates. Industry reports show a potential growth in the welding industry, with
oil companies desperate for experienced welders to repair and maintain rigs. Most
certication courses do not have entry requirements though being procient in English is a
bonus in the O&G industry.
Welder joins pieces of metal permanently through a
welding processes; they also repair metal parts.
Welding Inspector conducts tests to nd any defects
or cracks that can adversely aect the safety of the
structure.
Blaster/Painter ensures that all the blasting and
painting equipment is kept in top working conditions.
Painter Supervisor responsible for the supervision of
all painting and blasting activities, making sure that all
tasks are carried out safely.
Corrosion Technician inspects, repairs and regulates a
metal pipelines structural integrity.
Corrosion Engineers analyses engineered materials
and nds solutions that will stop or slow down the
eects of corrosion.
