ust steps from the ocean and bays, there are pockets, blocks and neighborhoods that seemingly are frozen in time.
Forlorn, empty lots remain and splintered homes stand like wooden tombstones, their owners still waiting on aid that is
taking much too long to appear. What superstorm Sandy wiped out that fateful October night, red tape and bureaucracy
has left in place. Although much of the Shore is back, thousands of homes still are vacant; too many neighborhoods and
communities remain stilled. These are the stories of people who are trying to bring life back to Sandys ghost towns.

USA TODAY SHOOTING RAMPAGE LEAVES 7 DEAD IN CALIFORNIA PAGE 1B
Tom MacArthur says Steve Lonegan has lied about
MacArthurs background. Lonegan says MacArthur is
an insurance industry fat cat. And those are among the
mildest of the charges being tossed around in the Re-
publican primary to succeed Rep. Jon Runyan in New
Jerseys 3rd Congressional District.
MacArthur has filed a defamation lawsuit against
the Lonegan campaign. Lonegans response? A new
video titled Tom MacArthur Lies.
Monmouth University pollster Patrick Murray says
New Jersey has had its share of street brawl cam-
paigns, but the MacArthur-Lonegan matchup stands
out.
It will rank up there with the nastiest campaigns the
state has seen, Murray said. I cant say Ive seen one
this high-profile that has gotten this nasty this quickly.
The primary election is June 3. The district stretch-
es across the state through Ocean and Burlington coun-
ties. With Runyans announcement that he would retire
from Congress when his current term expires, Lonegan
was thought to have the inside track to get GOP backing
to hold the seat, but party leaders eventually threw
their support to MacArthur.
