The Atlantic Surfing Federation's Julie Hume Retires
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
May 31, 2014-Kill Devil Hills, NC The Board of Directors of the Atlantic Surfing Federation announces the retirement of its Executive Director, Julie Hume, with great sadness. The Board wishes Julie the very best as she opens the next chapter of her life. Julie's background and positive leadership in the surfing community is unparalleled, and without her leadership the ASF would not be where it is today.
In 2010, the founders of the ASF saw a need to provide competitive surfers on the East Coast, a modern, progressive surf program that was totally in tune with the programs of the International Surfing Association and Surfing America. With that goal in mind, the founders knew that they would need an Executive Director who would complement their vision, passion, and years of experience. The choice of the founders was unanimously, Julie Hume.
Julies experience encompassed a great deal. She began as a tabulator (back in the day when computers were not even thought of), she was a long time District Director with the Eastern Surfing Association, thus becoming the Head Tabulator of the ESA for many years, working with ASF Competition Director, Brian Broom at many Championship events, and multiple ASP events, which made her the natural choice to head the fledgling organization.
Having guided the ASF through these early years, and seeing an organization that has stayed true to its mission, Julie has decided to retire, effective May 31st, 2014.
"I have been blessed to have worked with such incredible people during all my years of involvement in this wonderful sport of amateur competition surfing," said Julie. "When asked to lead the organization, knowing those that were involved, and hearing their ideas, there was no question as to my decision. Their mission and platform is not duplicated anywhere in the USA, and they have remained dedicated, focused, and passionate from day one. Retiring from something that is such a part of who you are, is pretty tough. However, after laboring long and hard to make this decision, it is a good one. It is time for me to sit back and watch from the outside, spending more time enjoying my family. The ASF is a wonderful organization, full of life, family, and positive energy. I shall miss being a part of that, as well as working with such an incredible group of skilled volunteers. However, the foundation has been laid, their path is clear and consistent, and the time is right." "There is no good time to retire," she continued," but with a new season upon us, I have made the choice to turn the reins over to new blood and new energy. I cannot thank the ASF enough for the allowing me the opportunity to guide and lead them as they began building their dream for all east coast surfers, and I hope that my tenure was a positive one for them, but mostly for the organization." "Oh, and one last thing," Julie says, "Remember, in the ASF it is One Membership...Any Event...Global Points...Taking Surfing to the Next Level."
"Julie will be missed by all," said ASF competition Director Brian Broom, "and by no person more then I. I have worked with her for over 20 years, and that is hard to let go. I, myself, would not have taken on the role of CD had Julie not been selected to lead the organization. There is not one kid, one parent, one volunteer in any east coast organization who has not benefited from her input and help."
The Board is pleased to announce that Julie will remain a guiding force in East Coast surfing, in that she will retain a voting seat on the Board of Directors of the ASF, and it looks forward to her advice and counsel going forward.
