As we approach Spring,
TRRC has a very exciting calendar
lined up. We've just hosted an
extremely successful Freezer Fives
Series, thanks to the efforts of Gerald Radlauer and Barbara
Brittan. If the number of runners at these races are indicators of the
future attendance at our races, then we should have a banner year.
Ifyou missed these events, then you missed some exciting runners
and great times, particularly Mike Slinsky's course record 25:08 in
the ve mi l er.
Bob and Eileen Davis, along with Jim and Mary Whalen
are working hard to have another set of successful St, Patrick's Da\
Races. Owen McCrudden is out checking the mud and dirt for
"Mudders and Grunters". There is a reason for me to be going over
these events that start the year. Taconic has hundreds of members.
I'm asking each of you to actively participate in as many TRRC
events as possible. If you are in a racing mood, please race in a
Taconic event, as opposed to other area races (great going to the
TRRC members who passed on other races to do the Freezer
Five's!). Ifyou are on the injured list, I hope you get well soon, but
until then, why not call a race director and volunteer. If you can't
make it on race day, then how about taking TRRC race yers to
local libraries, grocery stores, town halls, tness clubs, doctor's
ofces, tocal pubs, and especially, other local and not-so-local
races. Also, if you have any great ideas that you have from other
races or your own brain trust...please share them with the race
coordi nator Ri ch Nash at 248-6666.
This request for help is not only for races, but for all the
on-going TRRC activities. This includes putting out water for the
Saturday "pump house" morning runs, picking up a Taconic
member to take to a race who has no transportation, participating
in the NYRRC club race series, gathering information/submitting
articles for our award winning newsletter, and always representing
Taconic as the great running club we are.
If you have any questions please call me at work 592-
3 0 0 5 o r a t h o me 2 4 4 - 8 5 4 4 .
One last note, we have negotiated an arrangement with
Silk Screen Technologies of New Jersey to supply us with TRRC
logo T-shirts, sweatshirts, shorts, and other accessories. Look for
a mail order ad in a future newsletter. This is a new and exciting
venture, for us so let's support it. We are also trying to book a Beer
Brewing Week-end at Club Get Away in Connecticut in July, so
look for more info ne.xt month.
See ya on the roads and HAPPY FEET.

A Balmy Freezer 5K
By Geny Radlauer
On February 2. 1997. many people awoke amazed and
confused. The ground was bare - with nar>' a white patch of winter
decor. Demand for oil. gas and electric heat for homes would be
markedly reduced. Winterwear would stay in the closet. Many
thought the clocks had been moved ahead.. .about 2 months ahead!
Even Puxalawney Phil, who would make his annual ground hog
appearance, thought he had overslept on this day on which The
Taconic Road Runners Club yearly inaugural event, the Freezer
Five 5000 meter run would take place. Race time teinperature
would hit a balmy 46"F. with little or no wind. It was a mild
embarrassment, calling this gathering a "Freezer Five" race.
Instead of those silly long sleeve shirts, we should have been
selling singlets showing a penguin lying on a lounge chair with a
pina colada. getting some sun!
Apparently. man\ people adapted well to this respite Irom
winter. (We've had this respite for 3 months.) One-hundred-
twenty-ve runners would participaie in this gala event. Led bs
Emmy Stocker and Phil Richie, the female and male champions
respectively, many participants demonstrated the effects of diligent
winter training. Most of all. everyone involved seemed to enjoy
themselves as they were reveling the prospects of warmer weather
ahead. As usual, the cast of volunteers and overseers made cenain
that this race went off without a hitch. Due to an unexpectedly
large tumout, several amusing scenarios took place. We had 100
numbers, which gured to cover both races. It soon became
e v i d e n t t h a t t h i s wo u l d n ' t c o v e r t h i s o n e r a c e . Ab o u t 2 5
participants would wear race numbers from the "Women's
Distance Festival." (We just developed a new way to promote
future races; Mow about that?!) The shirts were used up. Medal
and trophy distribution, which was planned to go 2 deep in each
age group due to an expected turnout of 50 people, had to be
amended to go 3 deep. All third place nishers; patience is a
vi rtue. Your medal s are "i n the mai l ." Too bad extra food i sn' t
coming with it. Supplies were promptly depleted and reports were
heard of mass starvation in FDR Park shortly after the race.
Runners are very adaptive people, though, and all took it in stride.
H o w n i c e !
Overall, it was a glorious day for a race. However, be
cautioned; Some cooler weather lies ahead. Enjoy the winter, if we
ever gel it. Once winter sets in (if it does), times will be slower to
cover any given distance. In a way. this is some comfort, for an
excuse for a poor run is ever present. Once the snow melts for the
last time, so also melts any alibi for a tortoise-like performance.
Keep on striding, my friends!

rst week of Daylight Savings Time. Doug Miller has been kind
enough to volunteer his time again. Doug will lead the workouts
which are designed to improve your running through a variety of
interval distances and intensities. These sessions are open to
anyone interested in gaining speed, stamina and tness. We are
hoping to see a large turnout this season.
There are usually three groups, so you can train with
others at your own pace. It is likely that we will get a large turnout,
so we will also need another volunteer to help with the timing of
the groups. Contact Doug, or just show up and have some fun!
"How to Destroy Your Health"
The following is an excerpt from Health Promotion Practitioner

Eat fast food regul arl y
D o n ' t e x e r c i s e
Work long hours and take few breaks
Eliminate fruits and vegetables from your diet
Keep anger and frustration to yourself
Eat lots of high-fat snacks at night while watching TV
Drink 4 or more alcoholic beverages every day

January didn't provide much snow, but the wind and
the frigid temperatures didn't stop Taconic from capturing three
rst place nishes out of four in the Westchester Road Runners'
Wi nter Seri es.
The Series consisted rst of a 5K. followed by a 5 miler
and then a I OK over a 4 week period at SUN Y Purchase. The
winners were determined by their total time in the three races,
and champions were crowned for the overall score and the
m a s t e r s s c o r e .
Greg Diamond, who won all three races, and Emmy
Stocker, who won two, were the overall winners. Gary Steinel
won the Masters division with a sweep as well. Other TRRC
members who ran all three races include: Dan Fritzsche, Bob
Davis, Jim Whalen, Ed McCarthy, Seth Denenberg (taking third
in the overall standings), and I.

Men' s Mas t er s
By Scott Abercrombie
1996 was another very successful year for our masters
teams, with victories in both the MAC and the NYRRC grand
Prix series, The 50 Mile 8 Man Ocean to Sound Relay on Long
Island, and the Road Runners Club of America Cross Country
Nationals. However, we are running a little lean right now. The
average age is over 45 (well over), with on-going defections to
our Veterans 50's team. A few of us (me, in particular) don't
exactly run with a full tank of gas anymore, either. Then again,
we still eld over 20 dedicated runners with some serious talent
below the age of 45, and few approaching 50 whose running has
been oblivious to the aging process. We also have more than
enough team spirit to ensure a very fruitful 1997. Now, let's
factor in all the open runners who turn 40 this year. In May
alone, Roy Altman, Greg Diamond and Justin Kelley become
masters runners. This process goes on all year, and before it's
over, we will have our largest and strongest team ever.
We will compete in both Grand Prix series, the Ocean
Team Update
to Sound Relay, the RRCA Cross Country Nationals, and the
lOK Nationals again this year. If the interest is there, we may
also send a team to the Lake Winnipesaukee Relay in New
Hampshire again, as well. That's about 20 team events! It's
impossible to get the best runners to every one of these events.
Average runners have made signicant contributions to our team
victories. This is particularly true in the NYRRC Grand Prix,
which has 13 races this year. So, if you achieve mid-age status
this year, and if you want to have some fun with it, then run with
us. Call me at (914) 245-9629. Every month, team members
are contacted by either Ken Filmanski, Joe Porcaro, Jeff Purdy,
Gary Steinel or me to see who is on board for the upcoming
races. That's a lot of time on the telephone, so over time, names
have been dropped from the roster because of lack of
participation. If you ran with us in the past, but fell by the
wayside, thanks to injury, illness, overtime, or whatever, the
reinstatement process is easy: Just call! 1997 will be an exciting
year.

TRRC's 50's Veterans Team Captures Tri-State Title Again
By Rich Nash, 50's Team Captain
Back to back wins in the NYRRC Grand Prix Series - that's a feat in itself, as our team literally ran to
victory 119 to 72 points over our nearest competitors. We started off strong and nished strong, thanks to
the dedication of people like Jack Brennan (all 12 races and NYRRC nominee for 50's Runner of the Year)
and many more. Again, we encountered a wee bit of rocky road along the path to victory.
The Northwind lOK and Snowake 4M brought us rst place victories, only to be followed by
second place nishes in the Brooklyn Half and Queens Half to the super strong Westside Runners. We were
back on track with the Prospect Park 5M and Lincoln Hall 5M (rst time ever a NYRRC Grand Prix Series
Race was held outside the 5 Boroughs of New York - thanks NYRRC!) only to have Millrose AA nipping at
our heels. The Club Team Championships in July would be our test. We were out in force, but to no avail
as we fell to second in this and third in the Hispanic Half-Marathon. Was defeat on the horizon? No way!!
Once again, our team spirit rose to the occasion, taking the Fred Lebow 5K and Norway 5K runs. Next up
saw the wild and crazy New York City Marathon! Through adversity and injury, we still managed to pull off
a solid fourth. (By the way, if you have any aspirations of running the 1997 New York City Marathon,
please contact Lee Saroken or me ASAP! Our nale of the year came with the Hot Chocolate lOM, and did
we ever need a cup of energy as we nished third. Exhausted, we took our weary bones home with a solidi
ed victorious season.
My eternal thanks and appreciation go to the 36 team members who gave their bodies and souls,
dedicating themselves for the team through injury, adversity, training, and setbacks. We are excellent and
gating stronger. Bring on the Nationals! Special thanks to the following members who competed in 3 or

Freezer 5M Has A Great Day!
By Katy D. Quinn
The Freezer 5's launch the TRRC race season each year
and, due to the unpredictable nature of February weather in New
York, bring with them many questions for the race directors and
the racers. Will the back trail be too covered with snow and ice to
use? Will there be new fallen snow that needs to be plowed? Will
there be any rewood available? Will the runners show up?
This year, the answers were good ones (unless you're one
of the folks that think Freezer 5's medio be freezing and icy!).
The back trail was too messy to use, but the weather was beautiful
for both races. There was no snow and very little ice to contend
with. Firewood was ample, and the eld of runners was bigger
than ever. Not only that, FAST runners showed up, and records
fell. Mike Slinsky clocked an impressive 25:08 on the 5M course
that this year included a trip from Parking Lot 1 to the "agpole,"
back through the inside loop and once more around the inner loop.
Gerry Radlauer and Barbara Brittan teamed up as race
directors to set up two fun races for over I GO entrants in each race,
and TRRC volunteers again turned out in ample numbers and
enthusiasm to assure successful events. The fans were as
enthusiastic in welcoming the last nishers as they were in
cheering the winners across the line, and smiles abounded. That's
what TRRC events are about.
TRRC Women' s Teams
Race Report-1997
By Deb Kenney
Our rst NYRRC race of the year was the Northwind
lOK which took place January 19th. At the start of the race, the
temperature was -9 degrees with the wind chill, and it was brutal.
You certainly wouldn't fault anyone for not wanting to run a race
on this day! However, Taconic women are tough. The following
hearty souls showed up and ran the race: Beth-Anne Cincotta
44:02, Debra Kenney 44:42, Nancy Young 47:28, Carol Hanson
48:36, and Joanne Bertram 57:08.
The Snowake 4M was held on February 22nd, and was
our second race of the season. If anyone had told me back at the
Northwind lOK that the temperature at the Snowake 4 Miler
would be 60 with a 96% humidity level, I would have thought they
were nuts.. .probably too much beer. But.. .that's exactly what the
temperature was. I have never seen Central Park so crowded with
runners, cyclists and roller-bladers. Approximately 2,000 plus
runners started the race, with about 1800 nishers. The women
runners were Barbara Brittan 25:25, Beth-Anne Cincotta 27:49,
Debra Kenney 27:50, Robin Maloney 28:52, Melanie Benvenue
29:02, Kate Glynn 29:31 (It was so great to have you back with us,
Kate!), Lauren Logan 32:48, Carolyn Subin 33:43 and Bridget
Porteus 39:28. Bridget is our newest runner. She is at the very
beginning of her running, with a low weekly mileage, but I asked
her at the last Taconic meeting if she would like to run the 4 miler
with us. Bridget said yes, and Bridget, I know it's tough running
your rst race (many of us probably remember our rst race
experience?!?) And I admire your courage! We all gathered at the
nish line, waiting for Bridget and gave her a typically loud rowdy
Taconic yell when she reached the nish line! I am always proud
of the Taconic women who participate in our races. They support
and root for each other!
Thanks to all the women who ran the January and
February races. If there are any women who would like to come
and join us, give any of the captains a call. We would love to
have you run with us.

Leonard Edelen, 59, A Runner
To Remember
This editor noted this obituary in the 2/23/97 New York Times and
found it of interest. Perhaps you will too. (As a South Dakotan, I
am especially proud to learn of the contribution of the residents
of Sioux Falls, SD!)
Excerpted from the New York Times. 2/23/97:
Leonard (Buddy Edelen Jr., the rst American marathoner
in nearly four decades to set a world record, died of cancer in
Tulsa, Okla., on Wednesday, Feb. 19, 1997. He was 59.
Edelen cut 48 seconds off the world record when he won
Britain's Polytechnic Marathon, covering the 26 miles 385 yards
in 2 hours 14 minutes 28 seconds on June 15,1963. It was the rst
marathon record by an American since Albert Michelsen ran
2:29:02 in 1925. Afterward, Edelen was called "America's great
hope" for a gold medal at the Summer Olympics in Tokyo in 1964.
But a sciatic nerve condition caused him severe back pains, and he
nished sixth. Edelen ran 13 more marathons, winning 7. He
stopped competing at age 28.
In the four years leading up to the 1964 Olympics, Edelen
made $120 a month teaching in a private school in England and
lived in a one-room apartment with no telephone and no
refrigerator. When he lacked the $650 needed to go to the United
States for the 1964 Olympic trials, youngsters in a Y.M.C.A. in
Sioux Falls, S.D. - the city where Edelen spent part of his
childhood - raised the money through car washes, dances,
basketball games and donations.
"1 was about 13 years too early," he said, reecting on the
money that became available to top marathoners. Edelen's training
habits also stood out in contrast with the austere regimens used by
other runners. He drank beer nightly and smoked a cigarette
occasionally, although he logged 130 miles a week. "Think how
good 1 might be if 1 didn't have these vices, he once mused.
As his running career was winding down, Edelen earned a
master's degree in psychology at Adams State College in Alamosa,
Colo., and went on to teach psychology at the school. He later
worked as a promotions coordinator for Pepsi-Cola Bottling
Company in Tulsa and for the state Department of Human
Ser vi ces.
He is survived by his wife, Glenda; a son. Brent; four
stepchildren, Yvonne Allen, Cindy Marsh, Teresa Waszut and
Claudia Brashears, and 10 grandchildren.
