Mass killing of the Tutsi and Hutu peoples.
Causes
The Hutus and Tutsis were seen as superior, so
jealousy and conflict arose.
Early on when Rwanda received independence in
1963 after many Tutsis were killed and
discriminated against.
A Civil War in 1990 in which resulted in a cease-
fire. Invaded the wishes of the United Nations.
President Habyarimans (Hutu) assassination in
1994 in which the Tutsi were blamed.
Important Figures
Edouard Karemera and Matthieu Ngirumpatse were pledged
guilty for the mass genocide, as they were members of the
ruling party at that time.
Ngirumpatse was was the chairman for Rwandas MRND,
and Karemera was his deputy.
King Kigeri V ruled the Tutsi until being exiled.
Gregoire Kayibanda president after independence, outsed
in military coup.
Juvenal Habyarimana leader of the military, later elected
president. Signs treaty with the Tutsis, later killed in a plane
accident alongside the Burundian president.
Important Details
Over 800,000 people were killed, most of which were Tutsi.
Ordinary people were attacked, the genocide spread across
the country.
It all began when Habyarimana and Burunis plane was
attacked, which left no survivors. To this day, no one knows
who truly is responsible.
Officials and radio stations tied to the government controlled
the nation. They gave orders to civilians to kill their
neighbors.
There were over 2 million who fled Rwanda, ending up in
refugee camps.
Effects
75% of the Tutsi population was murdered.
9% of the adult population now suffer from HIV.
As of 1997, the government was completely
controlled by the Tutsi.
International Criminal Tribunal was established.
The Rwandan Genocide is strange in the way it
happened. It was planned murder, as members of
the akazu who also took part in the government
controlled and ordered the entire thing. The police,
army, militias, and even civilians took part in the
inhumane 100-day period. There was already prior
tension, as there was a Rwandan Civil War being
fought. The strive for power and control is what
truly sparked the discrimination against the Tutsi.
Useful Information
One of the quickest genocides to spread. The speed
impacted the way people remember it.
There was a close relationship between the victims and the
killers.
The United States didnt get involve, and fail to recognize the
murders.
Occurred after the French left Rwanda. While there, the
French kept order. After they left, the Hutus took charge.
