Early on when Rwanda received independence in 1963 after many Tutsis were killed and discriminated against. A Civil War in 1990 in which resulted in a cease- fire. Invaded the wishes of the United Nations. President Habyarimans (Hutu) assassination in 1994 in which the Tutsi were blamed. Important Figures Edouard Karemera and Matthieu Ngirumpatse were pledged guilty for the mass genocide, as they were members of the ruling party at that time. Ngirumpatse was was the chairman for Rwandas MRND, and Karemera was his deputy. King Kigeri V ruled the Tutsi until being exiled. Gregoire Kayibanda president after independence, outsed in military coup. Juvenal Habyarimana leader of the military, later elected president. Signs treaty with the Tutsis, later killed in a plane accident alongside the Burundian president. Important Details Over 800,000 people were killed, most of which were Tutsi. Ordinary people were attacked, the genocide spread across the country. It all began when Habyarimana and Burunis plane was attacked, which left no survivors. To this day, no one knows who truly is responsible. Officials and radio stations tied to the government controlled the nation. They gave orders to civilians to kill their neighbors. There were over 2 million who fled Rwanda, ending up in refugee camps. Effects 75% of the Tutsi population was murdered. 9% of the adult population now suffer from HIV. As of 1997, the government was completely controlled by the Tutsi. International Criminal Tribunal was established. The Rwandan Genocide is strange in the way it happened. It was planned murder, as members of the akazu who also took part in the government controlled and ordered the entire thing. The police, army, militias, and even civilians took part in the inhumane 100-day period. There was already prior tension, as there was a Rwandan Civil War being fought. The strive for power and control is what truly sparked the discrimination against the Tutsi. Useful Information One of the quickest genocides to spread. The speed impacted the way people remember it. There was a close relationship between the victims and the killers. The United States didnt get involve, and fail to recognize the murders. Occurred after the French left Rwanda. While there, the French kept order. After they left, the Hutus took charge.
