TEACHING ENGLISH SPEAKING THROUGH STORYTELLING
TO GRADE 3 STUDENTS IN PERMAI ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Teaching speaking is important in the early phase of childrens age !t teaching
ho" to speak English in national schools in #ndonesia has een diffic!lt eca!se
English is not the mother tong!e of the st!dents$ #n this research% the storytelling
method is !sed in order to find o!t if it can help teachers to teach speaking to
yo!ng children and if the st!dents enefit from the method$
This st!dy !ses &!antitati'e research method "ith one gro!p pre(test post(
test design that "as incl!ded in &!asi e)perimental design$ The s!*ects of this
st!dy "ere ten st!dents (fi'e "ith high le'el of English and fi'e "ith lo" le'el of
English) of class +, in Permai Elementary -chool$ This st!dy "as cond!cted for
. ho!rs sessions /40 min!tes% in ,pril and early 0ay 1021$ 3ata collection "as
performed y pre(test% post(test% recordings and scripts of the st!dents speaking$
The data "ere processed and analy4ed &!antitati'ely and &!alitati'ely$
The res!lt sho"ed that the implementation of the storytelling method
de'eloped st!dents 'oca!lary mastery and speaking performance$ ,ll the
st!dents "ith different English le'els and different gender gained positi'e
o!tcome from this method$

Mengajar berbicara adalah hal yang sangat penting dalam fase awal dari
kehidupan anak-anak tetapi mengajarkan bagaimana berbicara dalam bahasa
Inggris di sekolah- sekolah nasional di Indonesia merupakan hal yang tidak
mudah karena bahasa Inggris bukanlah merupakan bahasa ibu dari para siswa.
Dalam penelitian ini, metode bercerita digunakan untuk mencari tahu apakah
metode ini dapat membantu para guru untuk mengajar berbicara anak pada usia
dini dan jika para siswa juga memperoleh keuntungan dari metode ini.
Penelitian ini menggunakan metode penelitian kuantitatif dengan desain
satu kelompok pre-test pos-ttest yang diikutsertakan dalam penelitian
eksperimental. Subjek penelitian ini adalah sepuluh siswa lima dari le!el
bahasa Inggris tertinggi dan lima dari le!el bahasa Inggris terendah" dari kelas
#$ di Sekolah Dasar Permai. Penelitian ini dilakukan dalam delapan jam
pelajaran %&' menit dari bulan $pril sampai awal bulan Mei (')(.
Pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan menggunakan pre-test, post-test, hasil
rekaman, dan skrip dari hasil rekaman berbicara para siswa. Data diproses dan
dianalisa secara kuantitatif dan kualitatif.
*asil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa penerapan metode bercerita
meningkatkan kemampuan para siswa dalam penguasaan kosakata dan
kemampuan berbicara. Semua siswa dengan le!el bahasa Inggris dan gender
yang berbeda memperoleh hasil positif dari metode ini.
