Doctors Corner
Laparoscopic surgery, also known as Keyhole
surgery refers to surgery or an operation
performed without opening one up. Body
spaces or cavities are accessed through
little holes to get the slender instruments
used to operate and the miniature cameras
that capture and relay the images on a flat
screen in.
Advantages are:
Resultant scars are very small and
cosmetically acceptable.
The pain after surgery is much less.
Hospital stay is reduced by a whole lot
80-90%. In addition
Likelihood of developing complications is
slimmer In short, if you must have surgery
its the logical or preferred choice.
Laparoscopic procedures are carried out for
the following conditions or and more;
Gallstones and diseased gall bladders
Sick appendices
Fibroids
Blocked fallopian tubes
Ovarian cysts
Troublesome adhesions (scars inside the
abdomen due to previous surgery)
Tubal ligation (sterilization)
Diagnosis and staging for some cancers
Removal of nasal polyps or growths and
cleaning up troublesome sinuses etc.
At IHK, minimally invasive surgery was
started in 2006 with a few hundred
procedures being done so far.

Your Story
Staff and medication rivaled any Western
hospitals I have been to. I was admitted to
IHK on March 24th after being diagnosed
with a subdural heamatoma. I had surgery
the following day and was kept in ICU
overnight before being discharged back to
the ward (IPD2) were the team took good
care of me. I am speechless at the level of
excellence and service delivery at IHK. I
would in particular like to thank the
following; Dr Joel Kiryabwire
(Neurosurgeon), nurses Damalie and Mark
on IPD2 and Dr Buza (IPD2)
I am speechless at the level of excellence
and service delivery at IHK.
James Ndiwalana
Ill always be grateful for the amazing
hospital staff at Dr. Clarkes hospital in
Uganda. Between my daughter and I, we
were there at least 10 times in our 3 years
and the staff, doctors, and low cost
medication rivaled any Western hospitals
Ive been to. In fact, the 2nd BEST hospital
Ive been to is in Kenya! Crazy how
developed countries cant do what gets
done in East Africa at the same price
Aura Greig
I wanted to take a moment to say thank
you for the incredible care my wife and
daughter experienced at IHK during their
recent visit to Uganda. It was thought that
my daughter had contracted malaria after
going to a community clinic, but after
coming to IHK, a bacterial infection was
confirmed. The care and attention to detail
that went into a thorough differential
diagnosis was greatly appreciated, and
made them feel like it was some of the best
care they had ever experienced anywhere
in the world. Thank you also for the
excellent care you have provided for our
Ugandan brother Geofrey and his family, as
well as Shaleems father Paul. I hope to
see Geofreys next child born at IHK next
month.Please pass on our appreciation
to your staff.
