As you are aware we are trying to revitalize our volunteer effort. Our goal is to have every club member volunteer in some capacity during the year.
In order to accomplish this we are putting together a list of all the club volunteers and their interests. This list will be available to race directors.
We will consider placing it on the world wide web. One event per year is not much. We need you! Please ll out the coupon below.

Any one who ran Harold's Half and did NOT receive a T-shirt (either a Harold or a Sybil), please let me know. I
have new supply of Harold shirts. A number of people are already on my list. I will have the shirts with me at
Downing Park for the next several Wednesday nights, and certainly at the September monthly meeting. Please
come and claim them, thanks.
I have been nagged to nish this column so this issue of TRL can been completed and sent off to the printer, but
I'm suffering from writer's block. To prod the muse I decided to go back and look at columns from prior newslet
t e r s .
Ten years ago: from the September 1990 president's column; John Hallinan reminded everyone about signing
up for the Dinner Dance to be held "aboard the good ship Commander" (but with no mention of Bill Khron), John also requested that Dan
Caffery and Pete Meisler provide elevation charts before either of them lead us on scenic runs.
Twenty years ago: from the March 1980 issue: no president's column, but the following item appeared on page 1:
" New St ar t er ' s Pi s t ol s Pur c has ed"
Over the last two years the club has purchased two relatively expensive starters pistols; we have also had two donated. During those two
years we have had various combinations of malfunctions and loss of these devices. Our latest asco involved an expensive gun which was
donated to the club and serviced to insure trouble free use; in typical TRRC fashion the thing jammed and we wound up with our usual
''ready, set...go" start. Enough!
Well, we solved the problem. You've heard the old saw about carrying umbrellas and wearing rain coats to prevent rain. There is an old
obscure RRCA maxim concerning starters pistols. Without bothering about cumbersome background details the bottom line is this: Buy
something cheap and tacky enough and you'll have it forever....and the thing will work every time; and if it doesn't ...or if you lose it, who
cares because the thing was cheap and tacky and you didn't expect it to work anyway.
Theciub now owns three plastic cap guns at $1.59 each; they work great-never jam and are loud. If we lose one, we breakout the second;
if we lose or break that one, we fetch the third one; if we lose the third?... well, the thing was cheap and tacky...
Weli, we've come a long way in twenty years. We just purchased a trailer to haul all our stuff around in -1 hope it doesn't break or get lost
since it was neither cheap nor tacky, and we certainly couldn't alford to buy three of them, just in case.

David Mitzi and Connie Davis Win the 2000 Putnam
County Classic
Independence Day wouldn't be the
same without the Putnam County Clas
sic Road Race. This year's race had
almost 250 participants competing along
an eight-mile course around Mahopac.
The humid weather couldn't stop
David Mitzi from nishing rst among
the pack of runners with an incredible
time of43:54! For the women, Connie
Davis ran a strong race with a 51:34
nish. One of the highlights of this
year's race was watching 7 year old
Octavio Bemabo's captivating nish on
the Mahopac High School track as he
completed the eight mile race in

future Taconic star! Once again,
Taconic put on a great event which
couldn't have taken place without the
count l ess vol unt eer s. Fr ed and Chr i s
tine Reger, Race Directors, did a won
derful job of organizing this race with
months of hard work and preparations.
Fred, Christine, and the rest of the
Taconic volunteers should be congratu

tradition in Putnam County.

The following letter was received from Tom Church, a Taconic member
who relocated to New England;
H i Ta c o n i c s !
Greetings from Lynn, MA; home of Fluff (yes, the stuff that goes with
peanut butter) and the fast shoe making capitol of the world. I moved up
here last August to attend a well renowned massage school that I will be
nishing in January.
Prior to the move I was living in Queens for two years and managing the
Super Runners at the old relay start line. While in the city I was tending
to one injury after another which is the main reason I disappeared from
the race scene. The other is that I fell in love. Her name is Lucy
Nottingham and we are now married (June 2,2000). I wish 1 could have
invited everyone up for the wedding but we decided to go small. The
door is always open though for anyone in the area (Tina, could you put
this in the newsletter along with my address and phone numbers?)
I have some contact with Taconics up here, but not much. I ran into
Roger Gocking at an outrigger canoe race in Gloucester on the IS"* of
July. 21 miles with 5 foot swells and he was in a 1 person kayak.
Not much else is happening. The race scene is pretty big up here, but
most seem to be on weeknights (not conducive to a work life in retail).
We are going to do Beach to Beacon on August 5'''. 1 will have my
Taconic singlet on. What do I need to do to get a new one and a new tee?
Hurry up and renew me.
Miss all of you,
To m C h u r c h

A View From the Olympic Track and Field
Trials in Sacramento, CA
by Greg Diamond
For 10 glorious days of sellout crowds in Sacramento, California,
Track and Field enjoyed the spotlight. For athletes usually as anony
mous as your next door neighbor, the attention and adulation they
received for one exceptional performance after another, was more
than they could ever have expected. Rarely in this country do track
and eld stars work in the same kind of spotlight as baseball and
basketball stars here and track athletes in Europe. The same week
Tiger Woods and Lance Armstrong held the world's attention mak
ing sports history, over a thousand athletes put on a show in Sacra
mento those of us that were there will not soon forget.
Many Americans know Michael Johnson and Maurice Green, be
cause of the media's heightening of their rivalry and their world
records. But who knows Stacy Dragila? She set the world record in
the pole vault. Jeff Hartwig? He is the world's second best pole
vaulter who failed to make the team because he never cleared the
bar in the trials, much like another ballyhooed track athlete, Dan
O'Brien 8 years ago. O'Brien didn't compete this year because of
injury, but the decathlon was spectacular nonetheless due to the
personal best perfomiance of Tom Pappas.
Johnny Gray has been one of the world's best 800 meter runners for
the last 20 years and at age 40, was competing again. After the rst
lap in his race, which he led, he decided it was time to pass the torch.
He fell into last place and ran the last lap slowly. After crossing the
nish line, he ran a lap backwards to an emotional standing ovation,
saying goodbye to track. It was one of several tearful moments on
t he Sacr ament o t r ack.
Shot putter Adam Nelson, unknown to most of us, sitting in fourth
place behind C.J. Hunter, husband of Marion Jones and world cham
pion, was taking his last of six attempts. He threw himself into rst
place and onto the Olympic team with a throw ve feet further than
his previous best. He then did a dance of elation only a shot putter
could do, throwing his huge body around the grass, bouncing off his
excited competitors and embracing them with bear hugs. They
seemed as happy as he was, and he just beat them.
Each day was packed with events. The third started with eld events,
four simultaneously. Just to our left was the women's discus prelimi
nary. Some of the women seemed larger than your 'typical' track
athlete, while others looked like the athletes they all are. The men's
pole vault, also to the left, ended with a jump-off to decide the third
vaulter to be on the team. They lowered the height and each of three
tied for third jumped, only one making it and thus making the team.
Then there was another jump-off for the alternate position. The
women's long jump across the track was very stirring. Jackie Joyner
Kersee was trying for her fourth Olympic Team. Favorite Marlon Jones,
recently criticized for her jumping technique came within one jump,
after two faults, of not making the long jump team. In the end, she
won the jump, her second victory so far. The women's high jump, to
the right, also required a jump off between the two best American
jumpers for the third spot, having been beaten by two athletes who
came to these trials with a dream surprisingly fullled that day.
Next i t was ti me for the track. The men' s and women' s 1500 meter
nals were stirring with two Stanford men stealing the show, running
2 seconds faster than either ever had and nishing rst and third.
Regina Jacobs and Suzy Favor-Hamilton, ran 58 seconds for the
last quarter to nish rst and second easily. Legally blind Maria Runyan
nished third. The men's 400 meter race was anticlimactic as Michael
Johnson held back, saving himself for the highly hyped and also
anticlimactic 200 meter race against Maurice Green later in the week,
and still won easily. Johnson is the most protected person here,
requiring 4 policemen and several other bodyguards to get from the
nish line to the press tent. No other athlete is so protected.
What television has done to track and eld might never be repaired.
Television portrays a feeling that the actual competition takes about
ten seconds and that viewers in the stands have fteen minutes to
sit and are bored while they wait for another event. In fact, the
action can be so plentiful, that it is easy to miss. With every throw,
jump or vault, a personal best or American Record could be set. In
every heat and qualifying round, contestants have the chance to
move to the next round or be eliminated and join us in the stands to
watch. There is no other place in sport to watch so many athletes at
the top of their eld put themselves on the line in front of a stadium
packed with fans. No helmets, no teammates, no place to hide. The
pain of watching a runner fall back from the main pack in a 1500
meter race, trying as hard as they can while failure (as measured
by making the Olympic team) is a foregone conclusion, is palpable.
The joy of that shot putter could be felt by everyone.
Americans may be rediscovering Track and Field. No Olympic Tri
als was ever better attended. For the rst time in track history, the
World Championships of Track and Field will be held in North
America next August in Edmonton, Canada. Amidst the beauty of
Alberta, the world's best runners, jumpers and throwers will vie for
gold, silver and bronze. And you can be there.

So, Does Age matter?
Not if you are the senior citizen of running-
John A. Kelley!
One of the twentieth centuries most beloved runners, John A. "The
Elder' Keiley made his Boston Marathon debut in 1928. Kelley,
who won the race in 1935 (see picture below-2:32:07) and again in
1945, owns the record for most Boston Marathons started (61) and
nished (58). His nal race came in 1992 at the age of 84. John
Adelbert Keliey placed second seven times. He raced in two Olym
pic marathons (Berlin, 1936 and London. 1948), and had been a
member of the war-canceled "mythical team" of 1940. His
marathoning life spanned two thirds of the Boston Marathon's rst
cent ur y.
He can be found every year in the lead car at the Falmouth Road
Race and is as nice as this picture seems to show. Prior to this
Falmouth, he serenaded several young woman (and the Young
woman in the picture with him) at a hotel near the start of the race.
At 93 years old, this elder statesman wasn't talking about his run
ning past, but encouraging and instructing others around him to a
bet t er f ut ure.

For the new Millenium, we couldn't have huped for more favorable racing weather
conditions at our annual Mother's Day 5k Race. The temperature was just shy of 60
degrees, and 121 women nished the course.
Leading the race, Tara Maguire llnished in 19:53. Alyssa Lifrieri plated second
with a time of 20:00. The rst place Master's spot and third place overall went to
Emmy Stocker who ran 20:06. On our Taconic website you may see your picture!
This year, we were fortunate to be sponsored by Jacob's Creek and Bedford Hills
Women For Fitness. Thanks to the generosity of our sponsors, many runners re

passes.
My tlrsi experience as race director for the

Adrienne Thompson Gets It Right (Almost)
Just when you thought an incredible record was safe, it goes by the wayside. In the
second annual Harold Wallach Memorial Half Marathon, Adrienne Thompson came
within 3 seconds of accurately predicting her time (only .04 percent ofO for a half
marathon in 2:11:27. Last year, Ed McLaughlin ran within .11 percent of his pre
diction. It seems impossible that next year someone will run under the new record.
In second place, surviving a fall on the aqueduct was Leo Gormley, just. 13 percent
off (8 seconds over 1:39:51). Fourteen of the 53 runners were within 2 percent of
their prediction. Twenty of the 53 runners ran over there predicted time with 9 of
t he r s t 11 under .
The two winners receive $400 in airfare to a destination on the United States. The
next four men and women each won substantial gift certicates to a running store.
All of this donated by Stacy Wallach who decided last year to host a race in his
father's memory. Stacy is very fond of the pump house runs. A race that could be
won by anyone, regardless of speed, run on the usual Saturday pump house run
course, would be a winner. And he was right. Although just 53 runners came, it
seems as if this is becoming a favorite of many of them.
Ironically, the Saturday morning runs will now move to the Croton Gorge Park
due to construction on the pump house bridge. Parking has become tight due to
rocks in our lot and we were lucky to have a race there this

The Second Annual Har ol d Wal l ach Hal f
by Lucia Chapman
Most of us love to race. The adrenaline rush and the sense of accomplishment (or
frustration) can't be matched on our usual training runs. But in a race, how often
do we get to run and talk with good friends? Dawdle at water stops without guilt?
Cross the nish line four-abreast with the competition? Have our picture snapped
on the way? Wn prize money? (OK, some of you do.) Some of us even got to do
a dress rehearsal for Mudders and Grunters, with a few head-rst slides and some
TLC from fellow runners and volunteers at the water stops.
At the Second Annual (and my rst) Harold Wallach Memorial Half Marathon, all
of that was possible. Generously sponsored by Stacy Wallach, the Harold Wallach
Memorial combines the best of a race and our Saturday long runs. Fifty three
Taconic members turned out for a race in which watches were banned and the
object was to come in as close to your predicted time as possible. It meant a lot to
see Stacy's obvious excitement at this event honoring his father. The rain held off
all morning, and we had bagels and awards after the race. I went home with a gift
certicate for a new pair of running shoes for coming in second-closest among the
women, and the conviction that I could narrow that margin below 1:26 next year. It
couldn't have been just luck, could it?

WOMEN' S OPEN TEAM UPDATE
by Mari a Cal i donna
For this past year, Td like to thank all the women wlio have run any races in either or
both series -hang in there!! The Taconic Women's Open Team has not been compet
ing consistently due to members moving (good luck to Freda Clark!), pregnan
cies, and fewer particpants. The good news is that (his past spring and summer
we've recruited some new and old members for racing this coming season and
year. Welcome to: Connie Davis, Maryanne Germain, Heather Case, Kristen
Colsey, Mary NatelL and anyone else who plans on joining us!
We're hoping to start olT our new season with a strong show at the Club Team
Championship. It's my hope that we can rally a team for the remainder of 2000. While
we will not score signicantly for the year 2()(X) in Club Council, we do have a chance
of scoring well in the MAC series. For the coming year in the Club Council series, we
will be competitive with top teams.
Please keep in mind that on Wednesday evenings at 6; 15 Doug Miller hosts our track
series at Yorktown High School. Runners meet at the adjacent Downing Park for
parking and wann- up before the speed sessions. Taconic runners also meet at the
pumphouse on route 129 for longer runs on Saturday mornings at 7:30. If you
are interested in either of these regular events, don't hesitate to call me al

TRRC Vet's Win Club Team Championships by 4 Points
By Rich Nash
The competition was keen and Taconic pulled through for the victory against
Central Park with Greater New York taking third. Joe Porcaro (29:29) took
rst for us with Scott Abercrombie (30:22) and Bob Hermesch (30:32) hot on
his trail for second and third in one of the fastest 5 milers in America as the
average pace is under 7:00 per runner per mile. As much as their superior
efforts put TRRC in a position for victory, they needed much more to solidify
the victory. Central Park showed up with an all star team with Austin Brown
nationally ranked (28:00). Robert Francis(30.24), last year's runner of the
year, and Sidney Howard (32:06). 61 years old and an awesome runner.
What did it take to overcome this great group? Our team's strength! We had tremen
dous panicipation from TRRC ntembers such as Tony Galfano who placed 4th for us
(30:06). Rounding out the team was: Jack Brcnnan 5th (31:15), Howie Bashant 6th
(31:28), Art Weisberg 7th (31:56), Leo Gonnley 8th (32:37), DaveO'Toole (33:58). Ed
McCarthy (34:34). Ray Marrero (34:57), Gary Struve (35:39). Rich Nash (35:48), Ed
McLaughlin (38:43), Mike McCormick (39:43). Rudy Einhom (39:35), and Josh Knight
(40:21). If any of our lop nishers didn't show up or run as well as they did. TRRC
Vet's would have either tied or lost according to the standard method of cross coun
try scoring. The four places between fourth and seventh pushed Central Park's
third place runner back to the 278th and 579th position total overall (see
resul ts bel ow).

2000 Club Team Champtionships
By Debra Kenney
On August 19'^, the Taconics traveled south to Central Park to compete in
the Club Team Championships. The Club Team Championship is a race for
members of the various clubs in the metropolitan area. The winning teams
earn bragging rights for the year!
We (TRRC) have traditionally held a picnic in Central Park after the race
featuring good food and. of course, drink. This year the food was the best
ever thanks to Cathy Groneman!!! I would like to reiterate that our teams
are made up of nuiners of all ages and abilities! The TRRC teams have done
well over the years, but the important aspect of our teams is the friendship
we share and the support we offer each other. Come run with us!
