SUMMARY
The Indian Power Sector is growing at an accelerated pace. Peak demand is expected to be more than
157,000 M b! "01" which necessitates installed capacit! o# abo$t "10,000 M. %$rther, to meet the
growth rate o# Indian econom!, installed capacit! o# power generation shall be abo$t &00,000 M b!
"0"5. To keep pace with generation, transmission s!stem needs to be strengthened #or power trans#er #rom
generating stations to the load centres. 'onsidering the serio$s di##ic$lt! o# a(ailabilit! o# )ight o# a!
*)+,, it is considered pr$dent to adopt 1"00k- .' as next transmission (oltage le(el in the co$ntr! #or
trans#er o# b$lk power. To de(elop 1"00k- .' technolog! indigeno$sl!, a 1"00k- test station is being
established at /ina, Madh!a Pradesh in central part o# India in association with "5 Indian man$#act$rers.
In this pro0ect, P+1)2)I3 shall pro(ide the plat#orm s$ch as .' network connection, transmission
lines, testing #acilities and other in#rastr$ct$res at /ina s$bstations and 14$ipment Man$#act$res shall
install their 1"00k- 14$ipments #or #ield testing and trial. /ased on the #ield testing and experience
gained on the per#ormance o# 1"00k- e4$ipments, technical parameters shall be #ine t$ned #or 1"00k-
.' transmission s!stem. The test station shall consist o# " nos. ba!s o# 1"00k-, " sets o# 1"00k-
trans#ormers *1000M-. each /ank, and one single circ$it 5 one do$ble circ$it 1"00k- Transmission
6ines *abo$t 1 km each,.
In this paper, the details o# establishment o# test station are disc$ssed and (ario$s st$dies cond$cted #or
optimi7ation o# air clearances, corona, etc. are also described. Ins$lation 'o8ordination was the most
critical #or designing the 1"00k- S!stem #rom the point o# (iew o# lightning imp$lse withstand (oltage
and switching imp$lse withstand (oltage le(els. The necessar! protecti(e margins as per I1'8&0071815"
ha(e been maintained b! special design o# #o$r *9, col$mn s$rge arrester #or meeting high discharge
capabilit! o# 55M:. The rated (oltage o# s$rge arrester is ;50k- and 6ightning Imp$lse Protecti(e 6e(el
*6IP6, and Switching Imp$lse Protecti(e 6e(el *SIP6, as 1700k- *at "0k., and 1500 k- *at " k.,
respecti(el!. The speci#ications and c$rrent stat$s o# de(elopment o# (ario$s ma0or 1"00k- e4$ipments
like Trans#ormers, 'irc$it /reakers, S$rge arresters, 'apaciti(e -oltage Trans#ormer, 3is8connectors and
Transmission lines are detailed in this paper.

1.0 INTRODUCTION
In India, ma0or primar! energ! reso$rces, i.e., coal and h!dro potential, are concentrated in #ew pockets.
%or example, coal deposit is con#ined to 1astern part, while h!dro potential is located in <orth8eastern and
$pper parts o# <orthern )egion. There#ore, to ens$re optimal $tili7ation o# reso$rces, it re4$ires
de(elopment o# large si7ed reso$rce based generating stations and trans#er o# b$lk power to the #ar8o##
load centres thro$gh long distance transmission network. -ario$s iss$es like )ight8o#8a! *)+, and
social aspects etc. are posing ma0or challenges #or the de(elopment o# e##icient transmission s!stem. To
address abo(e aspects, it has been considered pr$dent to adopt power transmission at 1"00 k- .' and
=;00 k- >-3' le(els to ha(e high intensit! power trans#er per metre o# )+. P+1)2)I3 is alread!
operating h!brid 1>- .' and >-3' s!stems in their <ational 2rid which has pro(ed an e##ecti(e tool
#or e##icient network operation and management.
Since limited experience is a(ailable in the world on 1"00 k- .', it was decided to establish a 1"00 k-
Test Station at /ina, Madh!a Pradesh in the central part o# India. The test station shall consist o# " nos.
ba!s o# 1"00 k-, " sets o# 1"00 k- trans#ormers *1000 M-. each /ank, and one single circ$it 1"00k-
Transmission 6ine 5 one do$ble circ$it 1"00 k- Transmission 6ine * abo$t 1 km each,. The experience
gained on (ario$s 1"00k- e4$ipments shall help in #ine t$ning the technical parameters #or 1"00 k-
transmission pro0ects which are expected b! "01?@19. The detailed #ield testing shall be taken $p #or
(eri#ication o# the per#ormance o# (ario$s e4$ipments.

transmission line with single8line8to8gro$nd #a$lt #ollowed b! three phase interr$ption at #ar end onl!. In
the st$dies di##erent so$rce strengths along with &0G reacti(e compensation were considered. The res$lts
are presented in Table89 belowA

ma! also be considered necessar!.
%or comp$ting discharge capabilit! o# S$rge arresters, single line to gro$nd #a$lt was considered #or a
950km long line. In single phase to gro$nd #a$lt, the health! phase (oltage shall temporaril! increase and
S$rge .rresters shall be o(erstressed. The single phase tripping #ollowed b! three phase tripping a#ter
dead time o# abo$t 1000 ms was considered as indicated in %ig$re8III.

distrib$tion on the ins$lator string and long term st$dies on test line #or meas$rement o# .<, )I- 5
(oltage gradient meas$rement at gro$nd le(el.
%.1 Cr0a Ca1e S"$8-e#
The test was carried o$t in a 'orona cage at K>- test lab at 'entral Power )esearch Instit$te *')PI,,
>!derabad. The si7e o# the cage was &.1 m *>, x &.1 m *, x "1 m *6,. The corona cage consists o# three
sections, ins$lated central section o# length 1; m and two end sections each o# length 1.5m, located on
either side o# the central section. 1ight /ersimis .'S) *)adi$s 17.5 mm, b$ndle cond$ctor was str$ng
between two towers s$ch that the b$ndle was at the centre along the length o# the cage. /oth the ends o#
the b$ndle was connected to the end #ittings, corona shields and ins$lator strings.
S$itable no77les were pro(ided, at the top o# the cage, along the axis o# the cage to sim$late hea(! rain.
Three b$ndle con#ig$rations, with di##erent s$b cond$ctor spacing o# ?50 mm, 950mm and 550 mm were
$sed #or the meas$rements. The meas$rements were made $nder two precipitation rates (i7 57 mm@hr and
;5 mm@hr. Meas$rements o# 'orona Inception -oltage, 'orona loss, .< 5 )I- were made. /ased on
these meas$rements, cond$ctor s$r#ace (oltage gradients *1c,, cond$ctor s$r#ace #actor *m, were
determined. The res$lts are tab$lated in Table L &.
