Commentary Note: Pressure and static stress effects may combine with wake frequency vibration to cause failure of thermowells. SAES-J -400, Sec.5.3.3 B15 For Flanged Thermowells, where the calculated U-length ends up being too short for good heat transfer, modifications to the thermowell design may be made such as: a) A thermowell collar or special flange weldolet may be used to tightly hold the thermowell to the flange near the pipe wall, thus effectively reducing the calculation U-length, or; b) External dimensions such as root and tip diameter may be increased to lower the wake frequency and increase the resonant frequency. C2 Tag number correct Schedule Q, Att. IV, Sec.6.1. C3 Checking thermocouples or secondary standards should be homogeneous and uncontaminated. Any new thermocouple may be used, but it should be checked against a primary standard and tagged with its deviation from the standard curve. If a user does not have the equipment and technique for doing this, calibrated and tagged thermocouples are available. The National Bureau of Standards or other standardizing laboratories will furnish a report on the temperature-EMF characteristics of a submitted thermocouple..[ ISA-MC96.1-1982, Appendix D- Sec D3.4, Thermocouples- checking procedures] SAES-J -400, Sec. 3.2 C4 D.3.5 The accuracy of a checking thermocouple or secondary standard will become questionable after use. Noble metal thermocouples may normally be relied upon for a considerable period of use, provided that the checking temperatures have not been avoided. Base metal thermocouples used for checking purposes should be checked frequently. NOTE: Base metal couples should not be used for checking purposes below 480C (900F), if they are exposed between checks at temperatures above 760C (1400F).[ ISA-MC96.1-1982, Appendix D- Sec D3.4, Thermocouples- checking procedures] SAES-J -400, Sec. 3.2 Test Equipments Serial number: a) Smart Field Communicator (SFC) b) Millivolt generator c) Digital Multimeter d) Supply Unit e) 250 Ohms Resistor General Test Routines Page 3 of 11 PASS FAIL N/A RE-TEST DATE ITEM No. TEST RESULTS ACCEPTANCE CRITERIA REFERENCE PROJ ECT TITLE WBS / BI / J O NUMBER CONTRACTOR / SUBCONTRACTOR SAUDI ARAMCO ID/PID - 3/01/05 - REV 0 (Standards Cutoff - August 2004) SAUDI ARAMCO TEST REPORT SATR NUMBER DATE APPROVED QR NUMBER Temperature -Transmitter RTD type-Functional Check / Testing, and Certification SATR-J-6407 1-Oct-05 INST E1 F F1 Test Procedures E (a) Check Temperature transmitter against Data sheet. (b) Connect as per attached hook-up drawing. (c) Ensure that all polarities are correct and all connections are tight. Connect SFC, red wire to positive, black to negative. (d) Switch on power supply and SFC unit. (e) When the SFC is communicating , check that the ID of the transmitter is correct . (f) If the output of the Transmitter is analog format proceed with calibration. (g) If the output of the transmitter is digital format, change the format to analog using the SFC and as per the operations manual. (h) When the output has been changed to analog proceed with calibration. (i) Using T/C Tables, inject 0% input with millivolt generator and note that the output should be 4 mA, on the Multimeter. (j) Inject 25,50,75,& 100 % of the range to the Transmitter and note that the output should be 8mA,12mA,16mA and 20mA respectively. (k) Then proceed in the reverse direction from 100% to 0%. (l) If the error is greater than the allowable tolerance, inject 0% to the input of the transmitter and using the SFC and the operations manual, adjust transmitter until output reads 4 mA (m) Inject then 100% input and adjust accordingly the output should equal to 20 mA or 100%. (n) Repeat steps (l) and (m) until accuracy is with in required tolerances. (o) When accuracy is with in required tolerances repeat steps (i),(j) (k) and record the reading on the calibration certificte.
