This scholarly journal explained the history of trade in Mumbai, such as how the city
became a main trading port. The article discussed how the Portuguese saw the area as a
place of potential importance, but never saw the use of Mumbai as a natural harbor. The
second governor of Mumbai, Gerald Aungier, was the first to have the idea of making the
port a center of trade. This detailed account taught me how Mumbai became a center of
trade, which led to more outside influence from different countries, but also taught me
how outside influence led to Mumbai being a center of trade.

In this online article they talked about the different activities and events take place in the
bustling city of Mumbai. I learned about the different places to go to and the main tourist
attractions of the city. The Ganish Chathurti and the Dahi Handi are two festivals
someone would go to see when visiting Mumbai because of the art or even to see people
try and make the largest human pyramid. This general source taught me about the lots of
activities Mumbai holds and the different annual routines the people in the city learn to
love.

Dutt, Ashok K. "Mumbai." Grolier Multimedia Encyclopedia. Grolier Online
http://gme.grolier.com/article?assetid=0201185-0 (accessed May 7, 2014).
In this encyclopedia entry I learned a lot about the population in Mumbai and how the
city is growing rapidly. The population density is also increasing and the need for
housing is immense. This general source taught me about the slums in Mumbai and how
the government promised people living in slums homes if they could prove they had lived
in the city since 1995. Another interesting fact I learned from this article is Mumbai is
predicted to be the largest metropolitan area by 2020. This allowed me to see how much
the city of Mumbai is growing and developing.

This Encyclopedia entry explains how the city is involved with trade and where the
factories are located. The source also talks about where the main part of the city is
located. More than 15 million people live in the Greater Mumbai, which is a group of
islands, including Mumbai Island. This general source helps me have a better view of
how the city receives materials from outside countries. The port of Mumbai is how India
receives resources. I also learned more about where the factories and slums are located in
Mumbai.

From talking about the geography of Mumbai to learning about the government, this
encyclopedia entry has it all. Another topic this article covered was the main reason for
the huge growth in population. Surprisingly, the birth rate is low in Mumbai. The main
cause of growth is the need for jobs and the migration of people from different places.
Transportation was also a key topic in the source, which talked about train system
connected all throughout India. This general source covered all the key topics I would
need to know about the city of Mumbai. This source had lots of information I was unable
to find anywhere else.

consider themselves Zoroastrians, Muslims, Christians, and a smaller portion is Jews,
Jains, Buddhists and Sikhs. This detailed account taught me specifically about each
religion and helped me understand the different religions people practice in the city.

The history of Mumbai was well explained in this encyclopedia entry. I learned about
how Mumbai got the name and how the city used to be controlled. This source also
taught me some of the geography of the city and how the land was used for trade in the
past. In 1857, after the First War of Indian Independence, Mumbai was controlled under
the crown because the East India Company was accused of mismanagement. This
detailed source of the history of Mumbai went into detail about the city in the past. Other
sources were broader but this article was able to give more specific ideas of the citys
history.

population is growing in the city. In 1860 Mumbai produced lots of raw cotton because
of the demand for the resource during the US Civil War. This allowed for more outside
influence and trade for Mumbai. This general source helped me to see how the city has
