post ul at ed equat i ons of mot i on in t er ms of generalized stresses and body forces,

a general t ype of vi r t ual wor k t heor em and showed t hat i t was equi val ent t o
t hei r equat i ons of mot i on and surface conditions. I n t he present paper we use,
essentially, t he same defi ni t i ons of generalized body and surface forces and
stresses as t hose of TRUESDELL & TOUPIN, but a new condi t i on is i mposed on
our defi ni t i on of general i zed di spl acement and vel oci t y. We fi nd t ha t t he equa-
t i ons of mot i on and surface condi t i ons gi ven by TRUESDELL & TOUPIN are not
necessarily always satisfied. Sufficient condi t i ons under which t hese equat i ons
are val i d are discussed in sect i on 16. The same condi t i ons are t hen sufficient
for t he val i di t y of t he vi r t ual work equat i on.
Ki nemat i cs of or di nar y di spl acement and vel oci t y fields, now called mono-

di spl acement s and velocities is devel oped in sect i on 4. Multipolar body forces
are defi ned in sect i on 5, and mul t i pol ar surface forces and stresses in section 6.
Appr opr i at e expressions for ki net i c ener gy correspondi ng t o mul t i pol ar velocities

motions. An al t er nat i ve form for t hi s t heor y is gi ven in sect i on 9. A general
t heor y of el ast i ci t y for mul t i pol ar stresses and forces is devel oped in sect i on t 0,
wi t h an al t er nat i ve form in sect i on 1t .
Questions concerni ng const i t ut i ve equat i ons for mat eri al s which are not
elastic are consi dered in sections t 2, t 3. I n section t 4 we show t ha t t he elas-

* After completing t he present paper t he authors saw a report by R. D. MINDLIN
on "Microstructure in Linear El ast i ci t y" in which he develops a t heory which is
essentially t he same as t hat contained in w t 5 of our paper. MINDLIN has applied
his t heory to wave propagation and this application has not been studied here.
This paper has now been published in Arch. Rational Mech. Anal. 16, 5t - - 78 (t964).
