Unit details
CIVL4404 Structural Steel [PG]
6 points
Semester 1 (see Timetable)
This unit is designed to develop students' ability to apply fundamental knowledge and analysis method for structural steel design based on Australian Standards such as
AS1170 and AS4100. The topics covered include load calculations, design of tension member, design of compression member, design of bending member, design of
combined actions, design of connections and fatigue design, etc. Students who pass the unit have opportunities to work in areas such as analysis and design, construction
and management of steel structures.
This is an introduction to the design of structural elements through the principles of limit states design. The unit includes the assessment of loads and load combinations, the
assemblage of members to resist those loads and the design of individual members within an assemblage. Principal structural members are designed to resist tension,
compression, bending and combinations of tension and compression with bending. Connections are a combination of both welded and bolted systems. Fatigue design of
structural elements is also included.
The main objectives of the unit are to develop students' ability to analyse structural loads and structural members and apply the results of these analyses to practical steel
structure design.
Students are able to (1) discuss the design principles of structural steel (e.g. philosophy of limit state design, economy of steel constructions, benefits and limitations); (2)
communicate effectively in written technical reports; (3) demonstrate critical thinking and information literacy; (4) understand the basic theory behind structural steel design; (5)
simplify a practical steel structure in a design; (6) design structural elements; (7) perform an economical steel structure design; (8) use AS1170 for load calculations; (9)
design structural steel elements conforming to AS4100; and (10) explain fatigue load effect.
This comprises an assignment, a mid-semester examination and a final examination.
Supplementary assessment is not available in this unit except in the case of a bachelor's pass degree student who has obtained a mark of 45 to 49 and is currently enrolled in
this unit, and it is the only remaining unit that the student must pass in order to complete the course.

The availability of units in Semester 1, 2, etc. was correct at the time of going to press but may be subject to change.
All students are responsible for identifying when they need assistance to improve their academic learning, research, English language and numeracy skills; seeking out the services and resources
available to help them; and applying what they learn. Students are encouraged to register for free online support through GETSmart; to help themselves to the extensive range of resources on
UWA's STUDYSmarter website; and to participate in WRITESmart and (ma+hs)Smart drop-ins and workshops.
Books and other materials wherever listed may be subject to change. Book lists relating to 'Preliminary Reading', 'Recommended Reading' and 'Textbooks' are, in most cases, available at the
University Co-operative Bookshop (from early January) and appropriate administrative offices for students to consult. See the Bookshop Text List Search page at http://www.coop-
