BASIC SNIPER SURVIVAL GUIDE
By Martin Pegler, Author of thebestselling Sniper book 'Out of Nowhere' by Osprey
Publishing, Chief Weapons Curator of Leeds Armouries, UK and adviser on Sniper
Elite.
Tactical Employment
Snipersshould only begiven tasksthat arerelativeto their own specialist skills, they
should not beused asextrariflemen or infantry and must bebriefed at thehighest pos-
sible level of intelligence to ensure they are properly deployed. A skilled sniper can
achieveresultsthat far outweigh hissolitary status, such asthekilling of high-ranking
enemy officers or counter-sniper work and these abilities make him one of the most
dangerousspecialiststo encounter.
Insertion
In an urban role, thesniper hasgreater demandsplaced on him. Hewill rely to agreat
extent on having been properly briefed for hismission with all theavailablemapsand
photographsthat can beprovided by intelligence. If heisto beinserted into enemy ter-
ritory hemay well wear clothing similar enough to that of theenemy to pass, at adis-
tance, for oneof their own.
Environment and Position
In an urban environment snipersmay well carry abolt-action sniping rifle, silenced pis-
tol and dagger, aswell asamachinegun and grenadesto cover thepossibility of sud-
den close-rangecombat. Hischoiceof fireposition must ideally contain thefollowing
elements:
Good observation
Good concealment
Good field of fire
Protection from enemy fire
At least two routesof withdrawal
Camouflage and Concealment
A snipersfirst concern isof remaining unseen and utilizing ruined buildings, pilesof
rubble, or wrecked vehiclesasplacesof concealment. Combined with thecamouflage
offered by hisuniform, it isoften of theutmost importance. Any shooting position cho-
sen must beconsidered for cover offered aswell asoffering asaferouteof withdrawal.

STORY
April 1945: World War II is drawing to a close and the Russians and Germans are
caught in afuriousbattlefor Berlin. You taketheroleof an eliteAmerican sniper sent
into this chaotic situation by the OSS*. Your vitally important mission: to prevent
Stalin obtaining Germanysatom bomb research and V2 technology. Thisisthedawn
of thecold war.
In adesperatebid to prevent defeat, thecivilian population, including women, theold
and even children asyoung as10, havebeen conscripted into theGerman military, and
forced to fight on thefrontlinesat theoutskirtsof thecity. Thedepleted Luftwaffeis
powerlessto stop Allied air raidsat any timeof theday or night. Soviet troopsroam
the city, seeking revenge for the suffering and appalling death toll inflicted by the
Germansin their homeland (thebattleof Stalingrad having ended amere14 months
earlier). Against thisbackdrop, thecentreof thecity hasbeen left deserted, and thus
providestheideal ground for thecovert natureof thisOSSoperation.

Sniping Techniques
When sniping, hemust master anumber of different techniques. Thesewill include:
Proper operation of hisrifle
Mastering varied shooting positions
Trigger control and breathing
Accuracy: distancejudgement and wind allowance
Moving targets
Shooting Positions
Once the sniper is in a good concealed position, his next task is that of positioning
himself and hisrifleto maximisehisaccuracy. To achievethisthereareseveral typical
posturesadopted:
Prone - Thesteadiest position ispronewith thebody lying slightly to theleft of the
rifle, elbowscomfortably apart and theriflesupported by hands, shoulder and chin.
Kneeling - Theleft thigh ishorizontal to thebody, thefoot flat on theground while
theright leg istucked underneath, with thebuttock resting on theheel of theboot.
Unsupported - The unsupported standing position is difficult to master as it takes
somepracticeto remain steady. Thenon-firing arm can beused to rest against theleft
sideof thebody or on thebelt.
Empty Lung
Thebreath must becontrolled and steady and thebest timeto fireisduring respirato-
ry pause, when thelungsareabout two-thirdsempty and thesniper hasreached anat-
ural pausein hisbreathing cycle. Hisbody will berelaxed and hehassix to eight sec-
ondsbeforemuscleshakedueto lack of oxygen startsto occur.
Accuracy
Snipersaretrained to consistently hit their targetswith their first shot. A head shot at
300 metres and body shot at 600 metres were considered to be a good standard of
sniper shooting. However, therearehistorical accountsof elitesnipersof theWW2 era
who wereableto achievekillsat up to 1000 metres.
To achievetherequired high degreeof accuracy it isvital that thesniper isableto judge
distancesaccurately to + or 5 metresout to 800 metresor so, and aim abovehistar-
get to compensatefor thebulletsdrop dueto gravity. Thisisadifficult skill to master.
Arguably even moredifficult to master istheskill of gauging thewindsstrength and
itsdirection but thisisoften essential asthesefactorshaveconsiderableeffect on the
flight of abullet at typical sniping ranges.

Sniping Features
When ever possible use your sniper rifle to
engage enemies at a suitably long range so its
high accuracy givesyou theadvantageover ene-
miesusing much lessaccurateweaponssuch as
machinegunsor standard rifles.
When sniping, the effects of wind direction,
gravity as well as your posture and heart rate are realistically taken into account.
Accordingly you will haveto aim abovedistant targetsto allow for bullet drop dueto
gravity. (N.B. Any/all of thesesniping simulation featurescan bedisabled viathediffi-
culty select screen if required.)

Camouflage Indicator
How visibleyou areto enemieswhen camouflaged isindicated
by the icon and percentage shown by your camouflage indica-
tor. When you go into appropriateareassuch ason rubblepiles
or into shadows etc, your uniforms camouflage pattern will
makeit moredifficult for enemiesto seeyou, but becareful realistically thispercent-
ageisjust an indication and not aguarantee.
Wind Correction
Abovethesniper scopeisawind correction indicator. Thisshows
how many notchesoppositeto thewind direction you must aim
to hit your target. For example, aim two notches to the left to
compensate for the indicator showing the wind is blowing two
notchesto theright.
Heartbeat Monitor

isbased on thereal-lifesniper techniqueof exhaling then holding your breath to give

Correction for Gravity When Sniping
Usethehorizontal linesin thescope(often referred to by real snipersasnotches) asa
referenceto aim aspecific number of linesaboveadistant target, then fireand watch
wherethebullet impacts. Try aiming another notch higher and fireagain until you can
hit atarget asdesired.
(N.B. remember the number of notches you need to aim above will vary with how
zoomed in/out your scopeis.)
Relocating
Once you fire a few shots from a position, try to move unseen to another location
beforetheenemy can figureout whereyou areand mount acounter-attack. In sniper
jargon thisisknown asrelocating.
Lean Out From Cover to Observe or Snipe
When you arein thescopeor binocular viewsyou can lean out from acorner of wall or
barricade to observe enemy movements or to make a sniping shot with minimum
chanceof visual detection by theenemy.
Sniping Grenades Carried by the Enemy
Grenadesareoften carried by theenemy on their webbing and can besniped to deto-
natethem, thiswill giveyou adirect kill aswell asinflicting casualtieson any nearby
troops too (you can even snipe any grenades enemies are holding if you are good
enough).
Bullet Penetration of Bodies/Objects
Sniper riflebulletswill often beableto penetrate2 or 3 bodies, smaller treesand rust-
ed cars. If you you aregood enough you can kill 2 or even 3 enemieswith asingleshot.
Sound Masking
Very loud soundsin theenvironment likeartillery shellsair bursting can often beused
to mask thesound of your shotsfrom theenemy. Thistrick will often allow you to pick
off enemiesin closeproximity to each other without raising thealarm.
