The treetops are covered with a dirty white blanket of snow. The smell of pine trees surrounds the land. The jagged moun- tains sit in front of the village. Winter is coming. The lake is starting to freeze, the clear blue sky reects of the lake. The elk on the hill bounce around looking for food. The sun is falling behind the hills, and the whole village knows that a wolf in the distance will howl again in the starry night .farming wasnt easy in that moun- tainous land. Even in the plains and val- leys, the land was rocky and water was scarce (Frey 249). It is in this unfavorable geographic envi- ronment that the civilization of Mounta- nia will be founded. It is a civilization whose design takes its inspiration from the study of past civilizations such as the Arabs, the Aztecs, the Greeks, the May- ans, the Mesopotamians, and the Ro- mans, among others. This book will docu- 2 Scott, Grace Friday, May 30, 2014 11:49:16 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:b0:03:1f ment the necessary steps to take in order to create a successful civilization. 3 Scott, Grace Friday, May 30, 2014 11:49:16 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:b0:03:1f A man's country is not a certain area of land, of mountains, rivers, and woods, but it is a principle and patriotism is loyalty to that principle. -George William Curtis SECTION II 4 Analysis of the Problem Scott, Grace Friday, May 30, 2014 11:49:16 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:b0:03:1f To have a successful empire would be having a good supply of food and water Due to its location, the major challenges of civilization of Mountania are nd- ing food and water. 1. In the snowy mountains its hard to farm because of the weather condi- tions. We have to hunt animals, but because of the weather the animals hibernate. But we would have live stock to keep us alive. 2. And for a water source there is a river but it could be fro- zen, and we could capture snow and melt it by re. But we would never know if the water is clean or dirty. But there might be a stream in the forest. 5 This shows my terrace farming that I use to farm in the snowy moun- tains Gallery 2.1 Terrace Farming, Farming, live stock, Bathhouse, and Irrigation system Scott, Grace Friday, May 30, 2014 11:49:16 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:b0:03:1f 6 Scott, Grace Friday, May 30, 2014 11:49:16 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:b0:03:1f In order for a civilization to prosper, it must be able to modify the geographic area around it in order to meet the basic needs of supplying its inhabitants with food and water. One type of modication that I would make to the environment SECTION III 7 Proposed Solutions Scott, Grace Friday, May 30, 2014 11:49:16 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:b0:03:1f water cannel close to our village so we dont have to waste half of our time walk to get water and so farming crops wont be as hard. To have crops that could sur- vive in cold harsh weather, and we would have to have people who are willing to go and care for our crops every day. We would also have animals like sheep, cow, pigs, and chickens in a barn or a storage place so they dont freeze to death out in the cooled weather, and from these ani- mals we would get wool (sheep), meat (cow/pig) and eggs (chickens) .farm- ing wasnt easy in that mountainous land. Even in the plains and valleys, the land was rocky and water was scarce (Frey 249) In order for a civilization to prosper, it must be able to modify the geographic area around it. 8 Scott, Grace Friday, May 30, 2014 11:49:16 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:b0:03:1f No man is good enough to govern another man without the other's consent. -Abraham Lincoln CHAPTER 2 9 Law & Government Scott, Grace Friday, May 30, 2014 11:49:16 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:b0:03:1f Sparta made the Council of Elders, which had 2 kings and 28 other men older than the age of 60. Then there where people that had 28 and served a few years in the military they where Spartan citizens. And they where very smart when the Oligarchy was made, An Oligar- chy is when a group of people have power, and they all share the power. Oligarchy was made, An Oligarchy is when a group of people have power, and they all share the power. If you where over the age of 18 and where born and raised in Athens then you where a citizen of Athens and you where not a woman and a slave. The Council of 500 is when all citizens over the age of 30, and run a day-to-day busi- ness and suggest new laws, which were debated and approved by the Assembly which is consisted of 6,000 citizens. The Roman Government to me was not fair at all. The Patricians where the high class, wealthy land owners, and they ruled the government while the Plebe- ians (the poor people) were picking crops and serving the patricians. The Pa- tricians had a government called the Sen- ate this is when a group of 300 men 10 Scott, Grace Friday, May 30, 2014 11:49:16 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:b0:03:1f wealthy partisans that where elected for life. The Senate controlled the Consuls, which has shared command of the army. The Romans also had two Etruscan Kings and patricians had a group called Council of Elders that made the laws. Then the plebeians became mad and they wanted power. So the plebeians attacked the partisans awed because of the plebe- ians overthrowing the city. And the de- manded to have equal rights for voting and so the Twelve Tables, which had ple- beians, and patricians had equal rights. Code of Laws My laws are not as harsh as Hammu- rabis code of laws. My strongest punish- ment for the people in my civilization is putting them in jail, and being whipped in the town square. I use these punish- ments because my people will learn to be good people instead of becoming a dicta- tor. Harsh laws are good for a civilization because you dont want you civilization to crumble in your own hands. So citizens feel safe I can help them out. One of my laws is if you want to be apart of the gov- ernment you need to be a citizen and you have to serve 5 years in the military, this law is good because I can trust my citi- zens and when they are in the govern- ment it might help. My second law is to have a trading business you need to have a permit, if not you will be whipped 10 times and have to go to court. This is a good law because if one if my citizens is 11 Scott, Grace Friday, May 30, 2014 11:49:16 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:b0:03:1f trading things that should not be traded then it is good that my people know that they are going to be safe when they are trading. My third and nal law is that if you beat a child you will be put in jail for 4 years and be whipped in town square 8 times I think my people will respect this law because you dont want a child to have a bad childhood because then they will do it to their children and pass it on, all I want for my civilization is to have peace in the land and no war. Laws I. Women can vote only if they where born and raised: if not born and raised that woman will be kicked out of the city/town. II. If you steal an object from a person that you know and they caught you will return the object and be put in jail for 2 years III. If you beat children you will be put in jail for 4 years and be whipped in town square 8 times. IV. A ill person that is about to die may have one wish before they pass V. If you steal food for a market or a house you will be whipped 15 times in the center of town and be in jail for 2 years VI.If you have a job and you want a new one you can trade with a different man/ 12 Scott, Grace Friday, May 30, 2014 11:49:16 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:b0:03:1f woman that has a job you like, but they have to want to trade. VII.Woman have the right to vote only if they were born in the city. VIII.If you want to be in the government you have to sever 5 years in the mili- tary. IX.To have a trading business you need to have a permit, if not you will be whipped 10 times and have to go to court. X.No ghting is aloud. Useless you are at war. XI. Men can chose to serve in the govern- ment for 8 years XII. Children have to be in school for 15 years then if you are a male citizen you have to go to the military and work there for 5 years. XII. Every man must go to a assembly meeting if they are a citizen, but if they dont show up for a good reason they will not be a citizen anymore. XIII. Men must serve about 6 years in the military after they graduate from school. XIV. Everybody must pay taxes and if they dont they have to pay 2 times more and quit their job, all taxes go 13 Scott, Grace Friday, May 30, 2014 11:49:16 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:b0:03:1f to government for safekeeping until something very bad has happened XV. please be kind to others and respect them too. XVI. Slaves must have an owner in less than 15 days or they are free for 2 years, then it will start again. The Decline of The Western Roman Em- pire I think military spending is the biggest problem that leads to the decline of Rome by spending to much money on the sol- diers and weapons. The soldiers because we have to pay them for their contribute to the army and helping out. Weapons be- cause the army wants to be upgraded probably every time they go to war with another army they want to win with new This is my hanging gardens Gallery 4.1 14 Scott, Grace Friday, May 30, 2014 11:49:16 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:b0:03:1f weapons and advanced technology The king took probably took extra taxes to pay for the extra weapons and extra sol- diers in the army and then the whole army and Rome would win all the wars they went into. Same with war ships they would have to be repaired every time they get wrecked in war and the boat men would have to be paid for their job and for the materials they use for the ships. I think that the king was the one that made all the money and used it to survive on the army and everything else involved with the military, instead of watching everything like crime and peo- ple losing their jobs. So in my conclusion I think the military was one of the worst things that lead to the decline of Rome and the fall of the people. I would make sure that the military does not take to much money out of the budget, but I might not even need an army because of the protection of the mountains, But if I do have an army I will make sure they protect my people and do not take too much money out of the em- pires budget. I will make weapons in- stead, and make the army make boat, and upgraded weapons. I will make allies with other empires to make a bigger em- pire. I want my empire to be safe and I dont want them to be a unsecured em- pire that my follow the decline of Rome. I will make an army that is responsible, 15 Scott, Grace Friday, May 30, 2014 11:49:16 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:b0:03:1f strong, and that knows how to ght, like Sparta, which did not pay their army to ght they fought for Sparta. I want this to happen to my army for them to nd out it is not about the money it is about helping out the empire, and ghting for the peo- ple and saving their lives, I dont an army that lags around and does nothing if this wrecks my empire so be it. I believe that an army should do this because they are not going to get money out of the empires budget they should always know that they are ghting for the people and the empire. Political Leadership of Julius Caesar For the life and death we can learn from Julius Caesar. My leader should relize that he can be dictator for about 10 years and now to go over the top or cross the line. Caesar did not remain in power long enough to complete his reforms. The aristocrats of Rome and many Senators feared that if Caesar's power continued, the republican government would never be restored and Caesar would hand down his leadership to an heir. Thus, Sixty Senators plotted to kill him. He was warned of the conspiracy, but Caesar chose to ignore it. On March 15, 44 B.C.E., the assassins struck. (Frey...) I see that if my leader can chose to follow the rules and try not to over power the people in the senate. So I hope my leader can look 16 Scott, Grace Friday, May 30, 2014 11:49:16 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:b0:03:1f at Julius Caesars life and death and learn from it. Political Leadership of Augustus Caesar
I think Augustus Caesar was a bad leader, because his does not let people have a nor- mal life. He did not lets people chose who they wanted to marry and it was terrible that he made every person who was not married get land passed on for there fam- ilys and he made them pay extra taxes. And he would not let plays be enjoyable. I think Augustus Caesar was a bad ruler because he did all the cruel things and not letting people enjoy culture. I think that Augustus was a terrible ruler and that he should not have done the awful things to the people that worshiped him 17 Scott, Grace Friday, May 30, 2014 11:49:16 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:b0:03:1f We have always held to the hope, the belief, the conviction that there is a better life, a better world, beyond the horizon. -Franklin D. Roosevelt CHAPTER 5 18 System of Belief Scott, Grace Friday, May 30, 2014 11:49:16 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:b0:03:1f Well if a civilization has a belief system then they have something to thank that they think made them alive and thrive to have food and water. I also think that civi- lizations have to have a belief system to have a boring life and then they would do what the wanted and when the wanted. The civilization would be a pit, and people would destroy and die, but with a system we can come together. It would be a peaceful civilization, if they created a belief system. The people could have a peaceful life and they could do something else instead of doing the same thing over and over again life would be boring, but we have a belief system and maybe some of these belief systems are helpful. Moral Dilemma Joe is a fourteen-year-old boy who wanted to go to camp very much. His fa- ther promised him he could go if he saved up the money for it himself. So Joe worked hard at his paper route and saved up the $40 dollars it cost to go to camp, and a little more besides. But just before camp was going to start, his father changed his mind. Some of his fathers friends decided to go on a special shing trip, and Joe's father was short of the money it would cost. So he told Joe to give him the money he had saved from the paper route. Joe didn't want to give up going to camp, so he thinks of refus- ing to give his father the money. 19 Scott, Grace Friday, May 30, 2014 11:49:16 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:b0:03:1f Hinduism If Joe were Hindu, he would give the money to his father because he would want to have a better life in his next life, but his father who asked for the money would have a bad next life because he did not follow the rules of Karma. Karma is when after a person dies then it depends on its soul if he or she has had a good life or a bad life. Then if they had a good life, their soul would have a better life; but ifas an example you were to rude to peo- ple, stole money, and take food, then your soul would go into a lower class, if you where a Guard you would become a poor person, then maybe you would end up as a bug even. If people lived well, they might be born into a higher class in their next life. If they lived badly, they could ex- pect to be reborn into a lower class. They might even be reborn as animal.(Frey 149) Joes dad would have a bad Karma by taking Joes money, but if Joe was prac- ticing Dharma he would give the money to his dad but the dad would not let Joe give him the money because of his prom- ise and he has to follow his duty by Dharma. Buddhism If Joe were Buddhist he would give the money to his father because he would fol- low the Eightfold Path. He would follow 20 Scott, Grace Friday, May 30, 2014 11:49:16 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:b0:03:1f the rule live a life of selessness. His fa- ther would not be following the Eightfold path, and his father lied to him about him going to camp so his father would have broken two of the Eightfold paths rules, The Buddha could have selshly es- caped into enlightenment. Instead he chose to teach others the path that he had found. In time, his followers spread his teachings throughout India and others parts of Asia (Frey 159). The Buddha al- ways followed the middle way and Joe And His father should go the middle way by Joe not going to camp, and Joes father would not go on his shing trip. Confucianism If Joe were Confucius he would give the money to his father, because one of the rule of Confucianism is to respect the eld- ers, there forth Joe should give the money to his father. Because of this relationship between father and son should be tight so the son would give the money, and forget about what happened between them, but the father has to be kind, honest, and wise there forth, Joes father would not take the money, and live up to his prom- ise to letting Joe to camp that he saved up for. According to Confucianism, there are ve basic relationships: ruler and sub- ject, husband and wife, father and son, 21 Scott, Grace Friday, May 30, 2014 11:49:16 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:b0:03:1f older sibling and young sibling, and friend and friend. (Frey 208). In conclusion people should follow a relig- ion because then everybody would be out of control and. Buddhism, Confucianism, and Hinduism and other religions have all taught us something that we have to re- spect each other, and having moral judg- ment. Buddhism taught us to follow the Eightfold path, Hinduism taught us that we should be kind to each other or we would have a different life, in the next life, Confucianism taught us that we need to respect the elders and the ones above us, in my conclusion we need a religion in a civilization, to learn moral judg- ments. Mountaina Sacred Spaces
In my civilization Mountaina, one of our sacred spaces or the Meditating moun- tain, you hike up some stairs and you go through the sacred gate and drink from the sacred water from the pool and then you are blessed and you may meditate on top of the mountain and you can hear the rush of the waterfall when you are on the top of this mountain you should follow one of or rules that is Kenina. Another sa- cred space is the cave. This cave is hidden behind a waterfall and has many torches that have been burning for ages and an- other place that you can meditate the rule 22 Scott, Grace Friday, May 30, 2014 11:49:16 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:b0:03:1f you should follow when you are here is Shuna. Shuna means that to be kind to yourself as you are to your neighbors. My last sacred space is the three sacred pool with a sand garden another place you meditate and respect one of my belief sys- tems Geroaniem, this means the golden rule. The Rise of Feudalism and the Church The fall of Rome did lead to the threat of the barbarians because Rome owned a huge part of Europe and when the Pope and the church and Charlemagne teamed up and the pope made some people king, and they had nobles, knights and peas- ants, and with this feudalism was formed. Feudalism provided people with protec- tion and safety by making a social pyra- This is on top of a mountain and you have to pass through the gate way and then go to the pool of water have a small cup of the water, then you can meditate and listen to the sound of the waterfall. 23 Scott, Grace Friday, May 30, 2014 11:49:16 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:b0:03:1f mid that went Kings, to Nobles, to knights, and to peasants, and serfs. And so when Rome fell Charlemagne and the Catholic Church started to rule and they where very powerful, and then Charle- magne died and the Pope and the Catho- lic Church, had to protect the Kingdom so they made up Feudalism, and they made deals with Nobles saying we will give you land for knights to protect the king- dom from barbarians such as Vikings and Visigoths, the deal was made and thats how feudalism was made. Decline to Feudalism The major events did lead to the fall of feudalism because the cause of the black death where the eas that killed half of china and the victims of the black death had black and blue blotches on skin, and people started to died in Europe as the eas started to migrate. The Hundred year war is what also lead to the fall be- cause of when the French and England went to war and people were probably still thing about what the Magna Carta. From Feudalism to Humanism I believe that the impact of the catholic church is what had the most impact on feudalism. The catholic had the most power and that much power could over throw the king, and they had lots of power because they could excommuni- cate the villager or anyone that did some- 24 Scott, Grace Friday, May 30, 2014 11:49:16 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:b0:03:1f thing bad to the church and even the king could get excommunicated, and the church could get land and money and the church could expand, the church also had control over education, they could have even more control when the pope talked to god. This was the Age of Enlighten- ment

Kennedy CHAPTER 7 28 Power of Ideas Scott, Grace Friday, May 30, 2014 11:49:16 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:b0:03:1f The Impact on Europe Europes society changed in many differ- ent ways, advancing in science and mathe- matics, literature, and in the ways of art such as sculptures, and painting. "Renais- sance in French means "rebirth."(Frey 315) Science changed by learning about the anatomy of the human race, mapping from a birds eye view, and circulation. Lit- erature had much more emotion, and ex- periences of individuals instead of- religion. Art advanced in also more de- tail, and made them more lifelike, with painting they have added more shadows, and also much more detail and include everyone in the picture and made them look the same. Back to the old days when humanist where under control, every- thing like related to art was a certain size of who was more important, and people didnt look life like, and same with sculp- tures, along with the art, and sculptures everything from the middle ages became less involved with the church. Most edu- cation in the middles ages was forced and under the control of the church instead of a government. Humanism would change my civilization because my art would be shown with more passion, such as the building will be more complex, or more detailed, sculp- tures will be more realistic and alive, 29 Scott, Grace Friday, May 30, 2014 11:49:16 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:b0:03:1f painting will also be real and more detail on what where doing and everyone in the painting will be important. In my civilization Mountania my people all respect God but since the new age has given them a new start, so they should know that if they want to be with the church they can be with the church, but everyone saw that the church wanted power and money, they wanted to overthrow the people that disrespected the church and god, they wanted to have more power to overthrow the king. Then once the humanist came and discovered the real ways in things, books, maps, art, science, math, and litera- ture changed everything. "Yet in other way the book shows the inuence of hu- manist ideas." (Frey 330) Impact of Our Civilization 30 Scott, Grace Friday, May 30, 2014 11:49:16 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:b0:03:1f Humanism would change my civilization because my art would be shown with more passion, such as the building will be more complex, or more detailed, sculp- tures will be more realistic and alive, painting will also be real and more detail on what where doing and everyone in the painting will be important. The Protestant Reformation There are many the questionable teach- ings and practices of the Catholic Church that caused people to think the church was corrupt. The Church had so much power, and with that power they could let people have get out of jail pass to get out from something bad that the church did not like, and if someone had lots of money they could buy on of those 31 Scott, Grace Friday, May 30, 2014 11:49:16 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:b0:03:1f passes the church would just look pass what the did and carry on. Another way the church was corrupts seniti, seniti is when the church would let rich people that could purchase a high place at the church; the church would even let people with not experience come in and get a high position at the church. How did the ideas and questions of reformers such as Martin Luther differ from the traditional beliefs of the Catholic Church and threaten its power. Heresy was the act of speaking out against How did the ideas and questions of re- formers such as Martin Luther differ from the traditional beliefs of the Catholic Church and threaten its power. Heresy was the act of speaking out against the church, and claiming that the beliefs and practices that individuals were forced to do, were in fact corrupt or not Christian at all. John Wycliffe was an English scholar who believed that the Bible needed to be translated in English so the people that where Christian of not they could all see that the church was lying to their faces. The church didnt like the idea of the Bible being translated into English because then everyone would be able to read the Bible and understand. What strategy did the Catholic Church use to deal with Martin Luther? Martin Luther was a German scholar and religious gure who was fed up with the catholic church and its many forms of cor- ruption. Luthers Studies of the Bible led 32 Scott, Grace Friday, May 30, 2014 11:49:16 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:b0:03:1f him to a different answer. No one, he be- lieved, could earn salvation. Instead, sal- vation was a gift from God that people re- ceived in faith. People, he said, were saved by their faith not good works. (Frey 352) He became irate when the pope sent out hundreds of Bishops to sell indulgences in order to fund the construc- tion of St. Peters Cathedral.
