S
even years ago, construction began
on a massive PACCAR engine plant
that would eventually cover 500,000
square feet along a 400-acre site at the
Golden Triangle Industrial Park.
At the time, it was welcomed news.
The economy was tough and Lowndes
County and the surrounding areas were not
immune. Plants were closing. People were
being laid off.
So in the summer of 2007, when PACCAR
announced that it would break ground on
the $400 million state-of-the-art facility
just outside of Columbus, then-Gov. Haley
Barbour said the plant would hopefully help
maintain economic growth and contribute to
an improved quality of life in the region.
Looking at the Golden Triangle landscape
today, you would be hard-pressed to argue
that the prediction was inaccurate.
Today, more than 400 people go to work
everyday at the facility on Paccar Drive.
They do steady work. In May, Scott Blue,
the plants manager, said that since the
plant began operating in 2010 it has had
approximately 50,000 engines assembled
within its walls.
The Golden Triangle has been a terrific
partner to get the plant started and now
sustain it as the world-class facility that it is,
Blue said.
While PACCAR appreciates what the
region has done for it, the stable leadership
and innovation it has displayed in the area
has not gone unnoticed.
This spring, at the annual Golden Triangle
Industry Appreciation Luncheon at East
Mississippi Community College, PACCAR
earned the Directors Award, the events
highest award.
The award, according to organizers,
was for the highest level of recognition
through workforce training, demonstrating
management excellence with superior
outcomes, continuing to improve and build
upon outstanding results and excellent
systems and deploying world-class process.
PACCAR was founded in 1905 in Seattle,
Washington. The corporate headquarters
remain there still. The company employed
roughly 22,800 people worldwide in 2012.
Where does the all-caps name come from?
It is an acronym for the companys original
name, Pacific Car and Foundry.
The companys focus is the design,
manufacture and sale of premium trucks
under the brands of Kenworth, DAF and
Peterbilt.
The Columbus plant, Blue said, machines
cylinder blocks and cylinder heads for 11-liter
and 13-liter engines that when assembled,
become the MX11 and MX13 engines, which
PACCAR unveiled for Peterbilt and Kenworth
trucks at the Mid-America Trucking Show in
early 2010.
The MX13 engines are assembled at the
Columbus plant. Blue said that in the near
future, employees will also start assembling
the MX11 engines inside the facility.
The MX-11 engine is a 10.8-liter, six-
cylinder engine with power outputs up to
440 horsepower and a torque range up to
1,550 lb-ft. The MX13 engine is a 12.9-liter
rated engine with power outputs up to 500
horsepower, and it is designed to meet the
demands of both linehaul and vocational
heavy-duty truck applications. MX engines
are designed to last for 1 million miles
without a major overhaul.
Blue said the Columbus plants assembly
line works two shifts, five days a week. The
machining area, meanwhile, works three
shifts, five days a week.
The plant is totally climate-controlled
year-round and puts zero waste into the
local landfill.
Since PACCAR began producing engines
in Columbus, the Golden Triangle has
slowly rebounded out of a tough economy.
Industries are locating here. Others, already
here, have announced plans to expand.
Just last year, it was announced that
Yokohama Tire Corporation had selected
West Point as the location for its new
U.S. commercial truck tire manufacturing
plant, which includes a 931,000-square-
foot facility. It is set to open in 2015, will
eventually manufacture 1 million commercial
tires annually and employ 2,000 people.
The future looks bright in the Golden
Triangle.
And PACCAR whose MX13 engine was
named the 2013 engine of the year by the
American Truck Dealers Association is a
major contributor to that outlook.
Blue credited EMCC, the Golden Triangle
Development LINK and local government for
the successes the area is having in pulling in
industry.
(They) have truly worked together
to make this a very healthy business
environment, he said.
