Case study

A. evaluate the inducement offered to the southern recreational vehicle company

by the community leaders of the Ridgecrest Mississippi
B. what problems would a company experience in relocating form a heavily
populated industrialized area to a calm rural small town
C. evaluate the reasons cited by O brain for relocating and were they justifiable.
D. What legal and ethical responsibilities does a company have when they have
made a decision to cease operations.
Answers
A. There were 5 main inducements that was offered by the Mississippi community leaders to the southern
recreational vehicle company ,these were the only inducements that werenot offered by the other potential
relocation area’s. They are
1.exeption from county and municipality taxes for 5 years
2.free water and sewage services
3.construction of a second loading dock at the industrial site , free of cost.
4.an agreement to issue $500000 for a future expansion project as an industrial bond
5.public financial training for the workers in a local industrial trade school.

B.When a company is relocating from a heavily populated industrialized area to a local small town in the
rural area , they will have many issues.
1. they would not be able to find suitable and enough workers in and around the town to employ.
2.The industrialized area would have different environmental restrictions than the new rural area , they
might have restrictions on smoke emission , waste water dumping , and other environment related issues.
3.They might not get Enough industrial electricity to operate the possible heavy machinery that they might
have.
4.The employees may not have expertise in working in industries and they might be different in attitude ,
skill sets and other related matters.

C.The reasons O Brain cited for relocation were , increased operating costs and unreasonable demands
forced upon the company by the union.
I believe they can be justified by any company , because these are regular issues every production or for
that matter any industry would face , but I strongly feel that it could have been stated in a different way
such that the workers sentiments would not have been hurt.It might be true that the company has problems
maintaining operation costs below a particular method , but it is not mentioned in the letter the steps taken
by the industry to have a check on this or any efforts that was made by them to improve the situation.
D.The legal responsibilites may include giving enough time for the employes to quit , ie a time frame
agreed mutually by the workers and the industry when they commenced work , that they would give a
certain time limit before the industry would go out of service.Making a Settlement of any pending
salaries,bonuses,PF,and other things that the company owes to its employees.
Ethically the company has played safe by offering to find suitable jobs for the employees after they will
have to leave the industry , they could have further made sure that they intimated a few months earlier
when they were even planning to relocate that they had plans , so that the employee would have been more
mentally ready and would have had extra time to look out for a better alternative job.

Problems

8.16
Cross over point for Site # 2 and Site # 3:

1000 + 7(x) = 1700 + 4(x)

Or, 3(x) = 700

Or, (x) = 233.33

Cross over point for Site # 1 and Site # 2:

500 + 11(x) = 1000 + 7(x)

Or, 4(x) = 500

Or, (x) = 125

Ans

* Below a production level of 125, Site # 1 is optimal.

* Between a production level ranging from 125 to 233.33, Site # 2 is optimal.

* Above a production level of 233.33, Site # 3 is optimal.

* For Site # 1 – total cost = $500+$11(200) = $2,700

* For Site #2 – total cost = $1000+$7(200) = $2,400

* For Site #3 – total cost = $1700+$4(200) = $2,500

Ans

For a production of 200 units, Site # 2 is the best.
