About MRDES
Fulfilling a long felt need, National Dengue Control
Unit (NDCU) of the Ministry of Health has decided
to publish entomological surveillance data related to
Dengue on regular basis. This report, MRDES
(Monthly Report on Dengue Entomological
Surveillance) is planned to be publicized monthly to
all administrative and public health sectors and will
be useful for Dengue prevention and monitoring
activities in the country.
Currently, entomological surveillance for
dengue is carried out island wide by utilizing
surrogate resources and technical guidance of
NDCU, Medical Research Institute (M.R.I.), Anti-
Malaria Campaign (A.M.C.) and Anti Filariasis
Campaign (A.F.C.) according to respective zones as
shown in figure 1.
Teams functioning both at district and
divisional levels conduct sentinel site surveillance
and spot checks, in order to assess entomological
indices in their respective areas. These information to
be serve as early warning for initiation of control
activities by the respective districts and divisional
field staff. MRDES is based on reports received from
field teams serving at central and regional levels
(Figure 1).
Flashback
The 1
st
MRDES is featuring the summary of
entomological surveillance data collected during
2013. This is expected to serve as a baseline for
future control and prevention activities of Dengue. It
is highlighted that 48% of breeding places identified
in 2013 are discarded receptacles, 21 % in water
storage containers followed by other man-made and
natural water collections (Figure 2). Source
reduction activities should be conducted in order to
eliminate these breeding places.
In Sri Lanka, entomological surveillance for dengue
vectors is being conducted since 1963
(www.mri.gov.lk) mainly focusing western
province and selected sentinel sites since 2002. This
activity (by circular number 02-23-2002) has been
expanded and conducted island wide at present.
Figure 1:Map of Sri Lanka showing Dengue Entomological
surveillance zones
Total no of premises inspected = 185,090
Total no of positive premises = 11,271 (6.1 %)
Total no of positive containers = 15,860 (8.6%)
