PENTECOST SUNDAY i s al so referred to AS SUNDAY OF THE HOLY TRINITY or
SUNDAY OF THE DESCENT OF THE HOLY SPI RI T, and i s one of the Great
Feasts of the Eastern Orthodox Church, which is celebrated 50
DAYS AFTER HOLY PASCHA and therefore al ways fall s on a Sunday.
Fi fty days after the Resurrecti on of
our Lord and Savi our, Jesus
Chri st, on the Jewish Feast of
Pentecost, whil e the Di sci ples
and the Apostl es, as well as
many other fol l owers of Chri st
were gathered together to
pray, God the Hol y Spi ri t
descended upon them i n the
form of ...cloven tongues of
Fire... wi th the sound of a
Mi ghty Rushi ng Wi nd, and they
al l began to speak i n di fferent
l anguages that were foreign to
them.
Many Hebrews had gathered from
al l over the known worl d i n
Jerusalem at that ti me to
cel ebrate the Great Feast of Pentecost, and, havi ng been drawn
to where the Apostl es and Di scipl es of Christ had gathered, they
were astoni shed to hear the il l i terate Fi shermen and the other
Di scipl es of Chri st prai si ng Almighty God i n all the di fferent
l anguages of the worl d so that EACH NATIONALI TY WAS CLEARLY ABLE TO
UNDERSTAND EVERY WORD THEY SPOKE.
Thi s amazi ng Event was wri tten i n detai l by St Luke i n hi s Book of the
Acts of the Apostl es, Chapter 2.
The number 50 as i n the 50

day after Hol y Pascha symbol i ses
Eternal , Heavenl y Ful fi lment i.e. seven times seven, pl us one.
The Eastern Orthodox Church regards Pentecost as THE FINAL
FULFILLMENT OF THE DI VINE MISSION OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST - and the
begi nni ng of the Messi ani c Age of the Ki ngdom of God, whi ch i s
Mysti cal l y Present i n Hi s Church. (In fact, the Messianic Age began
much earlier with the conception and birth of our Lady Theotokos
the Mother of God Incarnate.)
PENTECOST SUNDAY WAS THE BEGINNING OF THE ONE, HOLY, CATHOLIC AND
APOSTOLIC CHURCH OF CHRIST.
Besi des cel ebrati ng the Descent of the Hol y Spi ri t, the Feast of
Pentecost also cel ebrates THE FULL REVELATION OF THE HOLY TRINITY
GOD THE FATHER, GOD THE SON, AND GOD THE HOLY SPI RIT.
The Hymns celebrate the Si gn of THE FINAL ACT OF ALMIGHTY GODS SELF-
DISCLOSURE TO THE WORLD OF HIS CREATION AND THE DIVINE REVELATION OF
THE PURPOSE OF HIS DIVINE PLAN.

To Orthodox Chri sti ans, the Feast of Pentecost is not j ust a
cel ebrati on of an Event i n hi story. It is al so A CELEBRATION OUR
MEMBERSHIP IN THE CHURCH OF CHRIST, for we have li ved Pentecost
and we have recei ved "...the Seal of the Gift of the Holy
Spirit..." duri ng the Hol y Mystery of Bapti sm and Chri smati on.
For the Feast of Pentecost the Icon of the Hol y Trini ty, the three
Angel i c Bei ngs who appeared to Abraham, i s pl aced i n the
centre of the Sol eas for venerati on, and is presented together
wi th the tradi tional Pentecost Icon.
The church i s decorated wi th fl owers and green l eaves to show that
GOD'S DIVINE BREATH COMES TO RENEW ALL CREATION. Green Vestments
and coveri ngs are al so used.
In many Parishes the Feast is cel ebrated the eveni ng before wi th the
Hol y Service of Great Vespers, fol lowed by Mati ns and Di vi ne
Li turgy on Pentecost Sunday Morni ng.
The Li turgy of St John Chrysostom has Festal Hymns that repl ace the
standard verses of the Antiphons.
The Hymns O Heavenly King... and We have seen the True Light
...are sung for the fi rst ti me si nce Pascha, cal li ng the Hol y Spi ri t
to "...come and abide in us," and procl ai mi ng that "...we have
received the Heavenly Spirit."
An extraordi nary Service cal l ed the Kneeling Vespers i s observed
on the evenig of Pentecost - to whi ch are added three sets of
l ong poetical Prayers, composed by St Basi l the Great, duri ng
whi ch everyone makes a ful l Prostrati on, touchi ng thei r foreheads
to the fl oor (Prostrati ons i n Church havi ng been forbidden from
the day of Great and Hol y Pascha up to thi s poi nt).
In many Pari shes, however, THE KNEELING VESPERS I S DONE I MMEDI ATELY
AFTER THE DIVINE LITURGY OF PENTECOST.
THE FEAST OF THE HOLY SPIRIT IS CELEBRATED ON MONDAY AFTER PENTECOST
SUNDAY AND SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST IS THE FEAST OF ALL SAINTS.
THE FAST OF THE APOSTLES BEGINS ON MONDAY AFTER ALL SAI NTS SUNDAY AND
CONTINUES UNTIL 29 JUNE, the Feast of the Apostl es, St Peter and St
Paul .
The length of thi s Fast depends on the date of Hol y Pascha.
Even though the start of the Li turgi cal Year begins on 1(or14)
September, the Li turgical centre of the annual cycle of Orthodox
Worship i s the Great Feast of Pascha, preceded by Great Lent
and Pre-Lent.
These are fol l owed by the fi fty days of Pascha, which ends wi th the

Unti l the start of the next Great Lent, THE SUNDAYS AND WEEKS FOLLOWING
PENTECOST, ARE NUMBERED FROM PENTECOST SUNDAY.

Praise Him with the sound of the
trumpet; praise Him with lute and
harp.
Today, all the Nations in the city of
David saw paradoxical things, when
the Holy Spirit descended in Fiery
Tongues, according to the utterance
of Luke the Theologian. For he said
that when the Disciples of Christ
were gathered together, a Sound like
the rush of a Mighty Wind was
heard, which filled the house
wherein they were. And they all
began to speak strange words,
strange Dogmas, strange Teachings
of the Holy Trinity.
Praise Him with timbrel and dance;
praise Him with strings and flute.
The Holy Spirit forever was and is and
will be, never beginning, never
ending, but forever ranked and
numbered with the Father and the
Son. It is Life and Life-giving, Light
and Giver of Light; Goodness Itself
and the Source of Goodness;
through Whom the Father is known
and the Son is Glorified, and by all is
known the One Power, One Order,
One Worship of the Holy Trinity.
Praise Him with tuneful cymbals;
praise Him with loud cymbals. Let
everything that has breath praise
the Lord.
The Holy Spirit is Light and Life, and a
Living Noetic Spring. Spirit of
Wisdom, Spirit of Understanding;
Good, Upright, Noetic, Ruling,
purging offences; God and Deifying;
He is Fire issuing from Fire, Uttering,
Inciting, Distributing the Gifts of
Grace. Through Him the Prophets
and Apostles of God and the Martyrs
were all crowned. Strange to hear,
strange to behold: Fire distributed
for the apportioning of Gifts.
> Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit, now and

Today, all the Nations in the city of
David saw paradoxical things, when
the Holy Spirit descended in Fiery

of Luke the Theologian. For he said
that when the Disciples of Christ
were gathered together, a Sound like
the rush of a Mighty Wind was
heard, which filled the house
wherein they were. And they all
began to speak strange words,
strange Dogmas, strange Teachings
of the Holy Trinity.

our transgressions, for according to
the height of Heaven from earth, so
the Lord reigns in Mercy over those
who Fear Him as far as the East is
from the West, so does He remove
our transgressions from us!
As a father has compassion for his
children, so does our Lord have
Compassion on those who Fear Him,
for He knows how He formed us
He remembers that we are clay.
As for mankind his days are like grass
- like a flower of the field he
flourishes; for the wind passes over
it, and it shall not remain and it
shall no longer know its place.
Yet the Mercy of the Lord is from Age
to Ages upon those who Fear Him.
And His Righteousness is upon
childrens children to those who
keep His Covenant and remember
His Commandments to obey them.
The Lord prepared His Throne in
Heaven and His Kingdom rules over
all.
Bless the Lord, all you His Angels
Mighty in Strength who do His
Word - who heed the Voice of His
Words.
Bless the Lord, all you His Hosts His
Ministers who do His Will.
Bless the Lord, all His Works, in all
places of His Dominion!
Bless, O my soul, the Lord!

Create in me a clean heart, O God, and
Renew a right spirit within me.
Do not cast me away from Thy
Presence, and taken not Thy Holy
Spirit from me.
Restore to me the Joy of Thy Salvation,
and uphold me with Thy Guiding
Spirit.
I will teach transgressors Thy Ways, and
the ungodly shall return to Thee.
Deliver me from blood guiltiness, O
God, the God of my Salvation, and
my tongue shall greatly rejoice in
Thy Righteousness.
O Lord, Thou shall open my lips, and
my mouth will declare Thy Praise,
for if Thou desired Sacrifice, I would
give it Thou will not be pleased
with Whole Burnt Offerings.
A Sacrifice to God is a broken spirit a
broken and humbled heart God will
not despise.
Do Good, O Lord, in Thy Good Pleasure
to Zion, and let the walls of
Jerusalem be built, then Thou will be
pleased with a Sacrifice of
Righteousness, with Offerings and
Whole Burnt Offerings - then shall
they offer young bullocks on Thine

The other Disciples therefore told him:
We have seen the Lord!
So he said to them: Unless I see in His
Hands the print of the nails, and put
my finger into the print of the nails,
and put my hand into His Side, I will
not believe.
And after eight days His Disciples were
again inside, and Thomas with them.
Jesus came, the doors being shut, and
stood in the midst, and said: Peace
to you!
Then He said to Thomas: Reach your
finger here, and look at My Hands;
and reach your hand here, and put
it into My Side, and do not be
unbelieving, but believing.
And Thomas answered and said to Him:
My Lord and my God!
Jesus said to him: Thomas, because
you have seen Me, you have
believed. Blessed are those who
have not seen and yet have
believed.
And truly Jesus did many other Signs in
the presence of His Disciples, which
are not written in this book.
But these are written that you may
believe that Jesus is the Christ, the
Son of God, and that, believing, you
may have Life in His Name.
