Course title: ET 601, 602 Elementary Hebrew I & II

Course description: A self-directed study course that provides the student with an introduction to the
phonology, morphology, vocabulary, grammar, and syntax of Biblical Hebrew. Includes
translation and analyses of selected passages in the Hebrew Bible.
Course instructor: Robert R. Gonzales Jr. has been a pastor since 1997 and currently serves as the dean
and a professor of Biblical Studies for Reformed Baptist Seminary. He holds a Master of
Arts degree (M.A.) in Theology and a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Old Testament
Interpretation from Bob Jones University. Hes the author of Where Sin Abounds: the
Spread of Sin and the Curse in Genesis with Special Focus on the Patriarchal
Narratives (Wipf & Stock, 2010) and a contributor to The Reformed Baptist Theological
Review, The Founders Journal, and Westminster Theological Journal. He and his wife,
Becky, have five children.
Course credit: 6 credit-hours (3 credit-hours each)
Course requirements: Student must satisfactorily complete the following course requirements:
(1) Reading The student must complete the following assigned reading:
Gary D. Pratico and Miles V. Van Pelt. Basics of Biblical Hebrew Grammar. 2

edition. Grand Rapids: Zondervan, 2007.
Note: student should complete workbook exercises as he is reading through the grammar
(see below). Also, if the student chooses, he may purchase the audio lectures for each
chapter for $89 at Amazon.com. Audio lectures are also available on iTunes University.
(2) Workbook The student should complete all the exercises in the companion workbook:
Gary D. Pratico and Miles V. Van Pelt. Basics of Biblical Hebrew Workbook. 2

edition. Grand Rapids: Zondervan, 2007.
Note: the answer key for each chapter in the workbook is provided on the CD Rom that
comes with the grammar.
(3) Proficiency Exams (1) Once the student has completed the chapters 1-15 in the grammar and workbook, he
should take the ET 601 Elementary Hebrew I Proficiency Exam
(2) Once the student has completed chapters 16-36 in the grammar and workbook, he
should take the ET 602 Elementary Hebrew II Proficiency Exam.
The first proficiency exam will cover vocabulary and materials addressed in the first 15
chapters of the grammar and workbook. The second proficiency exam will cover
vocabulary and materials from the entire grammar and workbook but will focus primarily
on chapters 16-35. For more details about the exams and guidelines for exam preparation,

If the student passes the proficiency exam (score of 80% or higher), he will receive credit
for the course. If the student fails the proficiency exam, he will have review the grammar
and workbook exercises and take another proficiency exam (which will be somewhat
different from the first).
