Find out what happens when a marathon-running, ro-
mance-writing, feisty entrepreneur opens a B&B in Spar-
woodand lives to tell the tale. One Book, One Kootenay
shortlist author Bobby Hutchinson brings her lightheart-
ed, quirky Blue Collar B&B: Adventures in Hospitality at a
special OBOK shortlist reading on Tuesday, June 17, 7 pm
at the Nelson Public Library.
From her childhood in a coal mining town in the BC
interior, Hutchinsons world was all about storytelling,
thanks to her parents. Not content to only read stories (she
says that learning to read was the most signifcant event
of her life), she set out to create her own. She has been
a traf c controller, daycare provider, seamstress, clothing
designer, and marathon runner.
Bored with training for the marathon, she made up a
story as she ran, about Phieddipedes, the frst marathon-
er. She fnished the Vancouver marathon, submitted that
story to the Chatelaine short story contest, won frst prize,
and went on to become a writer, penning some 55 ro-
mance novels to date.
I read and wrote my way through two marriages, three
pregnancies and two divorces, learning by osmosis about
plot, character, pacing and what makes a book readable,
she says.
Te frst Blue Collar B&B opened in Vancouver, but that
childhood coal mining setting called, and she relocated in
Sparwood. It was only a matter of time before the stories
accumulated, and Blue Collar B&B: Adventures in Hospi-
tality was born.
I think writers are born with a genetic quirk, says Hut-
chinson. Tey need stories the way other, normal people
need oxygen and food. Its an addiction. And if they cant
fnd an intriguing story, they simply write one of their
own.
Blue Collar B&B is one of three books shortlisted for
One Book, One Kootenay, in which readers vote for the
title they think all Kootenay book lovers should read. South
of Elfrida, short stories by Holley Rubinsky of Kaslo and
the fction title Africas Unfnished Symphony by Fauquier
resident Lucia Mann are also in the running. Copies of all
three shortlisted titles, as well as ballot boxes, are available
now in Kootenay-Boundary libraries.
Hutchinson also reads at Nakusp Library on June 18 and
Grand Forks Library on June 19. One Book, One Koote-
nay is an initiative of the Kootenay Library Federation.

Want to learn more about the unique
world of bats? Do you want free mosquito
control? Whether you want to promote
bats in your garden or need advice to safe-
ly evict them from a building, the Koote-
nay Community Bat Project can help.
Te KCBP provides educational pro-
grams on bats, works with landowners
who have bats in buildings and promote
the annual bat count to monitor bat popu-
lations.
Of the sixteen species of bats in BC, over
half are red or blue-listed, meaning that
their populations are declining and they
could become endangered. Tere are many
threats to these amazing creatures of the
night including habitat loss, intentional
extermination (which is illegal under the
BC Wildlife Act), wind farm development,
and most recently, White Nose Syndrome
which is a devastating introduced fungus
that has already killed approximately 6
million bats in North America. Basically,
bats need all the help they can get.
Funded by the Columbia Basin Trust,
the KCBP seeks information from the
public on where bats roost, provides site
visits and advice to residents with bats in
buildings, and requests help from the pub-
lic to act as Citizen Scientists to help count
bat populations. A local biologist can visit
your property to assess your bat situation,
identify the bat species and provide you
with information on safe evictions and
bat-houses.
One of the focuses this year is on the BC
Bat Count where residents are encouraged
to count bats leaving a roost site on their
property for four nights in order to mon-
itor populations. Tis long-term mon-
itoring information is very valuable since
there is very little known about local bat
species and their population numbers.

New National Library Service
Te Centre for Equitable Library Access (CELA) will of-
fcially launch a new national service to provide accessible
library materials including a broad selection of materi-
als in audio, braille, e-text and described video formats
to the over three million Canadians with print disabilities.
Over three million Canadians have a print disabil-
ity. Tis could be a learning, physical or visual disability
that prevents a person from reading conventional print.
Reading not only informs, enlightens and entertains; it
can transform lives, and research shows that access to a
broad range of reading materials has a direct and positive
impact on a childs success in school and in life. It is hard
to imagine a world without access to reading, but for the
over three million Canadians who have a print disability,
access to a wide selection of reading materials is ofen an
ongoing challenge. CELA makes it possible for these Can-
adians to gain easy access to a wealth of reading materials,
in formats of their choice, right in their own commun-
ities, through their local public library.
While May 29 marks the of cial launch, over 600 public
library systems across Canada are already CELA mem-
bers, or 75 per cent of Canadian public libraries. Tese
member libraries are serving 85 per cent of Canadians.
Ninety-four percent of Canadas First Nations libraries are
CELA members. And the CELA membership is growing.
CELA is a new national non-proft organization estab-
lished by Canadian public libraries to support accessible
collections and champion the fundamental right of Can-
adians with print disabilities access to media and reading
materials in a format of their choice.

Kootenay Mountaineering Club
Celebrates 50th Anniversary
In celebration of 50 years of mountaineering, hik-
ing, climbing, back country skiing, snowshoeing and all
things mountain the KMC is hosting an event on Satur-
day, June 7 to mark the occasion. Originally a chapter of
the Alpine Club of Canada, the KMC has been hosting all
forms of outdoor and mountaineering events since 1964
as an independent organization.
To celebrate, the KMC will host an exciting and in-
formative presentation by Dave Quinn. Folks will recog-
nize Dave as CBC Radio Wests Outdoor Guy. Join us for a
riveting evening tour of some of the major conservation
issues of the Kootenay Region, as seen from the uptracks,
summits, ridges, and descents of some of the areas classic,
and not-so-classic ski traverses. From Darkwoods to the
Goat range, the Central Purcells to the Moyie Range, and
the Flathead to the Central Rockies. Come prepared for
a feast of Kootenay wilderness, and a sense of the pres-
sures shaping its future. Tis is a fantastic opportunity to
be informed and entertained. Dave will also be speaking
about the Jumbo Glacier Resort, a matter that is dear to all
backcountry lovers in the Kootenays.
Te event will be held at the Old Castlegar Teatre, 185
Columbia Avenue, downtown Castlegar. Doors open at
7:30 pm, show starts at 8 pm. Tis event is co-hosted by the

What is anxiety? How do we know if a child is strug-

and has presented on this work at the 2014, 2011 and
2009 World Conferences on Focusing-Oriented Psycho-
therapies in New York. She is currently a clinical coun-
sellor with North Kootenay Lake Community Services
Society and a private practice clinician, working with
children, youth, and adults addressing issues that include
childhood and adult trauma, PTSD, anxiety, depression,
grief/loss, and relationship issues.

Pollution Awareness
Columbia Basin Trusts Know Your Watershed Pro-
gram and Friends of Kootenay Lake teamed up with
Nelson youth to paint yellow fsh by storm drains in the
Rosemont area. Claire de la Salle from Friends of Koo-
tenay Lake said By preventing pollution from entering
storm drains students are helping to keep Kootenay
Lake healthy. Many people dont know that the storm
drain system empties directly into the lake. Painting
yellow fsh by storm drains is done across the country
and can really have a positive impact to reduce pollut-
ants entering our waterways.
Te Trafalgar Leadership class helped to organize the
event with support from teacher Kelly Anast and Mon-
ica Nissen, from Know Your Watershed. Te goal was to
teach fellow students about the importance of keeping
only rain in the drain. In total, there were 67 students
from Trafalgar, South Nelson, and Rosemont schools,
5 teachers, and 11 volunteers, a total of 83 people who
painted 99 storm drains.
Te organizers wish to thank the Columbia Basin Trust
and all the hard working students and volunteers for mak-
ing this day possible!

Non-Invasive Alternatives And
Proper Yard Disposal
With the cold blanket of winter safely behind us, it is
time to celebrate spring and all this pristine season has to
ofer. As many from the Kootenay region can attest, this
means gardening season is upon us. Before the begin-
nings of a beautiful garden can take shape, clearing away
the debris of winter is a necessity. What can be done with
all that material lef behind? If some of that material in-
cludes invasive plant species disposal can ofen be a tricky
problem. If not disposed of properly, invasive plants can
spread rapidly, which could have disastrous impacts on
the Kootenay region.
You may be asking yourself, what are invasive plants?
And how would I recognize them if I were to see them?
Invasive plants are any species that can negatively afect
humans, animal species, and even whole ecosystems! As
described on the Invasive Species Council of BC (ISCBC)
website, Many invasive plants have been introduced to
BC without their natural predators and pathogens that
would otherwise keep their populations in check in their
countries of origin.
Invasive plant species can be spread through a variety of
ways and unfortunately the biggest one is improper dispos-
al. Te Central Kootenay Invasive Plant Committee (CK-
IPC) has identifed many illegal disposal sites in the Koote-
nay area and encourages the proper handling and disposal
of invasive plant species. What does proper disposal entail
you might ask? Interestingly, composting and recycling are
NOT the answer as these are surefre ways for those pesky
invasive plants to spread their seeds and continue to grow.
Instead, bagging and burning either at your local landfll or
during burning season are much more efective in ensuring
these invasive plants are destroyed.
Not only is it important to know what an invasive plant
species is and how to properly
dispose of it, but learning about
non-invasive plant alternatives
is equally as imperative. For ex-
ample, babys breath, which is
a staple in many forist shops is
actually an invasive plant and
can have a harmful impact on
the food source of grazing ani-
mals. A non-invasive alternative
to babys breath would be pearly
everlasting, which looks almost
identical but without the invasive
undertone. For more examples of
