OPENING MONOLOGUE
August: I know I am not an ordinary ten year old kid. I mean, sure, I do ordinary things.
I eat ice cream, ride my bike, play ball. Stuff like that makes me ordinary. I guess. And I
feel ordinary, inside. But I know ordinary kids dont make other ordinary kids run away
screaming. If I could have one wish, I would wish that I had a normal face that no one
would notice at all. I want to walk down the street without people doing that look-away
thing. Heres what I think, I think the only reason Im not ordinary is because no one
ELSE sees me that way, but me? Im kinda used to what I look like by now and now I
know how to pretend not to see the faces people make. Weve all gotten pretty good at
that, Me, Mom, Dad, Via well not so much Via. I think that I am the only one in the
world that sees how ordinary I am is me. My name is August by the way. I wont
describe what I look like, whatever youre thinking its probably worse.

MOM AND DAD TALKING
Mom: We cant keep protecting him we cant just pretend that he is just going to wake
up and this isnt going to his reality because it is and we need to help him learn how to
deal with it---
Dad: So sending him off to middle school like a lamb to the slaughter is the answer?
August: What's a lamb to the slaughter?
Dad: Just go back to bed Auggie.
August: Everyone will stare at me at school.
Mom: Honey, You know if you don't want to do this you don't have to. We spoke to the
principal and told him about you. He really really wants to meet you. Auggie there is so
much school can teach you that I cant! You know how terrible I am at fractions!
August: What did you tell him about me.
Mom: His name is Mr. Tushman and I told him how funny and smart you are. When I
told him you read Dragon Rider when you were six, he was like "Wow, I have to meet
this kid!"
August: [laughing] His name is Mr. Tushman!? That's a pretty bad name!
Dad: He has really big cheeks too! {funny voice} Hi Mr. Tushman, I see you are running
a little BEHIND today. Did your car get REAR-ended again? what a BUM-rap!
Via: Hey, whats all the noise? What's going on
August: Guess what Via? I'm going to school!
MEETING TUSHMAN
[Mom and August walk into school]
Mom: Hello Mr. Tushman, how are you? This is August.
Tushman: Well hello there! Hey so August this is what we are going to do today.
[waves in kids] Okay, kids this is August, and August this is Jack Will and Julian.
[Both kids shake Augusts hand, force a smile, and then quickly look downward]
Tushman:Well I'll leave you kids to a fun tour! Make sure to show Agust all the
important parts of the school
[Tushman and Mom exit]
Julian: Ok, so this is chair, thats a desk, that big black thing over there, that's a chalk
board. and thats and thats an eraser, you know what that is right?
Jack: Im sure he knows what an eraser is Julian, he wasn't born yesterday. So this is
the Auditorium, it's where we do all the plays and stuff we put on a play every year.
Julian: I'm sure he won't want to be on stage Jack... Hey, whats the deal with your face
, were you in a fire or something?
Jack: Gee Julian just shut up. Come on August we should go back now. Don't mind
Julians, hes a jerk.
[Julian intentionally bumps into August]
Julian : (Grinning) Oops sorry about that.
THE FIRST DAY MONOLOGUE
Julian: Today that kid with the weird face, August, had his first day of school. When he
walked down the hall everybody was staring at him and teasing him. One of the
teachers , Mr.Browne gave us a tip. It was when given the choice being right or being
kind choose kind. I know this was for August but hes a freak. He looks so weird.
You've got to feel bad for him but I can't resist teasing him. There's even a rumor going
around that he had 27 surgeries, but I don't think that's true because he is still really
ugly. His eyes are halfway down his face and bulge out of his face. He doesn't have
eyebrows or eyelashes and his eyelids sag over his eyes. I don't think he has checks
bones or a chin. It looks kind of like his face has been melted.

LUNCH WITH SUMMER
Xtra: Sorry this seat is taken.
August sits alone at lunch, girl Summer stands with her friends whispering, then walks
towards August and sits down.
Summer: Is this seat taken?
August: No.
Summer: My name is Summer.
August: I'm August.
Summer: Hey our names kinda match, Summer and August they are both Summer
names. We should make this the Summer only table.
Xtra Girl: Summer, why are you sitting over there, come sit with us!
Summer: It's too crowded over there, come sit over here with me and August!
Xtra Girl: Nevermind...
Summer: Who else has a summer name? Oh, theres a kid named Reid.
August: There's a Maya in my class.
Summer: Well, technically that's a spring name, but we'll let her sit here if she wanted
to. Though, if someone doesn't have a summer name and wants to sit here, they can.
August: Yeah, but only if they're nice.
Summer: Yeah. Even if it's a WINTER name!
August: Cool Beans.
[Auggie and Summer high-five]



BEAUTY AND THE BEAST
Mom and August are talking on their way home from school. August is exhausted and
doesnt really want to talk but his mom keeps pushing him. Through the conversation he
constantly looks down at a rock that he is kicking around. (Helmet on or off???)
Mom: Sooo how was it, 1-10?
August: A five, I guess.
Mom: Wow, that was even better than I had hoped for
August: Bye Summer, see you tomorrow! (waves to girl off-stage)
Mom: Who was that August? Is she in your class?
August: Thats Summer, and I dont know. I have a lot of classes.
Mom: So, um, was everyone nice?
August: Yes, Mom, everyone was nice.
Mom: Okay, so, how did you meet that Summer girl if she is not in any of your classes,
August?
August: We sat together at lunch.
Mom: She seems verynice. Shes quite pretty too.
August: Yeah shes nice. And yeah, I know shes pretty. (Pauses) Were kind of like
Beauty and the Beast. (Begins to run off)
AT HOME
Mom: Hey I just came to say goodnight.
Dad: Why dont you put August to bed tonight? Ive got some work to do anyway. Good
night my son, ahh my son...Im just so proud of you Auggie.(Exits)
Mom: (opens the hobbit and begins reading, August begins to cry) Its okay, Auggie. Itll
all be okay, Auggie.
August: Im sorry
Mom: Shhh, Shhh, you have nothing to be sorry about.
August: Why do I have to be so ugly mommy?
Mom: No baby youre not..
August: I know I am.
[Mom freezes and August narrates]
August: She kissed me all over my face. She kissed my eyes that came down to far.
She kissed my cheeks that looked punched in. She kissed my tortoise mouth. She said
words that I know we're meant to help me, (Pauses) but words cant change my face.

HALLOWEEN

August: Halloween has always been my favorite holiday. It's the only day of the year
where my face is hidden. This year I was planning on going as Boba Fett. But instead I
went as the Bleeding scream at the last minute. That way, no one could see my face.
(August walks toward s towards jack and julian)

J ulian: You know that dude named August he looks like one of those shrunken heads,
have you ever seen one of those.

Jack: Yeah he looks like an ork.

Julian: If i looked like that I would put a hood over my face every day.

Jack: I thought about this a lot and if I looked like that i think I would kill myself.

Julian: You would not!

Jack: I guess not, but I would hate looking at myself in the mirror everyday and looking
like that

Julian: Then why do you always hang out with him.

Jack: I don't know, Tushman asked me to hang out with him at the beginning of the
year, and he MUST have asked the teachers to sit us together. HE always follows me
around, I mean what am i supposed to do?
Julian: Just ditch him dude...
August Reacts and then runs out of the classroom.
Jack: Yeah I guess so...



JACK PUNCHES JULIAN

Jack: I know some kids actually like and do well in school, but I can honestly say that I
am not one of them. Im especially bad at science. I used to do okay when I was friends
with Auggie, but now that we're not friends anymore Im back to failing. I cant believe I
was so stupid to have said those things to him. I would have never said it if I knew it
was him in that costume. I was just going along with everyone else. The worst part, is
that August was one of the best friends I ever had.
(Bell Rings)
Teacher: Dont forget to get with your partners! The science fair is in two weeks.
Julian: (Smirking) Looks like you and your(make air quotations with fingers) best but,
August are partners. Hello, Earth to Jack Will?
Jack:(Getting up to leave) Shut up, Julian.
Julian: You must be so bummed to get stuck with him Go and tell the teach that you
want to switch partners. I bet shed let you.
Jack: No, she wouldnt.
Julian: Ask her.
Jack: I dont want to switch partners, Julian!
Julian: Excuse me,---
Jack: (Whisper-screaming) No, Julian!
Julian: Can we switch partners? Me and Jack wanted to work together.
Jack: (Quickly) No, its okay, Im fine (Runs out of classroom).
Julian: Whyd you do that? We could have been partners! You dont have to be friends
with that freak if you dont want to be, you know
[Jack punches Julian in the mouth]

FAST FORWARD
Auggie: Did you really punch Julian in the face?
Jack; Yeah dude, he was just being a major jerk.
Auggie: About me?
jack: Yeah, i don't really know why i was ever friends with Julian, I guess just because
he was popular and stuff. But you're much cooler. Can we be friends again Auggie. I
didn't really mean any of the things I said I just said it because Julian was there. i'm
really sorry Auggie.
Auggie: Yeah of course we can be friends again.
Jack: Cool beans
Auggie: Cool beans!




SCHOOL GRADUATION

Summer: The fifth grade graduation is a big deal at Beecher Prep. There is a huge
graduation ceremony, with speeches, and memories, and the best part of all the
awards. There are awards for everything, the smartest, the best writer, and even the
most creative.

Mr.Tushman:This was a great year and I am so proud to be seeing off all of our 5th
graders, but now what you have all been waiting for the awards.

Summer: I got the award for writing, Sienna got the smartest of course, charlotte even
got one for music. Although this year Mr. Tushman introduced a whole new award.

Mr.Tushman:Last but not least we have one other award to give out, a new one. This
award goes to someone who showed incredible strength and perseverance. Id like to
award August Pullman with the August Pullman award for Courage and Excellence


Auggie goes over with his mom around all of his other friends and family (extras). He
has just graduated from the 5th grade at Beecher Prep.

[Auggie hugs his mother]
Auggie: (Softly) Thank you for making me go to school, Mommy.
Mom: Thank you, Auggie.
August: For what?
Mom: For everything youve given us. Me, your dad, Via, Jack, Summer, everyone, we
love you. Thank you for coming into our lives. For being you. (Getting emotional) You
really are a wonder, Auggie. Youre a wonder [Everyone freezes and then exits stage,
except Auggie. August is alone on stage]

August: (Talking to the audience) I know Im not an ordinary 10-year-old kid. I mean,
sure, I do ordinary things. I eat ice cream. I ride my bike. i play ball. Stuff like that makes
me ordinary. I guess. And I feel ordinary. Inside. I think the only person in the world who
realizes how ordinary I am is me. The thing is, My face doesnt make me special,and
neither do my clothes. Im just as ordinary as (pointing at people in audience) you, you,
or you. Going to school taught me a lot about friendship, family, fractions, but to sum up
the year Id say everyone deserves a standing ovation once in their life because we all
overcometh the world. My name is August and I wont describe what I look like. (Starts
taking helmet off) Whatever youre all thinking, its probably worse.
[LIGHTS GO OFF IMMEDIATELY AFTER AUGGIE FINISHES SPEAKING AND
BEFORE THE AUDIENCE CAN SEE ANY PART OF AUGGIES FACE]
