27 Years of Service
June 2014
TEAM SICO CELEBRATES
Share the Light of Soroptimist Service
So very proud to have a third SICO member
serve as District Director. Lyn Lurbe was
elected at the recent Founder Region Confer-
ence. She succeeds Lorene Hopkins of SIWFI.
With a huge responsibility ahead of her, she
heads for training in early J une in the
Victorian town of Eureka, California. One
of many future trips for our new Director. In
September, she will preside over her first Dis-
trict Meeting in Guam. So, SICO members
lets gear up to support Lyn in Guam.
Proud SICO members celebrate Lyn upon
return from the Region Conference.
Although J ane Murakami was not a member
of SICO when she was a District Director, she
served a term while a member of SI Honolulu.
Angie Bugarin also had a term as a District
Director a few years ago.
Three delegates represented SICO at the
Region Conference where many acquaint-
ances were renewed and new friends were
made.
Along with the break out sessions for
club officers and club procedures, there
were two presentations on Bullying and
Cyber Bullying. Amazingly and unfortu-
nately, the pervasiveness of bullying is
costing the lives of our young people as
well as older people. There was also a
short health and fitness session featuring
Zumba. Yes, Leona and J ackie were right
in there along with a few other Hawaii
delegates.

President Renes
Message
NA MEA HOU
Aloha Proud SICO Members,

As my year as your president is ending, I want to
thank all of you for this prestigious honor of representing the
most awesome group of women who strive to help other
women and girls to be their best. Many people say they never
heard of Soroptimists - which is a great opportunity for us to
educate them and ask them to join our mission.
Here is a sample of what you can say to humbly brag
about our own SICOs activities in 2013-14:
28 years of community service and partnerships
Support Leeward Domestic Violence Shelter
Human Trafficking Awareness program
Donate school supplies at Kipapa & Kahuku Ele-
mentary Schools and the Bobby Benson Center
Donate $10,000 education awards to single parent
women
Donate $5,000 high school scholarship
Donate $1,000 for Youth Citizenship Award
Donate $1,000 Ruby Award for Improving Lives of
Women
Support Lei Ilima Girls Club, Coalition for Drug
Free Hawaii
Support Bobby Benson Center, youth drug treatment
center

Army
Ehime Maru Monument cleaning project
Support Nozomi Project of Hope at Womens Lead-
ership Conference
Inducted new members: Zoe Tanaka, Meryle Hi-
rotsu, Tammy Cullen, Nahoku Ahlo
Please help us spread the word about the good work
of SICO, and please offer your suggestions for more activities
and projects for our 2014-15 year. You are also welcome to
join us at our Board Planning Meeting- Dots in Wahi-
awa, J une 25

me asap.

SICOs SCHOLARSHIP AWARDEE
SICOs second Community Action
Scholarship was presented to Rachel
Yonamine from Mililani High School.
She will be present at our meeting in
September before she goes off to college.
Shell give us more insight into her back-
ground at that time. She and Marilyn Lee
are shown here when Marilyn presented
her with the award.
SI Waikiki Foundation, Inc. invited all Oahu Soroptimist
clubs to their luncheon meeting on May 27th at the Pacific
Club. At this meeting, along with lunch, was a panel with
Senators Suzanne Chun Oakland, Chair of the Senate Com-
mittee on Human Services and J ill Tokuda, Chair of the Sen-
ate Committee on Education and Representative Della Au
Belatti, Chair of the House Committee on Health. Each dis-
cussed bills passed during the last Legislative session and
then focused on emerging issues. As fractured as many of us
think of the Legislature, there does appear to be actual for-
ward progress to improve lives in Hawaii. Lots of informa-
tion was shared. Check with J ackie Pactol for the handout
from Senator Oakland Chun that details the bills and more
information.
Some emerging issues:
*Long Term Care-Hawaii leads states in longevity.
*More food sustainability
*School based community health centers especially
in isolated areas
*Tweaking of education reforms from ten years ago

KIPAPA SCHOOL
ACKNOWLEDGES SICO
Through the years, SICO has made several donations to
Kipapa Elementary School. This past school year, another
donation of school supplies was made which garnered SICO
an invitation to their May Day program Ka Hoolaulea
Ohana. Marilyn Lee, Lyn Lurbe, Meryle Hirotsu, Nahoku
Ahlo and J ackie Pactol were able to attend and were publicly
acknowledged as the Club and individually. They were treated
to light refreshments before and after the program and were
among many invited guests including Hawaii State and City
Representatives and many education leaders. Of course, SICO
had the largest representation. While enjoying snacks in the
coolness of the school library, they were asked to explain So-
roptimist to which they gladly obliged. Those present were
impressed as Jackie and Marilyn explained the Soroptimist
mission, the SICO scholarship and the Womens Opportunity
Award.

SICO Members take a photo opportunity before the backdrop
for the celebrations theme.

There is an impressive
mural largely pieced to-
gether by the students and
our own Marilyn Lee. She
explained that the mosaic
is made up of glass pieces
and the two children fea-
tured are based on actual
students. Standing in
front of the mural are
Meryle, Nahoku, Marilyn,
Herman Kanae who
helped with the mural,
Principal Corinne Yogi,
Vice Principal, Lyn and
J ackie. Also impressive
is that Marilyn knows and sang the schools song!

$2500 Gold Table

Its time once again to put our best foot/feet forward to
raise funds for all the worthy causes to increase the economic
and social empowerment of women and girls.
Besides selling tickets to the event, the Silent Auction has
proven to be the most successful fundraiser. Several sugges-
tions have been sent out detailing the many kinds of baskets
in which some of us might like to participate. All individual
items must have a minimum value of $50. Besides baskets,
gift certificates are always a good idea as are handcrafted
items. Be sure to label each item with its value when you
turn it in to J ackie Pactol. This will allow for a proper as-
sessment when making the bid sheets and putting the baskets
together. As donations are made, J ackie will be sending out
emails to keep everyone updated.
Remember that this is also a Masquerade party so get your
outfits ready. Nothing scary or gory! For security, please
wear you mask only in the ballroom. Hints for a prize have
been made.
Members are expected to arrive early to welcome their
guests and to assist with any other areas that may need last
minute assistance.
Overall Chairperson is Lyn Lurbe. Please contact her with
any questions and concerns.
This is SICOs only fundraiser for the year so lets take it
over the top!
