Ask students to identify what senses
the poet has used in his poem.
Discuss that poets use parts of language
to communicate ideas and pictures
with words.
Introduce the words metaphor,
simile and personication and explain
their meanings.
Divide the class into small groups of
three - four and give each group a
sample of readily available seafood such
as a mussel, a small tin of tuna, a prawn,
or some seaweed.
Ask the class to collectively brainstorm
words to describe what they have in
front of them.
Choose the seven least creative words
from the brainstorm.
Inform the class that these words cannot
be used in the following activity.
Ask students to respond to the following
questions using a Bubble Map.
If (name of seafood sample) were a
type of weather what type of weather
would it be?
If (name of seafood sample) were a house
what type of house would it be?
Continue with examples such as an
occupation or job, a piece of clothing,
a piece of furniture, a feeling, a car, a
style of music, a season etc.
Remind and encourage students
to paint pictures with the words
of their answers.
Explain that the students have just
created a stunning set of metaphors,
similes and personications.
Propose a draft structure for the poem
using the simple starter a mussel
(or relative seafood sample) is...
Create a draft of the poem using paper
or Google Docs depending whether
students wish to create their poem
independently or collaboratively.
Edit and adjust.
Use Prezi to design a media rich version
of the poem that enhances the written
language by using visual techniques.
