Emperor Constantine the Great, the first Christian King, realized that the Church of Christ was
plagued with various (incorrect) dogmatic opinions of Arius, the Protopresbyter of
Alexandria.
Emperor Constantine therefore organized in 325 the first Great Ecumenical Council at Nicea in
Asia Minor, which was attended by 318 God-bearing Fathers from throughout the Orthodox
Christian world who hastened to meet so as to deliver (protect) the Church from heresy.
Emperor Constantine attended throughout the duration of the Council, and many of the Holy
Fathers who were present had suffered greatly for their Confession in the Name of Christ,
during the reign of the previous Emperor.
Some had one eye removed, some had their noses or their ears cut off, while others had their
hands cut off or had suffered other hideous injuries from cruel tortures.
The first day of this Event was amazing, for at the days conclusion after the Prayer, the earth
trembled, which bore witness to the Truth that the decisions made at the Holy Gathering,
were not of the will of mankind, but by the very Breath, Inspiration and Will of God the Holy
Spirit. (i.e. due to the Will of God the Father, through God the Son, by means of God the Holy Spirit. mp)
The main topic of discussion was the Divinity of the Second Person of the Holy Trinity our Lord
and Saviour, Jesus Christ.
The Holy Fathers declared Christ as the Eternal, Only Begotten Son of God ...Begotten of the
Father before all ages... while Arius argued that although Christ was ...the Son of God...
He was not Begotten of the Father, but ...was created by the Father at some point in
time! Thus there was a time that the Son of God did not exist!
Arius further blasphemed against Christ, saying that Christ ...received flesh from the Virgin Mary
only in appearance and not in actuality.
Because Arius and his supporters used great, eloquent words, and the Holy Fathers were
humble and unable express themselves as eloquently as the heretics, the Holy Fathers
found themselves at a disadvantage.
Then, the Archbishop of Myra in Lycea, St Nicholas, consumed with sadness, slapped Arius
across the cheek, which was duly reported to the Emperor, whereupon Arius succeeded in
having St Nicholas imprisoned.
In the middle of the night, St Nicholas of Myra was Visited by Christ our Saviour and the Ever-
Virgin Theotokos, from whom he received a golden Gospel Book and a golden woven
Omophorion (Palium a Liturgical Vestment of Bishops).
Emperor Constantine, having heard about the Miracle and seeing the Miraculous Gifts for
himself, immediately released St Nicholas.
Yet another Divine Inspired Holy Hierarch who participated in the Synod was St Spyridon of
Trimythous, who used a piece of potshard to illustrate how one single entity (a piece of
pottery) was composed by three unique entities (fire, water and clay) - a metaphor for the
Orthodox Doctrine of the Holy Trinity. As soon as he finished speaking, the shard suddenly
burst into flame, water dripped on the ground, and only dust remained in his hand.
As Glorious as the Miracle was of the Heavenly Gifts that St Nicholas of Myra received, this
unique demonstration that St Spyridon was able to deliver was just as equally amazing and
impressive, since both encouraged the pious to prevail over the heretics.
Slowly but surely, the Holy Fatherswith the Divine Help and Inspiration of the Holy Spirit
triumphed over the heretics, and although they were full of Divine Love towards everyone
including the heretics, our Holy Church Fathers - with mercy and with tears in their eyes -
anathematized and removed Arius from the Synod as ... an enemy of the Son of God and
an Antichrist.
Later, the Holy Fathers composed the Symbol of the Faith and 20 Canons, which promoted
the Liturgical Unity of the Church. They also decided that the Orthodox Church would follow
the Julian Calendar to the end of the ages, and they wrote a Paschalion, - a record of
when Pascha is to be celebrated every year until the end of time.
Two of the Holy Fathers Reposed during the Assembly of the First Ecumenical Council, which
saddened them all. At the end of the First Assembly, Emperor Constantine placed the
decisions of the Synod signed by the remaining 316 Fathers in the coffins of the two
Reposed Holy Fathers. On the morning of the second day, to the astonishment of all, upon
reopening the caskets, they found the signatures of the two Reposed Holy Fathers on the
documents resulting in all 318 signatures!

When the morning had come, Jesus
stood on the shore; yet the Disciples
did not know that it was Jesus.
Then Jesus said them:, Children, have
you any food?
They answered Him: No.
So He said to them:, Cast the net on
the right side of the boats, and you
will find some.
They cast the net and then they were
unable to draw it in because of the
multitude of fish.
Therefore that Disciple whom Jesus
loved said to Peter: It is the Lord!
Now when Simon Peter heard that it
was the Lord, he put on his outer
garment (for he had removed it), and
plunged into the sea.
But the other Disciples came in the
little boat (for they were not far from
land, but about two hundred cubits),
dragging the net with fish.
Then, as soon as they had come to
land, they saw a fire of coals there,
and fish laid on it, and bread.
Jesus said to them: Bring some of the
fish which you have just caught.
Simon Peter went up and dragged the
net to land, full of large fish, one
hundred and fifty-three; and
although there were so many, the
net had not broken.
Jesus said to them: Come and eat
breakfast.
Yet none of the Disciples dared ask
Him: Who art Thou? - knowing that
it was the Lord.
Jesus then came and took the bread and
gave it to them, and likewise the
fish.
This is now the third time Jesus
showed Himself to His Disciples
after He was raised from the dead.
