But there are and were a number
of events, places and buildings
that are unique and people who

There are also are several wineries in the area.
Troutbeck is located east of Amenia in the hamlet
of Leedsville. Named for Leeds, England, a large
wool mill once existed there. Troutbeck has a
history of over two centuries of guests and residents
that have included the greatest writers and thinkers
of the 19th and 20th centuries: Emerson, Thoreau,
Twain, Burroughs, Lewis Mumford and Thurgood
Marshall, among many others.
The first meetings for the establishment of the
NAACP were held at Joel Spingarns Troutbeck in
the early 20th century.
Cooks Hill, a small rise in the center of Amenia
hamlet, was the location of The Amenia Seminary,
the outstanding secondary private school where
students were drawn from all of the United States in
the 19th century. The three white-frame buildings
housed classes for both men and women. With the
growth of public secondary schools, the seminary
closed and was replaced by the current brick
building. At first it was used by all grades from one

The
Amenia Drive-In
The silver screen returned
to the town last year when the
Stefanopoulos family opened the
Amenia Drive-In behind Four
Brothers Pizza Inn, which they also
own.
The family held a soft opening on
July 19, 2013, with a showing of the
Indiana Jones classic, Raiders of
the Lost Ark.
The drive-in opened for its first
full summer season in May and
is currently showing first-run
feature films seven nights a week.
Recent titles include Godzilla,
Maleficent and Blended.
The owners are also selecting
older movies to show on
Throwback Thursdays, ranging
from recent films The Hunger

selection of fresh produce, farm products, prepared foods and ...
blankets, pet futons and mattress pads made out of sheep skin?
Now in its fifth season, the
Amenia Farmers Market hosts a
variety of local artisans and farmers,
each of them sharing with the
community their homegrown foods
and homemade crafts.
The market opened in the
summer of 2010 with just half a
dozen vendors. Having a market was
the idea of Rudy Eschbach, owner-
operator of Cedar Hill Farm in
Amenia. Apparently, gathering local
farmers and artisans was necessary
because there were very few outlets
for small town farmers to share their
goods.
