The Day of Pentecost is the last day of the Great Fifty Days of Easter. As such, it is
the culmination of the weeks of Easter; and it is a day in continuity with the Resurrec-
tion experience of the church. Christ has been raised from the dead and has ascended to
the right hand of God. The Day of Pentecost is a feast of Resurrection and of the gift of
the Spirit to the church.

Lectionary Readings
The Day of Pentecost Color: Red.
Acts 2:1-21. On the Feast of Pentecost, the Holy Spirit arrives with power upon 120
disciples of Jesus gathered in an upper room. They begin preaching publicly, and thou-
sands of pilgrims from nations far and near hear the good news of salvation in Jesus
Christ in their own languages.
Psalm 104:24-34, 35b.
1 Corinthians 12:3b-13. The Holy Spirit gives many gifts for many ministries in the
one body of Jesus Christ.
John 7:37-39. Jesus preaches at the Feast of Sukkoth/Booths (five days after Yom
Kippur): "Come to me, and rivers of living water will flow from you!" Following Jesus
means becoming a channel of the Spirit for the whole world.

This is one of the few artistic renderings that seems to take into account that the mira-
cle of this day was primarily the outpouring of the Holy Spirit made manifest among
the people as the 120 or so disciples proclaimed the good news of the resurrection and
salvation through Jesus Christ outdoors in the midst of thronging pilgrims. (Public

Ministries/Activities Within Our Church
Fathers Day is next Sunday, June 15. The ladies of the church will be serv-
ing a breakfast in honor of all the fathers and men in the church at 8:30. There
will be no Sunday School classes so that the whole church can fellowship to-
gether at breakfast. Honor you father, and your Heavenly Father, by being in
church on Fathers Day!
The Church Session will meet for the regular monthly meeting this Tuesday
evening at 6:30 in the church office.
New Childrens Sunday School & Childrens Church Journey with Jesus.
Welcome to a journey of discovery! The next 13 weeks will take us on a whirl-
wind tour of the land where Jesus walked. As we travel through cities where Je-
sus ministry came alive, our aim is to grow in our knowledge and understand-
ing of who Jesus is and how to live in ways that show love for Him. Every Sun-
day morning at 9:00, and carries through to Childrens Church, for ages 5-12.
Stephen Ministry - Got a burden? You dont have to carry that burden alone.
You can have a Stephen Minister who will spend time with you, listen to you,
and walk beside you. If you or someone you know is interested in receiving care
through the Stephen Ministry program at New Hope, please contact the pastor
through the Church office at (615) 449-7020 and request that a Stephen minister
contact you.

Scripture References
Acts 2:1-8 New International Version (NIV)
The Holy Spirit Comes at Pentecost
2 When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place.
2
Suddenly a
sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole
house where they were sitting.
3
They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that
separated and came to rest on each of them.
4
All of them were filled with the Holy
Spirit and began to speak in other tongues
[a]
as the Spirit enabled them.
5
Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under
heaven.
6
When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, be-
cause each one heard their own language being spoken.
7
Utterly amazed, they asked:
Arent all these who are speaking Galileans?
8
Then how is it that each of us hears
them in our native language?
Footnotes:
a. Acts 2:4 Or languages; also in verse 11

Acts 2:12-18 New International Version (NIV)
12
Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, What does this mean?
13
Some, however, made fun of them and said, They have had too much wine.
Peter Addresses the Crowd
14
Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd:
Fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, let me explain this to you; listen
carefully to what I say.
15
These people are not drunk, as you suppose. Its only nine
in the morning!
16
No, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel:
17
In the last days, God says,
I will pour out my Spirit on all people.
Your sons and daughters will prophesy,
your young men will see visions,
your old men will dream dreams.
18
Even on my servants, both men and women,
I will pour out my Spirit in those days,
and they will prophesy.

Acts 2:40-47 New International Version (NIV)
40
With many other words he warned them; and he pleaded with them, Save your-
selves from this corrupt generation.
41
Those who accepted his message were bap-
tized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day.
The Fellowship of the Believers
42
They devoted themselves to the apostles teaching and to fellowship, to the break-
ing of bread and to prayer.
43
Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and
signs performed by the apostles.
44
All the believers were together and had every-
thing in common.
45
They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had
need.
46
Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke
bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts,
47
praising God
and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily
those who were being saved.

Thought for the Week
The Power of Pentecost
Power can be used in at least two ways: it can be unleashed, or it can be harnessed.
The energy in ten gallons of gasoline, for instance, can be released explosively by
dropping a lighted match into the can. Or it can be channeled through the engine of a
automobile in a controlled burn and used to transport a person 350 miles. Explosions
are spectacular, but controlled burns have lasting effect, staying power. The Holy
Spirit works both ways. At Pentecost, he exploded on the scene; His presence was
like "tongues of fire" (Acts 2:3). Thousands were affected by one burst of God's
power. But He also works through the church--the institution God began to tap the
Holy Spirit's power for the long haul. Through worship, fellowship, and service,
Christians are provided with staying power.
