Mantra is a unique approach to teaching *nglish as a second language that has gro,n out o-
Daniel Mena Mrquez. language learning concept that he calls /so-ropedia.0 1t is a blend o-
several approaches to the teaching o- second or -oreign language. 1t re-lects aspects o-
communicative approaches in its thematic curriculum and emplo2ment o- small group
processes. 1t re-lects the audiolingual approach ,ith its use o- dialogues' but ,ithout the tedious
and o-ten meaningless repetition that characterizes that approach. &nd it re-lects grammar3
translation approaches in its treatment o- the al,a2s troublesome concepts o- using prepositions'
pronouns' irregular verbs' and comparatives4superlatives.
5he -ort23-our dialogues' ,ith related readings' re-lect common social problems placed in an
interesting and even rac2 historical perspective' ensuring the continuing interest o- students.
5he dialogues build tension and motivate the students to become involved. 5here are interesting
roles -or both male and -emale students to pla2. Dramatization o- the dialogues should be
entertaining and' there-ore' educationall2 use-ul -or those engaged in them and also -or those
,ho observe. 1n addition' the2 ,ill o-ten be motivated to construct parallel and contemporar2
dialogues.
6n a technical level' the curriculum is care-ull2 cra-ted to lead students through the same
vocabular2 on a periodic basis' ensuring learning -or those ,ho don.t master some ,ords or
concepts at the -irst opportunit2. Di--icult areas o- *nglish' such as anton2ms' pronouns'
question patterns' irregular verbs' and comparatives and superlatives are treated ver2 directl2
,ith accurate and help-ul e7amples. 5he section on *nglish prepositions is especiall2 use-ul'
providing students ,ith criteria -or ho, and ,hen to use them correctl2.
