Since 1980 company Reinken is an experienced partner for blasting and coating techniques. Beside different
blasting methods Reinken is specialized on demanding coating applications for renewals and new built tanks.
Approved coating systems for drinking water and food applications according to German Water Resources
Law with temperature resistance up to 150C as well as chemically resistant internal coatings for aggressive
liquids or gases are applied reliably and competently.
Our joint project

Renewal of 2 hygienisation tanks of EWE biogas plant in Werlte/Germany

Year of construction: 2002
Structure: Concrete floor, walls made of metal sheets, enamel coated
Reason of maintenance: severe corrosion on wall elements, severe erosion
on floor area

Structural condition of tanks before renewal

Heavy corrosion on surfaces, edges and rivets of
metal sheets, enamel coating extensively
delaminated or vanished due to chemical attack
Extremely deep concrete erosion on the floor area
caused by the aggressivity of the biomass (after only
9 years operating time)
Way of proceeding

The floor was cleaned and troweled with our primer CERAM-FLOOR 8010
smoothly. Afterwards it was coated with PROGUARD CN 200.
The remains of enamel were blasted off the metal sheets. Then existing salts
were washed off before the complete walls were blasted once more to
prepare the substrate for coating application.
Thereafter, pre-coating of edges, rivets and joints between floor and wall with
PROGUARD CN 200-thix was necessary to provide ideal protection. Last
step was the 2-layer application of whole wall areas with our product
PROGUARD CN 200 by conventional airless spray method.
Advantages of PROGUARD CN 200

Due to excellent chemical resistance at high operating temperatures up to
130C PROGUARD CN 200 is the ideal coating product for the specific
demands in hygienisation tanks.

Application directly on concrete: PROGUARD CN-1M
Chemical resistance against aggressive biomass!
The ENSPAR Biogas GmbH plans, builds and accompanies individual biogas plants for versatile range of
use. Systematic and efficient planning facilitates technical construction and engineering rating of biogas
plants in consideration of following technologies, such as thermal use or digestate treatment. Due to the
experiences and competence of ENSPAR Biogas GmbH, many biogas plants in Germany and on
international field were planned, built and commissioned but also biogas plants of other manufacturers
were renewed and upgraded.

Recently, a new facility was built by ENSPAR Biogas GmbH. The floor
area of 360 m was coated with our high performance product
PROGUARD CN-1M; an optimum choice for highest efficiency and value
preservation.

Special properties of PROGUARD CN-1M:

High-grade chemical resistance
In this plant, apple pomace is used for the production of biogas.
Beside aggressive acids and gases which occur by the
fermentation process, the biomass is highly corrosive by increased
contents of sugar and the extreme acidic character of the apple
pomace (pH-value occasionally under 4).

Outstanding adhesion on concrete without primer
After adequate preparation of the concrete our product shows
extreme adhesion, very much higher than the internal cohesive
forces of concrete itself. No primer is necessary on cementitious
substrates. Therefore, enormous savings on working time and
material costs are achieved.

High temperature resistance
Due to the fermentation process high temperatures occur in the
biogas fermenter; our coating system provides safe and long-term
temperature resistance.

Application of the coating product
by rake and roller
(without any primer)

Personal experiences Interview with local biogas plant operator

Ceram Kote: Are there damages on the steel or concrete of your plant?

Mr. Oebke: We could not find out yet, because the tanks were not depleted completely during the operation time. But we
suppose, that concrete erosions may occurred by now.

Ceram Kote: By hindsight, would you use protective coatings for all areas of the fermentation tanks to have optimum value
preservation?

Mr. Oebke: Yes, definitely. During the construction of the plant we avoided huge application costs, but the advantages of
elaborate corrosion protection clearly prevail.

Ceram Kote: Do down times of the plant cause higher costs than incoming expenses for complete coating of the tanks?

Mr. Oebke: Yes, when no biogas can be produced, approx. 1.500 daily turnover is lost. That means 21.000 in two weeks.
In bigger facilities, for instance with a power of 600 700 kW it adds up to the double loss.

For almost 5 years, Mr. Oebke conducts a biogas plant in Buende, near our
company in Roedinghausen. The facility includes one fermenter plus one post-
digester and produces an electric power of 345 kW. During the construction in 2006,
Mr. Oebke was told to protect both tanks just in the upper area (biogas/biomass
transition zone, approx. 1 meter wide) with an epoxy coating, which meets
conventional standards. We had a conversation with Mr. Oebke. He is really satisfied
with his biogas plant but with his present knowledge he would invest more in
corrosion protection and resulting value preservation. In the following you can see a
part of our interview:
