THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THINK TALK WRITE (TTW) STRATEGY
TO IMPROVE STUDENTS WRITING SKILL IN DESCRIPTIVE TEXT

Language is one of the most important things in communication and it is used as a toll of
communication among the nations in all over the world. As an international language, English is very
important and has many inter relationships with various aspects of life owned by human being. In
Indonesia, English considered as the first foreign language and taught formally from elementary
school up to the university level.
In English, there are four skills that should be mastered by the students, they are: listening,
speaking, reading, and writing. The Writing skill became very important in the education field,
students need to be exercised and trained in order to have a good Writing skill. Writing is most
difficult than the other skills. In writing, the students have to master vocabulary, grammar, diction,
and punctuation. Beside that, the students must understand the kind of texts.
Writing is also something crucial and indispensable for the students because the success of
their study depends on the greater part of their ability to write. Like Heaton in St. Y. Slamet (2008:
141) statement that writes is a difficult and complex skill. If their listening skill, speaking skill and
reading skill is good, but their writing skill is poor they are very likely to fail in their study or at least
they will have difficulty in making progress. On the other hand, if they have a good ability in writing,
they will have a better chance to success in their study, because most of job required this skill.
In writing, to make a good sentence the writer should be able to understand the every part of
aspect that required in writing, like: advance grammar and vocabularies. Writing is also capability in
pouring idea and concept to write a language. Sometime, they may find problem to combine between
text and text to be a good sentence. Moreover, the students can predict what will be discussed on the
text. The first, they have think about sentence and idea where of be write, then they must discus the
idea to their friend and last, write down a better idea from the discussed.
Writing is an activity conducted by all students to express something about what they want to
write. In this case, writing is necessary because it influences their language ability or language skill. It
means that if they have mastered language skill, of course, they will be ready to write with high
quality and the result is so satisfied. The students sometime express their language in some activities.
They think that by expressing their own language they have express what they have mastered in their
mind and feeling.
In Junior High School, writing is one of difficult subject. They always find difficulties in
learning writing. Many problems that faced by students in learning writing. One of them they lack of
vocabulary. Beside that, the students felt difficult in developing idea. Moreover, the students assume
that writing can be mastered naturally. Another difficulties they do not have enough skill to follow the
writing subject. It happens because they are rarely practice writing both in the classroom and in the
house. Therefore, they always find some difficulties in learning writing.
The writing problem at Eight Grade of SMPN 1 Siman Ponorogo is less interested to write in
English. Teachers should search a way out to overcome the condition by applying some techniques
and strategies to enhance the students writing ability. Teachers should also create a good learning
atmosphere, so that the students can take part actively in the classroom activities. Teacher can apply
some enjoyable techniques such us Think Talk Write, in order to make the students interested in
learning writing. The steps of TTW are developed in writing and practicing language fluently before
writing, manipulate ideas before writing and also assist students in gathering and developing ideas
through structured discussion.
This thesis discusses about the implementation of Think Talk Write (TTW) strategy to
improve the students skill in descriptive text at the Eight Grade of SMPN 1 Siman Ponorogo in
academic year of 2012/2013.
