I grew up in Nashville, a child of
mandatory busing. Like others in the
cosmopolitan parts of the south, I have
self-evolved on race. Twenty four
years now removed from the exposure
to The Transition there, I find the
bold colors of distinction-past
decidedly fading. My now weathering
peer ahead, influenced by that
experience, is (gratefully) grey not
unlike the sky of my Pacific Northwest
home. And my former colors of
distinction, once framed by generational imprint, do at times explode
with a new brilliance and comprehension that no generation will ever
again frame for me. J P.
