Total marks: 50 Time allowed: 2 Hours No of pages: 2

Question 1: (11 Marks)

(a) True or false:
1- The bimetallic strip is used for On-off applications.
2- The resistance of the RTD decreases with temperature
3- The resistance of the thermistor decreases with temperature.
(b) What is the difference between incremental and absolute encoders?
(c) State the principle and application of each of the following sensors or transducers:
pyroelectric sensor - venturi tube rotameter.

Question 2: (12 Marks)

(a) A control system needs the average of temperature from three locations. Sensors make
the temperature information available as voltages, V1, V2, and V3. Develop an op-amp
circuit that outputs the average of these voltages.
(b) Signal-conditioning analysis shows that the following equation must relate output
voltage to input voltage:

= .

. .

Design circuits to do this using (a) a summing amplifier and (b) a differential amplifier.

Question 3: (14 Marks)

(a) True or false:
1- PLC can only be interfaced to logic inputs or outputs.
2- In PLC, relay type output can handle dc switching only.
3- PLC transistor type outputs can handle dc or ac switching.
4- Normally closed contacts invert the state of the signal they reference.
(b) What is the difference between single-box and modular type PLCs?
(c) Explain, briefly, why stop switch is wired as normally closed while in the ladder diagram it is
programmed as normally open.

(d) State the three types of timers available in the ladder PLC programming language? State
also the differences among them.
Question 4: (13 Marks)

(a) This problem is essentially part of the domestic washing machine program. Devise a ladder
program to switch on a pump for 100 s. It is then to be switched off and a heater switched
on for 50 s. Then the heater is switched off and another pump is used to empty the water
for 100 s. Assign suitable addresses for inputs and outputs.
(b) In this problem, it is required to write a program for the "coffee vending machine". The
machine has four inputs: Vend, Coffee, Cream, and Sugar, and three output valves for
Coffee, Cream, and Sugar as shown in the following figure:

The program should work as follows:
Press Coffee and Vend
o activate Coffee solenoid for 10 seconds.
Press Coffee, Cream, and Vend
o activate Coffee solenoid for 8 seconds
o activate Cream solenoid for 2 seconds
Press Coffee, Sugar, and Vend
o activate Coffee solenoid for 10 seconds
o activate Sugar solenoid for 2 seconds
Press Coffee, Cream, Sugar, and Vend
o activate Coffee solenoid for 7 seconds
o activate Cream solenoid for 2 seconds
o activate Sugar solenoid for 2 seconds
Design a PLC ladder diagram to implement this program. Assign addresses for each input
and output.
