Name : - Perumadura Meluka Nadeeshan De Silva Subject : - DAQ Student ID : - 1310528010 Introduction Structural health monitoring (SHM) system plays a major role in aerospace industry as it deals with safety and reliability of aircrafts reduce the cost of operation significantly while improving safety. The advancement of aircraft structures has altered the traditional methods of SHM systems and Nondestructive testing. There are several sensor systems already implemented on SHM systems such as FBG (Fiber Bragg Grating) sensors, MEMS sensors and piezoelectric sensors. The purpose of this feasibility study is to improve SHM system by implementing nano piezoelectric (nPZT nano lead zirconate titanate) sensors for carbon composite aircraft structures, which will subject to deformations such as delamination of layers etc. Current Data acquisition (DAQ) systems with piezoelectric sensors in SHM have several drawbacks such as high power requirement (for actuation) and less accuracy of data. A typical SHM DAQ system with piezoelectric sensing consist of actuators, sensors, Signal conditioning and processing units, Acquisition hardware and monitoring and storage device (Computer including DAQ software etc). Objectives The objectives intended to achieve in this feasibility study are as followed. Discussion of operation of DAQ systems with nPZT sensors Implementation on aircraft SHM systems Simulation of DAQ system Cost calculation for fabrication Cost calculation for real time operations Discussion of reliability and durability of the system Conclusion of feasibility Methodology The methodology of the feasibility study is as mentioned below. Research and gather information on current development of nPZT & DAQ systems Implement nPTZ sensors on Carbon Composite aircraft structure Simulate the DAQ system (Matlab or Labview) to visualize operation Analyze the cost of fabrication and operation Conclude the feasibility Conclusion The advancement of nanotechnology enables the DAQ systems to gather sensitive data with higher accuracy than its predecessors. The recent advancement of carbon composite structures for aircrafts requires more sensitive DAQ systems for SHM due to its complexity. Considering the new requirement of SHM for carbon composite structures, the feasibility study will be done to evaluate a new DAQ system which benefits the advancement of nanotechnology.
