About Shawn Wooden

A father, husband, attorney and Hartford City Council President, Shawn Wooden was born and raised in Hartford
where he and his wife Biree are raising their two boys today. The youngest of six, Shawn was raised by his father
Eddie, a small business owner, and his mother Fern who worked for the Community Renewal Team. They worked
hard, barely making ends meet, but always taught their children the importance of education and the value of serving
others. Through hard work and a scholarship, Shawn graduated from Trinity College where, today, he serves on the
Board of Trustees.

After graduating from college, Shawn worked for the Mayor of Hartford. In 1992, Shawn was the Connecticut State
Director for Project Vote, an organization dedicated to registering and mobilizing voters. Shawn also served as
Assistant to the Commissioner for Connecticuts Department of Social Services before earning his law degree from
New York University. Early in his legal career, he worked for the AFL-CIO in Washington, D.C., to help preserve
pension funds and protect working families.

Shawn is currently a Partner at the Hartford law firm Day Pitney where he advises public pension funds on
investments. And in addition to being a delegate and early supporter of Barack Obama in 2008, Shawn was selected
to serve on Governor Malloys transition team in 2010.

Elected to the City Council in 2011, Shawn was trusted by his colleagues to serve as City Council President and was
unanimously reelected to the position this year. On the Council, Shawn has helped the city increase economic
development opportunities to create jobs, secure funding for a new police substation, helped bring community and
faith leaders together with law enforcement to work together to increase public safety, held the line on taxes, and
created an innovative summer reading program for the citys youth.

Now Shawn is running for State Senate to give the district a fresh start, bring new energy and leadership, and ensure
that the entire districts voice is heard at the Capitol. Shawn will fight to help bring jobs and economic development
to our region, improve our schools, provide tax relief to middle-class families, increase public safety, and ensure that
all our communities get their fair share from the Capitol and all families have every opportunity to succeed.

About Hakeem J effries

On November 6, 2012, Hakeem overwhelmingly won a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives in the newly
redrawn Eighth Congressional District of New York. He succeeds a thirty-year incumbent in a district largely
anchored in Brooklyn and parts of Southwest Queens. Rep. Jeffries is a member of the House Budget and Judiciary
Committees. Prior to his election to the Congress and after challenging a twenty-year incumbent, Hakeem served in
the New York State Assembly. In that capacity, he authored laws that included protecting the civil liberties of law-
abiding New Yorkers during police encounters, encouraging the transformation of vacant luxury condominiums into
affordable homes for working families, and improving the quality of justice in the civil court system. In 2010,
Hakeem sponsored and championed groundbreaking civil rights legislation to end prison-based gerrymandering in
New York State, a practice that undermined the democratic principle of one person, one vote. With its passage, New
York became only the second state in the country to count incarcerated individuals in their home communities for
purposes of legislative redistricting, rather than in the counties where they are temporarily incarcerated.

Hakeem obtained his bachelors degree in political science from the State University of New York at Binghamton,
where he graduated with honors for outstanding academic achievement. He then received his masters degree in
public policy from Georgetown University. Thereafter, Hakeem attended New York University School of Law,
where he graduated magna cum laude and served on the Law Review. Following the completion of law school,
Hakeem clerked for the Honorable Harold Baer Jr. of the United States District Court for the Southern District of
New York.
