Hometown Heroes Prepare for State Police Careers

The halls and classrooms of the Michigan State Police (MSP) Training Academy are again filled with
men and women hoping to become MSP troopers, motor carrier officers and state properties
security officers with the start of the 127th Trooper Recruit School, 19th Motor Carrier Officer Recruit
School and 21st State Properties Security Officer Recruit School on June 8.
This is a time of great energy and growth for the Michigan State Police, stated Col. Kriste Kibbey
Etue, director of the MSP. Starting three recruit schools at the same time is a very exciting time for
the department and I wish these recruits the best in successfully exceeding the challenges before
them to become proud members of the Michigan State Police who serve with excellence, integrity
and courtesy, shoulder to shoulder with public safety professionals across the state.
In order to be selected to attend the academy, all applicants had to pass a stringent selection
process that included a physical fitness test, background investigation and hiring interview.
127th Trooper Recruit School
Ninety eight potential troopers will report to the MSP Training Academy for the next 21 weeks.
Between wake-up at 5 a.m. and lights-out at 10 p.m., the recruits will receive training in firearms,
water safety, defensive tactics, patrol techniques, report writing,
Recruits who successfully complete the training will graduate on Oct. 31, 2014. Eighty two troopers
graduated from the 126th Trooper Recruit School on May 30, 2014.
19th Motor Carrier Officer Recruit School
Thirteen potential motor carrier officers reported to the MSP Training Academy for training Sunday
as well. For the next 19 weeks, the recruits will undergo instruction similar to their fellow trooper
recruits, as well as receive specialized instruction in commercial vehicle law and commercial vehicle
inspection procedures.
Motor carrier officers are armed uniformed members of the MSP Commercial Vehicle Enforcement
Division, specializing in commercial vehicle enforcement. They enforce traffic safety laws on
commercial vehicles, protect the infrastructure through aggressive size and weight enforcement,
conduct commercial vehicle and driver inspections and contribute to homeland security efforts by
enforcing hazardous material regulations.
Recruits who successfully complete the training will graduate on Oct. 17, 2014. Thirteen motor
carrier officers graduated from the 18th Motor Carrier Recruit School on March 13, 2014.
21st State Properties Security Officer Recruit School
Five potential state properties security officers also reported to the MSP Training Academy for recruit
school on Sunday. For the next 10 weeks, they too will undergo instruction similar to their fellow
trooper and motor carrier recruits, as well as specific training in explosive recognition, executive
protection and terrorism awareness.
The Michigan State Capitol Security Section was established in 1970 to provide security and police
services at the State Capitol and surrounding state offices. Today, state properties security officers
are responsible for the safety of nearly 24,000 state employees and visitors to state buildings in the
city of Lansing. State properties security officers patrol the Capitol area on foot, bicycle and by
vehicle.
Recruits who successfully complete the training will graduate on Aug. 15, 2014. Three state
properties security officers graduated from the 20th State Properties Security Officer Recruit School
on March 28, 2014.
