Box Culverts
Rocla

Box Culverts
Rocla manufactures a wide range of
reinforced concrete box culverts for
small and large spans. Box culverts
are an ideal alternative to pipes for
limited fill height applications,
precast open channels, underpasses
and ducts for underground services.
Dimensions of components vary
depending on specification and
manufacturing location.
Contact Rocla for actual product
dimensions.
Special Designs
Rocla

box culverts are generally

designed to AS1597.1, AS1597.2 or
State road authority specifications.
Rocla can design and manufacture
box culverts to suit special
conditions, such as aggressive soil
conditions and non-standard design
or construction loadings. Box
culverts can also be supplied with
splayed ends, starter bars, block-
outs for skylights, etc.
Hydraulic Design
The CPAA publication Hydraulics
of Precast Conduits (available
from the Rocla website) assists
designers with the hydraulic design
of concrete pipes and box culverts.
Headwalls
Precast headwalls can be supplied
to suit most single and multi-cell
box culvert installations.

Handling
Rocla

box culverts are supplied with cast-in lifting attachments of appropriate size. There are
generally four anchors in the crown of the box culvert for handling and installation. Box culverts are
generally lifted and transported in the legs down position (legs-up for inverts). Some culverts
may be transported on-edge and must be turned to the installed position on site. For some large
culverts, bracing may be provided to stabilise the legs during transport and installation. These
braces should remain in position until the box culvert is installed.
Installation
Installation should be in accordance with project-specific drawings and specifications. Where precast
base slabs are used, 75mm of sand or fine granular material should be laid on a stable soil foundation
to provide uniform bedding. Once the base slab has been laid, cement mortar should be applied in
the rebate to ensure continuous and even bedding and to avoid any point loading. Fill material should
be compacted in layers of no more than 150mm, evenly on both sides of the culvert structure. Link
slabs should also be bedded on cement mortar and, if specified, fixed with dowel bars.

Box Culverts
Base Slabs
Precast RCBC base slabs are a cost-
effective alternative to in situ base
slabs and are available for most
Rocla

Check with project drawings and
specifications to ensure they can be
used. Base slabs should be installed
in accordance with project drawings
and specification and/or AS1597.2.
Link Slabs
RCBC link slabs can be provided to
reduce the cost of installation of
multi-cell box culverts. They are to
be installed in accordance with
project drawings and specification
and/or AS1597.2 section 6. Link
slabs are based on B1 exposure
classification, 0-2m fill and traffic
loadings W7, T44, HLP320 and
SM1600. Dowel holes in link slabs
and box culvert crowns can be
provided on request.
Contact Rocla for more information.
Lids
Precast lids are available for small
